Is anyone excited to see this? I love Baz Luhrman films and this looks gorgeous. Used to be obsessed with Elvis which was a weird childhood hobby! Read everything about him, watched all the films up to my 20s then it waned. The trailers have re triggered my interest. And Tom Hanks - incredible actor, didn't recognise him in the trailer.
It's on my list, just have to persuade dh.

The only thing I'm not liking is that I read some of his family (cousin) were really unhappy they weren't included although Priscilla and Lisa-Marie etc all loved it.

Big Elvis fan and big Tom Hanks fan, saw it last night, but obviously forgot I’m not a big Baz Luhrmann fan 😆 - snatches of brilliance, but overall neither of us liked it much (and several people walked out halfway through, never to return). Thought Austin Butler was great though.

Hated Tom Hanks role, but perhaps that’s the point, although would usually like the performance even if I didn’t like the character.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 25/06/2022 21:09

I just saw it. I loved it. It's sumptuous and clever. I agree it's too long though.

Austin Butler is, dare I say it, better looking than Elvis 😬, utterly convincing and exuded a control and star quality that made him seem more like Elvis than the real Elvis did!

Tom Hanks was awesome and played an unlikable character very well.

But I have to say Austin Butler's portrayal overshadowed Tom Hanks'. I couldn't take my eyes off of him.

OneFrenchEgg · 25/06/2022 21:55

obviously forgot I’m not a big Baz Luhrmann

I feel this would be a massive problem 😂 he's not exactly subtle in his style.

Yes going next week. X

Meltinthemiddle · 25/06/2022 23:29

I really enjoyed it once I got into the way it was filmed. I loved Austen butler and agree he was stunning and those lips! I genuinely thought they used prothetics or something but it's genuinely his lips! I agree hated the colonel character but love Tom Hanks so he did an amazing job. So sad though and can't believe he was only 42! Also made me think of Britney Spears and how she has also been exploited.

MinglingFlamingo · 26/06/2022 00:10

I've had a crush on and followed Austen Butler's career for years. So happy he's finally in a lead role in a feature length blockbuster. So might watch it for that alone

Oblomov22 · 26/06/2022 00:11

I want to see this.

nomistake · 26/06/2022 07:32

Came on here because I saw it last night, loved it! But absolutely classic MN comments on here trying to cancel Elvis 😂

OneFrenchEgg · 26/06/2022 08:49

Going today - really looking forward to it.

DD saw it yesterday and loved it.

Clickncollect · 26/06/2022 13:17

@OneFrenchEgg enjoy!!

ChinBristles · 26/06/2022 14:26

I thought:

  • the actor who played Elvis was immense

  • I would definitely have fancied Elvis

  • The film focussed way too much on the relationship with his manager and hardly anything on his drugtaking/overeating/relationship with Priscilla/Ginger. So although it was long, it had boring bits.

  • I don't actually like Baz Luhrman's narrative style. It's jumpy and odd. But I do like the visual stuff.

My mum and her friend (who was a fan at the time) thought it was incredible.

OneFrenchEgg · 26/06/2022 15:44

@Clickncollect thank you, really looking forward to it. Shall expect it to drag in places but be visually entertaining

I didn't actually find it too long at all but maybe that's because I missed the beginning!

SnotsGotTheBoobies · 26/06/2022 16:06

I’m sooooooo excited for this film!! It was my life’s ambition to marry elvis when I was younger. I was devastated when my gran told me he was dead. Blue Hawaii was my favourite elvis film.

OompaLoompaa · 26/06/2022 18:01

I absolutely loved it, I’m giving it a 9.5/10.

OompaLoompaa · 26/06/2022 18:02

It didn’t drag, I wished it was longer, I’ve never know a long film fly by like this one.

maddiemookins16mum · 26/06/2022 19:16

Austin Butler was amazing. The film was too long. Tom Hanks was somewhat creepy.
7.5/10 - worth a watch though.

OneFrenchEgg · 26/06/2022 21:55

Oh wow. I want to go again without dh or my friends! Amazing. I felt quite shattered at the end of it, it definitely tells a section of his life and misses some stuff (hinted at).
Tom Hanks was incredible.
Everyone was human.
The only bit I felt was missing was his humour.

realsavagelike · 26/06/2022 22:56

Like some pp, I am not an Elvis fan at all even though I appreciate his cultural impact. I absolutely loved the movie though, and didn't find it too long.

SandrasAnnoyingFriend · 28/06/2022 09:58

Loved it. I actually wasn't mad about Tom Hanks in it for some reason
Yes it's long but it's really very entertaining so I was transfixed. That boy is def getting an Oscars nomination, he's so good.
The film is very flattering to Elvis, I expect he wasn't entirely a victim and was problematic in his own way.

Clickncollect · 28/06/2022 12:15

I still have to wait another 30 hours until I see this film - argh!! Sounds like I may be going to see it more than once though.
Glad everyone has been enjoying it and this thread is really building up the excitement for me - thanks.

30 hours! Oh no 😂 it's so good though. Ds wants to see it so I'm going back.

I've just seen it. Austin Butler is mesmerising but I guess Elvis was too. came away thinking Elvis was just a vulnerable guy surrounded by people who preyed on that. I think his parents were vulnerable too. I'm sorry the film didn't mention the awards he won for his gospel albums, but I suppose they had to pick and choose what they included.
