What the world eats

I would like to think we eat like Italy or Mexico, in reality tis more like USA or UK

OP posts:
spanky2 · 28/04/2013 13:20

Italy.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 28/04/2013 13:21

They come from this 2007 book, hungry planet

MortifiedAdams · 28/04/2013 13:23

Canada for us!

ItsOkayItsJustMyBreath · 28/04/2013 13:25

Trying to work out which country survives on pasta pesto and chocolate buttons toast Blush

Yonihadtoask · 28/04/2013 13:30

A cross between Kuwait and Australia.

I am, however, following the Paleo diet at the moment - so all I am buying is meat, fish, eggs and green veggies. With a bit of bread and pasta for DH and DS.

The UK groceries surprised me - a lot of sweets and processed foods.

We live in the US, but our food shop is much more like Canada, with less processed/ready meals. We would probably have more fruit and some Korean/Asian food thrown in - I am actuallly doing quite a bit of Korean cooking.

MUCH less fast food than the US picture - we actually deliberately avoid it as much as possible, although sometimes we resort to fast food when things are crazy, but you can certainly find healthier (not healthy) options than Burger King.

Thumbwitch · 28/04/2013 14:58

I also think we're probably closest to Canada overall, although have quite a British amount of chocolate. We're in Australia but we don't eat anything like the amount of meat they have showing there - we eat far more fish (but it's expensive here unless you catch your own).

StatisticallyChallenged · 28/04/2013 15:32

Struggling to find much in the way of actual meals on the British one!

I'd guess we would be closest to Canada, maybe with a bit more meat. And no drinks - we literally don't buy anything except milk.

Maat · 28/04/2013 15:36

Replace the pop with wine and we are closest to Italy.

Great set of pictures.

amazingmumof6 · 28/04/2013 15:40

none of these, I saw no cake. where's the cake? chocolate, if you must know! Grin

Chad is shocking though. Sad

Anifrangapani · 28/04/2013 15:48

The British one has a shocking amount of packaging.

None of them look anything like ours - the type of things we eat were there but as ready meals or absent.

SuburbanCrofter · 28/04/2013 15:50

I think the family in Chad are living in a refugee camp. Chad hosts a large number of refugees from the Darfur conflict in neighbouring Sudan. They are sitting in front of a tent, where presumably they live - and you can see more tents behind them. The food in front of them is probably their food ration from a distribution - it all looks non-perishable, no fruit and veg.

BillOddiesBeard · 28/04/2013 15:51

Canada for us as well

SprinkleLiberally · 28/04/2013 15:59

Canada with a touch of France. I don't recognise the UK shop from my friends and family either.

amazingmumof6 · 28/04/2013 16:21

they should have done Hungary - alcohol, coffee and fags with some sour cream and paprika for effect

happybubblebrain · 28/04/2013 16:29

A cross between India and England - vegetarian, but with lots of chocolate and crisps.

YoniRaver · 28/04/2013 16:41

Probably a mixture of quite a few. I am sort of surprised by the amount of carbonated drinks but have noticed whenever you see films/things of families round the table there always seems to be a couple of bottles of soft drinks on the table which is something we dont have here.

I'm also surprised by the lack of fruit and veg in a lot of countries..if you go with the five a day portions and the size of the families it is severly lacking. Do they not get the same message as us,is the thinking different ?

Madamecastafiore · 28/04/2013 16:44

Italy here totally.

LittleFeileFooFoo · 28/04/2013 16:47

Mongolia with more spinach and less meat...

LittleFeileFooFoo · 28/04/2013 16:48

And having been to Mongolia, I can say that the food was great!

LittleFeileFooFoo · 28/04/2013 16:51

fruit and Veggies are expensive to grow. While they do grow easily, they often require lots of hands on management if pesticides aren't used, and many get damaged in transit so handling is important.
They also require a lot of land, and water. If you move a lot they are harder to grow (obvs) and if you don't have irrigation they can be tricky. Short growing seasons also effect the crops.

Nat38 · 28/04/2013 16:57

Canada

FairPhyllis · 28/04/2013 17:02

The British one is weird - I can't see any bread or anything that would actually constitute a main meal.

BarkisIsWilling · 28/04/2013 17:06

Interesting, and far from realistic depiction of Africa as a whole (although both countries in there are W. African).

Also, 20 pics = "The World"?
