i give my kids fish fillet fingers, such as birds eye, as they are made from proper fish as opposed tot he cheaper ones which are chopped and sahped fish, similar to chicken nuggets!

i beleive that they are nutritious and far better for them than a lot of the rubbish that is aimed at kids. anyone for a turkey twizzler?

IOTAnnenbaum · 07/12/2005 18:17

I think it's better to buy the 100% cod fillet ones (Capn Birdesye) -- I don't buy the ones with minced fish and filler in them

IOTAnnenbaum · 07/12/2005 18:17

snap

harpsiheraldangelssing · 07/12/2005 18:18

good quality ones are fine, I think

collision · 07/12/2005 18:18

Our ds's love them and it is the only prepacked food that DH (a chef) will let them eat.

Buy 100% fish fillet.

Yummy.

Passionflowerinapeartree · 07/12/2005 18:19

Absolutely fine IMO as long as good quality ones. Birds eye, M & S or if you still feel a bit funny about them what about the M & S fish goujons. DD's love them.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 07/12/2005 18:19

You need a whole pack of about 20 odd to feed a family of four (IMO) so work out quite expensive - plus DS1 and DH hate them.

inameeting · 07/12/2005 18:19

We've always have fish fingers (fillet ones) in the house - even before we had a child. I thnk they're great - was having a convo about them at my (rather middle class) post natal group just yesterday and everyone agreed they're fab. You can't beat a fish finger sarnie if you're in a rush. Had some with beans for luncy today actually, I do them on the George Forman.

Roobietherednosedreindeer · 07/12/2005 18:20

DD loves them - the only trouble is that I end up scoffing the leftovers!

GingerBearingGifts · 07/12/2005 18:21

Bird's eye Haddock ones for me. Got to be with 2 slices of hovis best of both white bread with lashings of Heinz tomato ketchup.

aka Scruff's supper in our house.

Don't tell Suzywong, she pines for them out there in the colonies.

Passionflowerinapeartree · 07/12/2005 18:30

Dh keeps eating all ours for breakfast .

Mercy · 07/12/2005 18:52

I think Bird's Eye and M&S are both fine and quite nutritious. Mine have them with salad and chips.

You can make them from scratch though - more goujon style.

NannyL · 07/12/2005 18:56

I LOVE fish fingers.... where as i would NEVER even dream of buying a chicken nugget / turkey dinosuar or any other thing 'like that' i think 100% fillet fish fingers (eg birs eye) are 'ok' and do sometimes feed them to the children!

For some reason i feel they arnt as bad, but would never have minced fish!

Also mine normally have the adult ones... what are they called?.... (those big "chunks" of fish breaded (aimed mroe at adults i think)) or even just plain fish, either baked (ege smoked haddock (yum)) or in a sauce or fish pie etc!

But we always have some in the freezer!

hermykne · 07/12/2005 19:38

thats great, thanks all

I know this thread is over but I saw bird's eye fish fingers being manufactured on 'big cook, little cook' () and they really are just fish and breadcrumbs.

the fish fillets were stuffed tight into cardboard boxes and frozen at the fishery. they transported the fish boxes to bird eye, where BE just simply cut the big frozen squares of fish into little fingers and sprinkled them with breadcrumb and paprika mix. that's it!

Avalon · 08/12/2005 12:45

So if Bird's Eye fish fingers are ok, what about their chicken dippers? 100% chicken, aren't they?

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 08/12/2005 12:48

yes, they are quite good as well. ds like these. the only thing in chick dippers that isn't all that great is salt but I don't think the content is all that bad.

Epiffany · 08/12/2005 12:50

I'm a food policewoman and anti crap fast food stuff esp for kids, but I have the fillet FF in the freezer, dd loves them although she get them about once a fortnigt with saute potatoes and cucumber and tomato and cheese.
Occasionally I make my own, but its not the same
I've never lumped them in the same category as nuggets or twizzlers etc
Although the own brand cheapest ones look dire and grey.

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 08/12/2005 12:50

ooh Avalon - meant to mention....

do you laugh at all those silly billboards all around town promoting shopping Rugby (don't bother) featuring those two tarts and that blonde haired greasy dude wearing the dodgy pink shirt? i chuckle every time i drive past them.

skerriesmum · 08/12/2005 12:50

Yes, but the "fish" is actually all the fish bits left over from making proper fillets, frozen into one large mass and then cut up. Even the "100% fish" ones are really only 70% fish.
(We still eat them though!)

DaddyCoolNippingAtYourNose · 08/12/2005 12:52

i don't know skerries... on big cook little cook, the fillets looked pretty substantial and above board. maybe it was just for tv but they were filming right in the factory.

Sleighmenere · 08/12/2005 12:55

As I see it the main reason that fish fingers are better than chicken nuggets is that the fish is not (yet) intensively farmed like the chicken is likely to be. The fish are likely to have had a normal fish life before being caught, filleted, skinned and frozen by a huge big trawler. The only thing you need be wary of with fish fingers is additives and salt content. Chicken products are a different story though as intensively reared chicken not only has a rotten life but is pumped full of antibiotics and growth hormones, rendering the chicken meat too dodgy for me to feed my dd. IMHO the basic ingredient in fish fingers is much safer than the basic ingredient in chicken nuggety things.

skerriesmum · 08/12/2005 12:56

I'm crap at doing links but this is where I got the info:

www.shoppingbill.net/special_report_fishfingers.html

skerriesmum · 08/12/2005 12:57

or rather: specialreport etc...

skerriesmum · 08/12/2005 12:57

sorry! it's not coming out the way I thought
