I haven't read the thread, only Soupy's most recent post but hey, it's impressive when a fish finger thread gets 151 posts, fab! I think they're fine, if they're 100% fish and breadcrumbs, I quite like fishfingers and peas for my own supper when I really, really, can't be arsed.

Mercy · 10/12/2005 21:04

As i said earlier ( yesterday actually), not everyone is a good cook and/or enjoys it. Let alone will your kids/dh/p eat what you've made.

Not all home made food can be made more quickly than convenience food. Tomato and basil sauce? - takes for ever. I agree it's cheaper though.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 10/12/2005 21:11

Nanny L - hmm lets see what "extras" I should cut out of my £40 (yes it's gone up from £25-35) weelkly shopping budget for a BIG eating family of 4.

Nappies?
Fruit?
Milk?
Cereals?

I'm very happy for your friend - I assume she's not currently finding herself with £35,000 of debt, and threat of repossession?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 10/12/2005 21:19

You don't need fruit, get Sunny D instead - isn't it the same thing?

FrostyTheGloworm · 10/12/2005 21:23

just to back up nanny...

we are self employed and earn LESS than we would do if we were on the dole and getting all the related benefits...yet most of our food is organic/non-junk/healthy. we do eat pizza/easy food stuff once or twice a week.

it all depends on your priorities...we dont spend much on fashion/clothes/movies/going out and a million and one other things. child benefit covers nappies/toddlers shoes/milk and most of their needs.

Healthy eating costs much less than junk food,
eg porridge much cheaper and way more healthy than cornflakes (which are expensive/full of sugar/full of salt)

dont normally rant on munsnet but lack of money doesnt mean you cant buy good quality food...we are living proof!

bty when we do eat fishfingers, birdseye 100% hoki ones...kids wont eats the other brands (you know those yuck grey ones)

Mercy · 10/12/2005 21:41

£1.50 or thereabouts for 10 fishfingers (Birds Eye) .This will make 3 meals for my children, ie, 25p each person per meal.

I'm sorry you're having a hard time qoq, I totally sympathise - but fishfinger are not crap/junkfood!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/12/2005 13:32

"it all depends on your priorities...we dont spend much on fashion/clothes/movies/going out and a million and one other things. child benefit covers nappies/toddlers shoes/milk and most of their needs. "

Fashion/Clothes?? Can't remember the last time we bought clothes for ourselves (or the children for that matter) - apart from the slippers DH bought yesterday -but even that was payed for from the M&S vouchers I won. Movies?? Got a nice collection of DVD's I've won and people have given us over the years - last trip to the Cinema was in August 2003 when we went to see Terminator 3. Going out?? Again can't remeber the last time.

£1.50 for 10 fishfingers - DS2 would need about 3/4 for a 'meal', DS1 4/5, I need about 6/7 to make me feel like I've eaten and DH needs about 8/9 - so I'd have to buy 3 packs - making it cost £4.50!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/12/2005 13:45

oh and added to that, as I've said before, DS1 and DH don't even like them!

Epiffany · 11/12/2005 13:58

What makes me really upset about this thread is that I know exactly where Moondog is coming froma nd agree a lot with what she says about how she views childrens food.
I am the same 99% of the time
But MD you have come across as a food/culture snob and judgemental which is really upsetting.
Any of these fast foods, are ok in moderation, or as a "treat" or once in while occasion for whatever reason.
And the major problem I have with farmed chickens- the supermarket - even the free range ones is the diet they consume, the antibiotics the growth hormones and the fertilisers and chemicals used to keep the bedding areas sanitary, this also comes back to the ethical treatment of kept birds.
They are also high in fat nowadays.
We stopped eating meat as often to instead buyer less of a better quality.
I am a food purist, I bore people shitless with food lectures. But I am also reasonable enough to know that Mcdonalds a few times a year (we personally don't but... ) cheap wine, celebrity jungle and fish fingers do not make for a truly miserable life
Put it into context for heavens sake!

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/12/2005 14:01

"But I am also reasonable enough to know that Mcdonalds a few times a year (we personally don't but... ) cheap wine, celebrity jungle and fish fingers do not make for a truly miserable life "

Well I have (rarely these days) taken my cildren to Mcdonalds, drink LOTS of cheap wine - and hate Celebrity Jungle, fishfingers I don't personally mind - but my family hate them.

JabberTheRedNoseReindeer · 11/12/2005 14:08

Oh, wow, another crap food thread. Well, I have considered quitting my job as breadwinner (no pun intended) for my family so that I can grow all of my own food and make all of our own clothes. That is, until we ran out of money and had to move into a homeless shelter. Until then, on the days that I work I am not concerned at all about giving ds fish sticks that are simply breaded fish fillets cut into smaller pieces or chicken nuggets that are all breast meat breaded and cut smaller.

And, btw, I will often serve him vegetables to go along with it from a can...

So go ahead, shoot me

moondog · 11/12/2005 14:11

Hey Jabber,if you feel that that is the best your kids deserve then go ahead!!!

Sleighmenere · 11/12/2005 14:11

Every single mother on this thread does the absolute best that she can do for her kids. It's not a competition.

sevensuzyswongsaswimming · 11/12/2005 14:14

gingerbear was right, I can't get decent fishfingers here in the colonies

I love them, well the haddock ones, the ones here are rather flacid affairs with non specific fish mince in them so we steer clear.

JabberTheRedNoseReindeer · 11/12/2005 14:15

MD, if I were in the habit of cursing and really going after someone on MN then believe me, I would let loose on a rant here. I will just say, however, that your attitude of superiority on this subject is tiring, to say the least.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/12/2005 14:16

"if you feel that that is the best your kids deserve then go ahead!!!"

  • I can't believe I just read that!
JabberTheRedNoseReindeer · 11/12/2005 14:16

Thanks, HRH, I was myself to say the least.

Mistletoo · 11/12/2005 14:17

164 messages on fish fingers - that's going some - it must be some kind of record.

fish finger butties - can't whack em - especially with petit pois and baby carrots mullered and spread over them

merrycompo · 11/12/2005 14:17

I was ed too - had to read it twice just to see it really was as nasty as it sounded

moondog · 11/12/2005 14:18

I mean it-if you think it's good enough for 'em then hey,who am I to fret??

Anyway,I'll leave you to scrap-off to the Sunday school knees up,gourmet canapes in tow.

See ya!

JabberTheRedNoseReindeer · 11/12/2005 14:21

Am I the only one who sees a bit of hypocrisy in making a nasty comment like that and heading off to Sunday school after?

Mercy · 11/12/2005 14:21

QoQ - wow your family has huge appetites compared to mine, in which case, point taken.

hermykne · 11/12/2005 14:28

omg, i ask a simple question! havent had the time to look in for a few days, my god, what a debate.

my dh knows someone who fished for cod of donegal in ireland and he tells him of some scary stuff regardng the belaching of the fish to make it white.

but hey its once in awhile , my dd aint livng on them and there is absolutely no way she'd eat sardines for me.

i make my own nuggets so thats makes of for the bad food parenting bit,

OP posts:
doormat · 11/12/2005 14:58

nothing like fish finger butties they are nice especially smothered in salt and vinegar
kids love them too with chips and peas or beans

I prefer the 100% fillet ones
not the minced muck

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 11/12/2005 15:23

mercy - yes they are rather large eaters - feel like I'm cooking for 8 rather than 4 most days LOL.

If we buy a medium chicken (sorry non-organic) (one priced about £2.50) we (well they - I have a tiny appetite compared to them) finish it in one meal! If I want it to stretch to 2 meals then I have to pay for an extra large chicken at £4 or more!
