Is anyone excited to see this? I love Baz Luhrman films and this looks gorgeous. Used to be obsessed with Elvis which was a weird childhood hobby! Read everything about him, watched all the films up to my 20s then it waned. The trailers have re triggered my interest. And Tom Hanks - incredible actor, didn't recognise him in the trailer.
It's on my list, just have to persuade dh.

Saw it today was mesmerised by Austin.

My late sister was a massive fan. She wanted to die when he did. She was a lot older than me and I was brought up with his music.

My 87 year old mother in law was with us and she clapped at the end.

OneFrenchEgg · 29/06/2022 20:47

Aww I wanted to clap! But no one else did so I had to sit on my hands.

Just got back from seeing Elvis and thought it was excellent. I don't know much about Elvis beyond his better known songs.

I've only seem Austin Butler as Tex Watson getting his face smashed by Brad Pitt's character in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but his performance here was charismatic and mesmerising.

xsquared · 29/06/2022 21:03

Somebody started clapping but it died down when no one else was. Was only a small cinema with small audience and I think I was the youngest there (43).

Wow. I’m just on the train home after watching Elvis. Feeling very drained and choked up. Sobbed at the end in the cinema although I was discreet so I didn’t disturb the other cinema goers.
Even though I had seen the real Elvis footage before and had certainly heard it many times, the absolute state of him at the end took my breath away. What a sad end to a great man who changed music and whose influence lives on today.
An absolutely beautiful piece of cinema, Baz Luhrmann has done a phenomenal job and Austin Butler is absolutely outstanding - the voice, the mannerisms.
Wow.

Mytholmroyd · 29/06/2022 23:37

I cried too - such a waste and the sense of him being trapped into a life he didnt want stuck in Las Vegas was very sad.

Austin Butler was just sensational.

@OneFrenchEgg Thanks! I know this sounds like an over the top reaction to a film about somebody I never met but I feel so flat today!! Elvis just provokes quite an emotional reaction to me anyway as my Dad was such a huge fan and, as I’ve mentioned before, Elvis music and films were the soundtrack to my childhood.
If I can dream, American trilogy, Any day now, amazing grace and burning love were all the songs we chose for my dads funeral five years ago. We took my dad to the Elvis/royal philharmonic concert in Nov 2016 one month before he unexpectedly died so I think my strong reaction is partly wrapped up in grief.
However, on a lighter note, my dad always joked than when he died and went to heaven he would go and find Elvis first then Jesus!! Priorities lol.

I really enjoyed this. It's very theatrical in its format and takes a little bit of getting used to. Austin Butler was amazing as Elvis and I've just read an article about the 4 hours of prosthetics that were used daily on him. Sadly Tom Hanks is always Woody to me. It was a very refreshing film - just that bit different.

Nitgel · 30/06/2022 23:32

Loved this, beautiful film apart from Tom hanks. 😁

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 01/07/2022 19:20

That was beautiful!! For a nearly 3 hour film it didn't feel it. Didn't drag! Everything worked so well. Such a sad story and the end scene with his performance got me nearly going

doadeer · 01/07/2022 19:41

I feel so so sad about how he died. Poor man.

I do think they probably down played his affairs a lot but it was such a small snapshot of his life.

The early scenes when his hips start going and the girls scream was very funny.

Such sex appeal!

OneFrenchEgg · 02/07/2022 07:15

Going to see it again today with ds. he really wants to , older ds has said he doesn't want to as Elvis wasn't a decent person (referring to the underage Priscilla / drugs) which surprised me as he obviously knows more about that then I imagined for a modern teen.
But I've noticed it's not on locally anymore which is weird.

I loved it. I always stay for the credits, and during that part they played rappers and hip hop artists performing his music - just a reminder that his influence remains today.

Austin was perfect in this role. Perfect.

Fitterbyfifty · 02/07/2022 08:52

The cover over the end credits was by Maneskin - the Italian group who won Eurovision last year. Dd is a big fan!

OneFrenchEgg · 02/07/2022 20:26

Ds loved it. We both sat silently for most of it , had to fill him in on Robert Kennedy and little Richard though.
Bloke next to us clearly thought he was at home - rustling, shuffling, loud comments, shouting over to his family - slightly distracting.
Glad I saw it again, there were bits I'd missed from first time

I’m also planning on going again, possibly on my own. Re end credits - we hung around a bit and I think Eminem was rapping. But do they play the Maneskin ‘if I can dream’ cover too?

OneFrenchEgg · 02/07/2022 22:02

There was a version of in the ghetto plus rapping I think, didn't hear mane skin but we were a bit distracted! Wish they still had ushers, really spoiled bits of it.

I might go again? And I'll stay for credits this time.

I loved it more second time round. There's so much detail.

Saw it on Friday.
Austin Butler was fantastic.
I am a big Tom Hanks fan, but I didn't actually think he was that good. What was with the accent? (I know he was supposed to be Dutch)
Was a great film though. The song performances were brilliant!

LetsGoCrazyPurpleBanana · 07/07/2022 15:40

We saw this last night. Not a fan of Elvis but love a good biopic. I LOVED it. Learnt alot from the movie. Austin was fantastic. Loved the first concert and the girls were hilarious. Heartbreaking at the end and I wasn't expecting to find it so emotional. I was so shocked at how he looked at the end. I cried 😭

EachandEveryone · 07/07/2022 23:30

I went today only ten of us in the posh cinema. I loved it so much. Cried alot. In the Ghetto gets me every time. I stayed til the very end and I dont normally do that. Just fantastic.
