The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

@FurrySlipperBoots

I really enjoyed 'The Love Punch', and I'm fussy about films as I get bored easily.
Absolutely agree. Hilarious film!! 🤣 🤣 🤣 🤣

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri. Not for kids and a very dark beginning... but it warms up. And full of the unexpected.

applesauce1 · 10/11/2020 23:01

I also came along to say Eagle vs. Shark

People here might know, I watched a film about a guy being a teacher for a child underground? There was some kind of twist, ring a bell with anyone?

[quote Throughabushbackwards]The Castle! Aussie classic.

I loved this film when I saw it in the cinema back in the day and have never been able to find it since. We went looking for it in lockdown after watching The Dish and being reminded of it and couldn’t find it - do you know where we can watch it?

Graffitiqueen · 10/11/2020 23:05

Parasite is one of the best films I've seen recently

TheFlis12345 · 10/11/2020 23:05

If you like Country, Wild Rose. The main character is slightly infuriating but the music is wonderful.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 10/11/2020 23:06

I loved Martha meets Frank daniel and Lawrence I need to rewatch
And hunt for the wilder people, jojo rabbit and what we do in the shadows
My suggestions not mentioned already would be
Knives out
Chef

tigerbear · 10/11/2020 23:06

Life of Pi - DD (9) loved this.

NaturesEnd · 10/11/2020 23:07

If you like French films the new girlfriend is on bbciplayer, pretty quirky, also happy end.

Needcoffeecoffeecoffee · 10/11/2020 23:11

And unicorn store on netflix

Not British quirky but vampires v bronx was unexpectedly good and lighthearted but not sure it quite fits the bill

This thread has made me think of the movie Garden State. The best! Haven't seen it in so long, want to watch it right now!

bellinique · 10/11/2020 23:15

Troop Zero (somewhat reminiscent of Little Miss Sunshine)

Boy (by the same person who did Jojo Rabbit)

The Brand New Testament (not suitable for children or those who take religion very seriously)

Buggedandconfused · 10/11/2020 23:16

Following!

Not British and good luck finding it - The Milagro Beanfield War

bellinique · 10/11/2020 23:17

Or just anything by Taika Waititi

applepineapple · 10/11/2020 23:18

Swimming With Men. A gentle comedy about an all male synchronised swimming group. Very sweet and one of my faves.

Into the west
Watermelon

docemmett · 10/11/2020 23:24

Little Monsters, Garden State

YouKnowWhoo · 10/11/2020 23:24

Happiness - it popped into my head yesterday. Amazing film. I just watch it again.

Lost in Translation. Oh bill Murray, oh that friendship!

I really enjoyed that peanut butter falcon movie too. When he says the meanest thing he can think of “you’re not coming to my birthday!”. Sooooo good.

Puppylucky · 10/11/2020 23:28

I loved dogma when I saw it a few years ago. Funny quirky and very clever. Also the Disaster Artist - once seen never forgotten (in a good way!)

JaneJeffer · 10/11/2020 23:35

God's Own Country

Greektome · 10/11/2020 23:40

Sideways
Groundhog Day

BeaMends · 10/11/2020 23:44

Local Hero. Fantastic soundtrack as well.
