The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

@DanceForMeColin

Hunt For The Wilderpeople - it’s a kiwi film and utterly delightful
I came on to suggest this! Utterly wonderful film.
NaturesEnd · 10/11/2020 22:24

I loved sightseers too, midsommar, bit gory in parts I suppose, naked although not really obscure, Tyrannosaur, these are all quite depressing ha, I don't have any lighthearted examples.

IckyPop · 10/11/2020 22:25

Eagle vs Shark

TheSmallAssassin · 10/11/2020 22:27

None of these are British, but I love Safety Not Guaranteed. Another favourite is Together, also enjoyed We Are The Best by the same director. Sorry To Bother You is pretty quirky.

mammmamia · 10/11/2020 22:29

Parasite

Not British through

Also wondering if hunt for the wilder people is suitable for 10 year olds?

TheSmallAssassin · 10/11/2020 22:29

@IckyPop

Eagle vs Shark
Oh, I liked that too, another New Zealand one to watch is The Breaker Upperers

@DuzzyFuck I came on to say The Fundamentals of Caring too. Very charming film!

eandz13 · 10/11/2020 22:30

@TheJourneyWoman I came to say The Way Way Back. Ace film

Waking Ned. Charming.

Recently watched The Peanut Butter Falcon, it was great. What We Did On Our Holidays and Eddie the Eagle were much better than expected. My kids loved Eddie the Eagle.

"Under the Shadows" - British film but set in Teheran in the 1980s. In Farsi. A horror film.
Totally not what I usually like. But it's brilliant. The main actress is fantastic.
It's on Netflix.

Hunt for the wilderpeople

Juliet, Naked. British film with pure quirkiness at its core. Appeared on Netflix a few weeks ago, was a shame I hadn't caught at cinema when it was released.
I just watched this recently, it is lovely
PuppyMonkey · 10/11/2020 22:34

I just watched the new version of David Copperfeld tonight - the one with Dev Patel- and it is utterly charming and quirky. And British! Hurrah!

waltzingparrot · 10/11/2020 22:34

Where am I going to find all these films?
We have Sky/Netflix - there not going to be on there are they?

The straight story

RomanMum · 10/11/2020 22:35

An Awfully Big Adventure.

PuppyMonkey · 10/11/2020 22:38

David Copperfield was on Prime I think.

Wouldn’t most films be on Sky? Otherwise what’s the point of it? Grin

Re: Hunt for the Wilderpeople - suitability for 10 year olds.

The Parent's Guide on the IMDB site has quite comprehensive information about what's in this film.

Lawless Heart - one if my favourites. No one's ever seen it. One morning my father rang me to tell me about this fantastic film he'd seen in the night. I told him it was the film I kept telling him about. It is a delight. Douglas Henshall is incredible in it.

MrDarcysMa · 10/11/2020 22:39

Peanut butter falcon agreed is great. And tyrannosaur. Not a happy watch but it knocked my socks of!
And speaking of Peter mullan 'hector' is wonderful. I went to stay in rye overnight to watch it as it was the only cinema showing it !

TheSmallAssassin · 10/11/2020 22:39

Some of them are on Netflix. You can rent/buy stuff on Google Play Movies/Apple/Amazon Prime if you're keen. If you Google a film it will tell you where it's available.

bonbonours · 10/11/2020 22:40
