I am just watching Mary Poppins for the umpteenth time. Have always thought that Sister Suffragette is the cleverest and funniest and most brilliant song ever.
What are your favourites?

OP posts:

I love Stars from Les Miserables. It's the moment where you understand the motivations of a difficult character (Javert). Russell Crowe absolutely murdered it in the film sadly

ASCB31 · 26/12/2022 14:43

Love the songs in Mary Poppins 2 as well, but I do absolutely love Emily Blunt, so anything with her in I'd love!

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 26/12/2022 15:09

Maybe This Time from Cabaret, (also LOVE Stevie from Schitts Creek's version).
Love Stars too but agree with PP about Russell Crowe - absolutely dire!

FlamingoSocks · 26/12/2022 15:11

We Know The Way from Moana. It’s just musical perfection, moving, and evocative of adventure and wind in your hair!!

itsgettingweird · 26/12/2022 15:13

Agree Stars is a very moving song and explains so much is a very deep storyline.

Also I love I'd give my life for you from Miss Saigon.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 26/12/2022 15:15

"Consider yourself" from Oliver! with 'Father Christmas' from Scrooge a very close second...

Yes re Maybe This Time, and Stevie's version definitely one of the best.

Seasons of Love from Rent

brushedoff · 26/12/2022 15:17

What a tough question- love musical theatre!

I'm going with:
He's My Boy (ETAJ)
Sun and Moon (Miss Saigon)
Don't Lose Ur Head (Six)

NewToWoo · 26/12/2022 15:19

Cabaret form Cabaret (also adore Maybe this Time). I also love On the Street Where You Live from My Fair Lady

Hbh17 · 26/12/2022 15:24

"The Room Where It Happens" - Hamilton
Agree about "Maybe This Time" - Cabaret
"Sit Down You're Rocking The Boat" - Guys & Dolls
"When I Grow Up" - Matilda

Danikm151 · 26/12/2022 15:28

Defying Gravity- if you listen to the music it is brilliant

one day more- Les mis

TerraNostra · 26/12/2022 15:29

Doe a deer from the Sound of Music

You’re Welcome from Moana

Pressure from Encanto (not a classic, admittedly, but great recent song)

I do love the whole of MP though OP and agree that Sister Suffragette is underrated. Also agree with the PP who said the Mary Poppins Returns songs are good.

However Supercalifragilistic is the undisputed highlight.

Blackcountryexile · 26/12/2022 15:29

The Place Where Lost Things Go from Mary Poppins Returns.
Beautiful but sad.

AllAboutMargot · 26/12/2022 15:29

We Kiss In A Shadow from the King and I, a yearning song about forbidden love. The last line - 'Behold .. how my lover loves me' full of emotion.

HowVeryLikeSibella · 26/12/2022 15:30

Depends on my mood.

But I think I'd say my all time favourites are Fred Astaire's ballads: either They Can't Take That Away From Me (Shall We Dance) or Just The Way You Look Tonight (Swing Time)

I always love the words to Hello Young Lovers from King and I. It's such a beautiful song and celebration of love across generations.

KangarooKenny · 26/12/2022 15:33

I love Shallow from A Star Is Born.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/12/2022 15:33

Hushabye mountain - Mary poppins - feed the birds runs it close

Pure imagination- Willy wonky

TrentCrimm · 26/12/2022 15:35

I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady

Also Wouldn't It Be Lovely from the same.

Slightly differently, Yorktown and Dear Theodosia from Hamilton.

I came on here to say this. Memories from Cats (which is now a film as well of course) is my absolute favourite.

Rogue1001MNer · 26/12/2022 15:40
