Has this kicked off yet?

And if not, why not?

GingerBearingGifts · 08/12/2005 23:32

I use thighs and stew 'em custy (£2.75 for 6 at my butcher's). Years ago he had a sign that said 'Chicken Thighs, big and juicy, just like Fergie's. Presume he meant the Duchess and not Sir Alex.

Tortington · 08/12/2005 23:54

I have cod fillet 100%, yet these are the ingredients

Batter, water, wheat flour, wheat starch, potato starch, salt, mustard powder, pepper extract, breadcrumb 15%, yeast, spice, colours (paprika extract, Curcumin,) emulsifier (Mono & diacetyltartic acid esters of mono and Diglycerides of fatty acids), flour treatment agent (ascorbic acid) vegetable oil.

Do you know what, I didn't realise that all of this crap was in them until I typed it out.

I have been meaning to try out a recipe of fresh fish fingers but haven't had the time so will post the recipe on here prob tomorrow now as I need to got to bed (was up at 4am)

colditz · 09/12/2005 00:03

Custy, skin them first, the skin goes slimy and gross.

GingerBearingGifts · 09/12/2005 00:09

see if you like this-
chop an onion and fry, add crushed garlic, chop thighs into small pieces and fry until browned. then add carrots/parsnips/turnip (one of those 'stew packs' from supermarket). Then mix 2 packs of coleman's chicken chasseur mix with water, add to pan and cook for 20 - 30 mins.

My version of 'stew'

Harktheheraldcabewillsing · 09/12/2005 00:09

My house is still ponging pooey pooey pongy stinky stinky fish... Yeuuuuk!

I've tried everything bar getting the curtains down and washing them and getting a carpet blokey in to wash those!

Stinky fish!

Best way to eat fish is oil supplements. Sorry to all of you fish lovers, but I don't like fish.

Harktheheraldcabewillsing · 09/12/2005 00:13

Pongy Broccoli??? - don't tell me... I've got some in the fridge right now! I'll bin it if it's going to pong!

UCM · 09/12/2005 00:15

I would never buy the cheapo own brand fish fingers, I once knew someone who worked in th factory. I will tell all as long as no one has had cheap fish fingers tonight.

100% fillet ones are fine. The coating is what contains the other ingriedients and takes a certain percentage on the total content.
ie. 100% fillet of haddock may still appear as 70%, doesn't mean anything else in the fishy bit.

IOTAnnenbaum · 09/12/2005 11:49

no way would a chicken feed 7-8 people in my house -- I cooked a nice free range one (cost about £4.50) in cider and apples last night - -the kids ate one breast dh ate half a chicken and I had the remaining leg.

the cat did get a few scraps off the bone though.

moondog · 09/12/2005 14:06

But why do you all talk about packets and jars of ready made saucesas if this is the default option??
It takes no time to do a real meal.
As I type,I have a pan of beetroot boiling for me to make a beetroot mint and fettasalad tonight to go with my lamb and green salad.
Also got a pot of chilli con carne and a beef curry on the go to freeze.

Beef (or chicken) curry.

Fry garlic, onions ginger and fresh chillies.Add your meat (chicken drumsticks always look better if you thwack off the ends with a cleaver)and brown it.
Then add curry powder or better still, paste (Pataks is good) Stir it up,add a can or two of tomatoes, can of coconut milk and seasoning (also tablespoon of sugar) and simmer. 20 mins later add vegetable if you like (I like green beans) and simmer further.

Leave for a day or two to let flavours develop.

Mercy · 09/12/2005 15:24

Not everyone likes cooking though and some just aren't very good at it. I have found some ready made sauces superior to my own efforts. Plus the huge variety of ready made stuff is very tempting if your repetoire is rather limited (hence the no. of threads entitled 'What's for dinner tonight') I never used to mind cooking but now I generally find it a chore.

Custard: you don't need to cook chicken before you curry it.

Epiffany · 09/12/2005 17:22

Moondog are we not allowed a night off real cooking every once in a while? Without being called lazy?
I'd never serve them up daily or even weekly.
I cook splendid food virtually everyday, using organic and locally bought produce - some days we are late in or dd is very tired so we whip out a fish finger.

Epiffany · 09/12/2005 17:23

and to argue that a supermarket bought chicken is healthier than fish fingers is a bit rich too ;)

moondog · 09/12/2005 17:24

Eh??
Of course it bloody is!!!

IOTAnnenbaum · 09/12/2005 17:24

Moondog - -I'm shocked that you use curry paste surely you should be grinding up your own spices?!

katierocket · 09/12/2005 17:25

not if it's a revolting battery chicken that's sat in it's own shite for it's short sad life.

HRHQueenOfQuelNoel · 09/12/2005 17:25

IMO "real" food freshly prepared can be QUICKER than convience stuff AND

I'm still not buying fish fingers are they're cr*p

moondog · 09/12/2005 17:29

I wouldn't buy something that had sat in it's (sic) own shite.
Iota......gotta cut corners somewhere......

mumfor1sttime · 09/12/2005 17:30

I buy the fish fillet ones for ds and he loves them. He is 11 months. I give him 2 with some veggies and potatoes.
