Is anyone excited to see this? I love Baz Luhrman films and this looks gorgeous. Used to be obsessed with Elvis which was a weird childhood hobby! Read everything about him, watched all the films up to my 20s then it waned. The trailers have re triggered my interest. And Tom Hanks - incredible actor, didn't recognise him in the trailer.
It's on my list, just have to persuade dh.

Yes, yes, YES! I’m really excited for this film having been raised on Elvis and we are huge fans in our family. Just a shame my lovely Dad isn’t around anymore to see it.
I’m sure Baz Luhrman will do a great job and it has the Presley family stamp of approval. The trailers look great and I’m sure I’ll have a cry!

OneFrenchEgg · 11/06/2022 23:57

Oh a fellow fan! I can't wait, I know he was weird but the whole beautiful man, beautiful music, excess everywhere should translate so well to screen.

If by weird you mean attracted to.teenage girls and extremely problematic then ok you do you i suppose.

StrawberryLipstickStateOfMind1 · 13/06/2022 12:42

I'm not a fan as such but definitely will be seeing the film, it looks great.

OneFrenchEgg · 14/06/2022 17:01

Baz Luhrman just gets it right with the staging and theatrical stuff. I loved Romeo and Juliet.

@OneFrenchEgg When are you planning to go? I’m booked for 29th June because my sister is away this weekend and she would kill me if I dared to go without her. But the waiting is hard, I REALLY want to see this film!

OneFrenchEgg · 23/06/2022 12:24

@Clickncollect hopefully this weekend - friends want to come and do Screen X to get the full Luhrman!

Just back from seeing this. I really enjoyed it, it's at least half an hour too long but overall really enjoyable. He doesn't look much like Elvis but captures the persona completely. There's a few moments at certain angles when he could be the real thing. Surprised to find myself welling up at the end (it's not like I didn't know how it would turn out!).

OneFrenchEgg · 24/06/2022 19:56

@suckingonchillidogs oh that's good to know. I think Tom Hanks is going to be so good. Do they use any original footage or soundtracks?

OP posts:
suckingonchillidogs · 24/06/2022 20:35

Yes, towards the end they show real footage - makes you realise how extraordinary looking the real deal was! Tom Hanks is great too

Clickncollect · 24/06/2022 20:46

Oh I am envious that people are seeing it and my sister is making me wait until 29th!
But I’m glad you enjoyed it.
I appreciate Elvis might not be everyone’s cup of tea but nobody can deny what an impact he made and how he is a true icon. I’m biased as Elvis was the soundtrack to my childhood thanks to my dad so I have a lot of nostalgia attached to his films and music.
I know I’ll be crying throughout!!

inmyslippers · 24/06/2022 20:55

Ah yes the drug addict that stole his music
From black people and liked teen girls. Will make an interesting watch

suckingonchillidogs · 24/06/2022 21:59

They show exactly where he got his influences from and give credit where credit was due, this isn't glossed over at all

Same here - he was always played in our house and I watched his films as a kid. Was definitely in love with young Elvis until I grew up, realised he was dead and read some biographies...lost my adoration at that point! But undeniably he was an incredible showman.

Just booked! I'm not an Elvis fan at all but it looks interesting

Clickncollect · 25/06/2022 09:26

@OneFrenchEgg Elvis died 3 months before I was born. Interestingly I don’t think I’ve ever fancied him as such, just kind of taken aback by how utterly handsome he is at certain points in his life. Maybe because he was completely unattainable and slightly too perfect looking in a way. But I completely appreciate the talent!!
Am SO frustrated that I have to wait until 29th. My sister has gone away for the weekend and it’s definitely a film we will see together.

That is good to hear. I look forward to seeing the film.

Itsvalentino · 25/06/2022 10:13

Brilliant film, went to watch it last night.

I can’t say I’m an Elvis fan, he’d been dead long before I was born, but I really enjoyed it.

It was quite intense and emotional in parts. Well worth a watch.

PrincessMeg · 25/06/2022 10:17

Maybe. It’s always hard to watch bio’s of people where there’s a lot of real footage of the person and Ever think of the actor as really being them. Especially when it’s Elvis, I just can’t imagine any actor being as attractive or charismatic in the same way as him. Usually it’s the other way around for biopic subjects.

Eddiesferret · 25/06/2022 10:24

I saw it yesterday afternoon in a gorgeous little independent cinema..

not a Elvis fan as such.. but LOVED the film. There will be complaints about the absence of the less palatable aspects to his life.. the young bride, the huge drug issues (although it is part of the film but more about 'Col.' Tom Parkers malevolent influence in this aspect of his life)

Austin Butler as Elvis is gorgeous to look at , has the moves and a great voice ..

I went with a massive Elvis fan who thought she wouldn't enjoy anything but the 'real thing' (She was right from the screaming Elvis era) but she loved it too !

Fitterbyfifty · 25/06/2022 10:37

We saw it last night and loved it. We're not big Elvis fans and the kids didn't know him at all but the music and scenography were amazing. Everyone enjoyed it. We missed the first 10 minutes though as we were running late!!

TabithaTittlemouse · 25/06/2022 10:40

A friend said it’s quite ‘heavy’?

Mushroo · 25/06/2022 10:41

Saw it last night and really enjoyed it - although it’s about 40 mins too long.

went into it with zero Elvis knowledge and I thought it was well done - it avoided the Elvis caricature.

ChuckBerrysBoots · 25/06/2022 10:45

Big Luhrmann fan, did think by the trailers that the actor playing Elvis didn’t quite have the right look (purely aesthetically, Elvis in his youth was an incredibly handsome man) but still keen to see it - luckily DH also a big Luhrmann fan so might have to swing a cinema date for this one

suckingonchillidogs · 25/06/2022 10:57

There were four women at our showing, came in chatting away obviously friends and of the Elvis era and excited to be seeing it. When it finished they all clapped, it was so lovely. I was only 4 when he died but grew up with his films.
