The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Definitely Harold and Maud - as quirky as they get! Great evocative soundtrack by Cat Stevens.

Rafferty and the Gold Dust Twins with Alan Arkin.

Comfort and Joy with Bill Paterson and Claire Grogan - about the Glasgow ice-cream wars!

caravanshed · 10/11/2020 23:53

Tatie Danielle - a nice French one.

Hawkins001 · 10/11/2020 23:57

That Sinking Feeling - Bill Forsyth's first, low budget film and forerunner of Gregory's Girl etc. You probably do need to be able to understand Glaswegian accents though. I believe it was shown with subtitles in the USA.
Local Hero - more Forsyth and I actually think his films lost a bit of something once he was famous and there were big name actors involved, but I still love this film.
The Parole Officer - Steve Coogan's first film. I am not actually a fan of his but I laugh til I cry every time I watch this even though I know exactly what's coming now.

Destination Wedding on Netflix. Recently made, opposites attract offbeat rom com with Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder in the lead roles. Sardonic, witty and great performances.

Please someone back me up in my recommendation of Skeletons by Nick Whitfield.

"The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical"

It's probably unmistakeably British and definitely understated.

Your description could be written as a review of this film.

It's original, quirky, warm hearted and funny but not at all sickly/sentimental. I had no interest in watching it from the description but am so glad I did. I have no idea why it's not more known and better loved.

Loving the Taika Waititi love on here. The original film of What We Do in the Shadows is on iPlayer until the 23rd. Haven't seen it yet but planning to watch it this weekend.

Bouledeneige · 11/11/2020 00:33

Oh not quirky but a total classic - Withnail and I

waltzingparrot · 11/11/2020 00:37

Well I have a long long list that should keep me going way beyond lockdown2 to us all being vaccinated I should think.

I wonder how many absolute gems of films have been lost to time. Hard to find unless someone recommends them, so thank you all, but feel free to keep adding.

Sorry, didn't like The Lobster.....although it definitely fits the quirky brief.

Ghost World
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

Knives Out and Clue, both very quirky, hugely entertaining murder mysteries with stellar casts.

Knives Out is on Amazon video, not sure about Clue.

I love a good quirky, low-budget, independent type film, so I’m going to take note of a few of these suggestions.

Already mentioned several times but, my most recent favourite film is The Peanut Butter Falcon. The title put me off it originally but my DD said I must watch it, and I’m so glad I did!

Also, Calibre is a great little Scottish film - not many laughs in it though!

Dotinthecity · 11/11/2020 05:48

If they haven't already been mentioned, Started for 10, Blinded by the Light and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

AlinaSquareQueen · 11/11/2020 05:54

Also, Fish Tank, with Michael Fassbender.

It’s a gritty, hard-hitting, expletive-filled British film but I really enjoyed it. Some great acting from all the cast, most of whom not well-known at all.

Placemarking for some good recommendations

We watched Game Night on Netflix with the kids recently. Quirky, slightly ridiculous but very funny. Particularly if you like playing board games and can see some truth in where the competitiveness can end...

longwayoff · 11/11/2020 06:16

Not British, Italian with subtitles, Cinema Paradise. The short version that won the Palme D'Or, not the longer dreary directors cut. It's an absolute delight. Is on Netflix or Prime.

MrGorsky · 11/11/2020 06:19

All on Netflix

This is where I leave you- ensemble film about a death but quite funny and moving

Captain Fantastic- Also about a death actually but really good.

Adult life skills- British and quirky. Got the woman from broadchurch/ dr who in it.

Wine Country

Connie Pilby

The land of steady habits

Crakeandoryx · 11/11/2020 06:25

Love this thread thank you.

We liked Paradise as well

Wild is fabulous

Anything by studio Ghibli, my neighbour Tortoro, Spirited Away etc are beautiful films.

There are lots on here I've not seen and will be looking for.

LolalovesLondon · 11/11/2020 06:26

Watched Summerland at the weekend.
Really liked it.
