I'm sorry if this thread has been done lots? But anyway, whilst there are films that are bad and funny for it, there are films that are so bad they make you want to scream. I watched Aquaman the other day and it was jaw grindingly awful. I can't think of a worse recent movie right now but am interested to hear of any that can challenge that monumental pile of guano.

Kenneth Branagh's god awful Agatha Christie movies. He's not as good a director as he thinks he is.

Yes absolutely- or actor.
Belfast was awfully self indulgent as well - everyone thought I should love it, what with me being from Norn Ireland myself and having grown up during the troubles, but it didn't half go on.

It first came out when I was in my 20s it was legendary nothing else like it these days I would be ok with it but underwhelmed

Maybe I’ve just seen all the films influenced by it which made it seem derivative in a backwards sort of way!

It made me want to watch Sunshine again.

electricmoccasins · 08/01/2023 16:58

I didn’t mind Love Actually when it first came out.

Watched it again last year and was appalled! The Andrew Lincoln/ Kiera Knightly storyline - which I once thought cute - is in fact horrendous - on so many levels!

I agree Rowan Atkinson’s cameo is the best five minutes.

More recently, Where the Crawdads sing.
Again, explicit, brutal male violence when Chase raped Kya. He beat the shit out of her and she wasn't hospitalised and remained pretty for the camera.
She murdered him but that scene wasn't included.

1000yellowdaisies · 08/01/2023 17:01

The Power of the Dog on Netflix. So so bad. Pretentious drivel The fact it won oscars proves the oscars are now a total farce.

The whole point of the book is that you don't know if she murdered him until the very end.

I loved that film, but felt the way you do about Licorice Pizza at last years Oscars!

I remember when Event Horizon came out. It got bad reviews at the time, but it sort of acquired a reputation after it came out on video/DVD. I think it was the juxtaposition of sci-fi and religious imagery, plus some extremely imaginative gore and some slightly gonzo performances. It’s not a perfect film by any stretch but there’s a bold vision at work there for sure.

The mid 90s were not great for sci-fi films. Alien was 20 years old and most of the new sci-fi was either direct-to-video Dolph Lundgren dreck or toothless crowd-pleasy actioners like Independence Day. So when someone came along with a bit of vision it felt fresh.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas. (The Book was shit too)

My Sisters Keeper (why did they change the ending)

The Shopaholic film (can't remember if it had the same name as the book. But itv was almost a totally different story)

Actually lots of book 'adaptations' that were nothing like the books.

The Confessions of a Shopaholic film brought in elements from later films to pad it out, I think, and set in NY rather than London. But also they didn’t make the main character very likeable whereas I thought she was misguided but quite sweet in the books.

MARS ATTACKS!
I forgot all about this one we all sat watching in horror paused it went outside for a cigarette silently for about ten minutes before someone cracked and said what the actual FUCK IS THAT we watched it to the end decided the producers were on crack

Love Mars Attacks. Possibly the way they manage to end things is extra funny for me as my Nan used to torture me by playing Slim Whitman albums loudly when I was a child…..

I did however say WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK WAS THAT after watching banshees of inisherin last week. Fantastic cinematography and acting, but just WTF?

whirlyhead · 08/01/2023 17:13

All of the Star Wars films except the original 3. They are just a load of tosh, and even good actors seem to forget how to act when they’re in them. I avoid any new ones now.

both top gun films. Terrible music. Terrible and ridiculous storylines. No decent female roles. And irritating Tom cruise being irritating.

All the lord of the rings films. Endless hours of tedium. They look good but that’s it.

the original bond films with Sean Connery. Odious man.

I cannot bear Love Actually. It's as if the stories were written by kids they are so bad, particularly the Martin Freeman, Laura Linney and Keira Knightley ones. They are not remotely interesting or funny, just plain irritating. The only bit I like is Rowan Atkinson's 5 minutes

I could not agree with this more!

Takoneko · 08/01/2023 17:14

Silence

I found it infuriating to watch because there was a real sense that underneath there was a really interesting story to be told and a very talented cast but it was just so bad. Painfully slow and lost up its own arse.

I’m another one that loved the Power of the Dog but found Liquorice Pizza uncomfortable in the extreme to watch.

Anything Marvel. Churned out formulaic shite, like the Stock Aitken and Waterman of film.

Except Black Panther, that was excellent.

Blade 3 - still mad years later

Agree on EV, cracking soundtrack at the end too.

Oooh but the first one is so bad it's good especially the opening club scene Grin

OlleOskiFelle · 08/01/2023 16:44

Black Swan for being pretentious tosh.

Oh yes 👍. It’s basically ‘Showgirls’ but without the camp humour.

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 08/01/2023 17:20

X-Men 3 and Spider-Man 3 both destroyed the great stuff in the first two fims of the franchise.

The Northman was so bad I wished I was drunk or stoned so could just laugh at it. Awful, awful film.

DublinDoris2000 · 08/01/2023 17:23

Captain Corellis Mandolin.
Loved the book. Nicolas Cage was all sorts of wrong.

Pipsickl · 08/01/2023 17:23

That glass onion one. We watched it at Christmas and I couldn’t bear it. So many stupid plot holes and contrivances. Also the ending was beyond stupid

BigMandsTattooPortfolio · 08/01/2023 17:26

Speaking of Nicholas Cage, ‘The Wicker Man’ remake.

rattybottoms · 08/01/2023 17:26

Echobelly · 08/01/2023 17:27

One film that was so boring and annoying when I was a kid was 'Three Men and Little Lady' - the Three Men and a Baby film it came after was quite cute, but the sequel was boring and fell back on the plot device of England and the English being old fashioned and snobbish compared to fun-loving Americans - yawn!

Cherry60 · 08/01/2023 17:29

3 Billboards - I heard SO much praise and awards for it but it's so fake and badly written it really pissed me off.
