Is anyone excited to see this? I love Baz Luhrman films and this looks gorgeous. Used to be obsessed with Elvis which was a weird childhood hobby! Read everything about him, watched all the films up to my 20s then it waned. The trailers have re triggered my interest. And Tom Hanks - incredible actor, didn't recognise him in the trailer.
It's on my list, just have to persuade dh.

It's brilliant isn't it. I used to be obsessed as a kid with that black and whistle film he did.

I thought:

  • the actor who played Elvis was immense

  • I would definitely have fancied Elvis

  • The film focussed way too much on the relationship with his manager and hardly anything on his drugtaking/overeating/relationship with Priscilla/Ginger. So although it was long, it had boring bits.

  • I don't actually like Baz Luhrman's narrative style. It's jumpy and odd. But I do like the visual stuff.

My mum and her friend (who was a fan at the time) thought it was incredible.

Focused too much on his relationship with Col Tom Parker?

Thats because the film IS about their relationship, its not Elvis' life story, its how the Col exploited him because he was a compulsive gambler who couldn't leave the USA because he was an illegal immigrant. Which Elvis never knew, so the part when he calls him out on stage isn't true.
(But there's a few inaccuracies)

I've seen the film 5 times, with various family members from my 12 yo grandson to my 81 yo mum, absolutely fantastic film!

This is interesting. I need to dig out an Elvis book. What's the one in the opening scenes?

I think it’s really clever that Baz chose to focus on the relationship between Elvis and his manager because it gave a convenient reason to not include all his relationships. And it helps to explain why he stayed in his gilded cage because he couldn’t really afford to leave with all the people he had to support.
Cant wait to go and see it again!

CuriousMama · 08/07/2022 14:29

Which book is recommended?

EachandEveryone · 08/07/2022 21:55

I can wait to see it again either. Do you think when he sang Lonely this Christmas he was forced to or do you think he genuinely wanted to because he liked it?

Windbeneathmybingowings · 08/07/2022 22:00

Beautiful film. Big elvis fan, big baz fan, loved every moment, didn’t feel it was too long, 10/10 I’d say even with the historical inaccuracies, and Tom hanks weird accent. Loved it. Am going again!

CuriousMama · 08/07/2022 22:42

I just listened to a colonel Tom Parker interview. Sounds nothing like the Hanks version 🤔

Elvis didn't sing Lonely this Christmas, it was Mud back in 1970 something

EachandEveryone · 09/07/2022 13:37

That just goes to show what o remember from been 8 😂😂

Clickncollect · 09/07/2022 17:02

@CuriousMama Heard of him but not seen him in action. Have seen Sean Klutz and Dean Z at tribute gigs and they were decent. Dean Z did the 68 special era. He was prowling around the stage and a few drinks in plus squinting slightly, it was like Elvis was there lol!

mochimoons · 13/07/2022 10:06

Can't wait to see this I love Baz Luhrmann!

ElderflowerTonic · 16/07/2022 23:25

My mind is blown by the fact that the same actor was Elvis and Tex in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. He was great in both.
I loved the film and really liked the way his life was tied into the politics of the US at the time. I pretty much cried from 1968 to the end.

samsam123 · 17/07/2022 12:53

about an hour too long, didnt realise it was Tom Hanks

SkeletonFight · 17/07/2022 13:22

but he looks just like Woody 😂😂

I’m planning on taking myself off to see this tomorrow or Tuesday. Out of the heat and into a nice cool cinema. Can’t wait!

Cocolapew · 20/07/2022 23:39

Finally got to see it tonight and loved it, Austin is phenomenal in it, especially as Vegas Elvis. I didn't find it long, I could have watched more.

maddy68 · 20/07/2022 23:43

I did enjoy it but was slightly underwhelmed. I thought it could be better. The script was sketchy

Kanaloa · 25/07/2022 18:38

I thought it was good in parts and the costuming was great, and Austin Butler did a good job of Elvis.

But I also didn’t care for all the flashing around, and I felt that despite being very very long it was a strangely ‘shallow’ film. It glossed over a lot of things and never really allowed for a deep look into any of the characters really.

Agree 100% on this. It felt like an extended trailer.

The actor was phenomenonal but the story was very superficial it never really got into it.

I’m going to see it for a second time on Thursday!

Wow. I’m just on the train home after watching Elvis. Feeling very drained and choked up. Sobbed at the end in the cinema although I was discreet so I didn’t disturb the other cinema goers.
Even though I had seen the real Elvis footage before and had certainly heard it many times, the absolute state of him at the end took my breath away. What a sad end to a great man who changed music and whose influence lives on today.
An absolutely beautiful piece of cinema, Baz Luhrmann has done a phenomenal job and Austin Butler is absolutely outstanding - the voice, the mannerisms.
Wow.

I could have written this post 😊

I'm 45 and although know how incredible he was and enjoyed some of his music I wouldn't say I've ever been a fan but by god, this blew me away (watched today) . And yes I felt strangely emotional all the way through and quite chocked up at the end.
The early scenes with the gospel choir and little Elvis almost made me cry but in a weirdly uplifted way!
Incredible 3 hours

OneFrenchEgg · 27/07/2022 21:47

I think what I actually really loved was that this was one of Elvis's stories rather than trying to address a straightforward biography. This was the cheated Elvis, who loved Priscilla. Not the unfaithful Elvis, not the weird morgue and gun obsessed Elvis, not the engaged to Ginger Elvis. At first I felt it was maybe a bit of a failing but actually it's so well done. It's the story some of his friends would have told.

I saw tweet which stated that the bad of elvis should not be left out of his movie. This to include often taking his wife to the cemetery unconciouse and the life leading up to his death.
