I am just watching Mary Poppins for the umpteenth time. Have always thought that Sister Suffragette is the cleverest and funniest and most brilliant song ever.
What are your favourites?

Doe a Deer from The Sound of Music.

Nothing can touch this IMO. So many fashion shoots have referenced it - it's completely iconic (and so very Christmassy!).

Eminybob · 26/12/2022 19:45

Secret love from Calamity Jane.

In fact all the songs from Calamity Jane. It's my fave.

And the classic gateway to musicals for young children.

I also love I Have Confidence in Me, Sixteen Going on Seventeen and the Lonely Goatherd. But I can do without TSOM itself, Climb Ev’ry Mountain and the dirge-fest Edelweiss.

TerraNostra · 26/12/2022 19:53

Oh, also love So Long Farewell!

mistyriver · 26/12/2022 19:54

Another Suitcase in Another Hall - Evita
Take that look off your face - Tell me on a Sunday

Both from listening to my parents Andrew Lloyd Webber CD as a kid, over and over ... 😆

Secret Love from Calamity Jane
Tonight - West Side Story. Plus all the rest. Brilliant musical.

I always love the words to Hello Young Lovers from King and I. It's such a beautiful song and celebration of love across generations.

I love this one. As a kid I always ffd it, but when I watched it as an adult the lyrics hit me hard.
I also love seven brides for seven brothers, the barn raising is the best dance scene ever. I love Bless Your Beautiful hide, goin courting, sobbing women...but sound of music is my favourite and I'd have to go for climb every mountain. The lyrics make me think of devoting yourself to your dream even if your dream is something quite ordinary.

Also really love Out Here On My Own, sung by Irene Cars in the original Fame film. Amazing!

GlitchStitch · 26/12/2022 20:59

Cara, not Cars! Stupid autocorrect.

I used to love Seven Brides for Seven Brothers until I realised that The Sobbin’ Women” was about abduction and forced marriage by rape - and the plot of the movie shows the brothers thinking this is a fine idea, so they abduct young women too.

Sorry.

@nilsmousehammer agree Revolting Children from Matilda is excellent.

I love so many songs from musicals it’s hard to choose. My fave at the moment is Hopelessly Devoted To You from Grease.

Carol Burnett "Little Girls" in Annie.

"Shiny" from Moana. Great lyrics.

Both songs make me smile.

33goingon64 · 26/12/2022 22:42

West Side Story! All the songs really but if I had to choose I'd say Tonight when all the characters sing their own lines over the top of each other.
