The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Once

Throughabushbackwards · 10/11/2020 21:52

The Castle! Aussie classic.

Little Miss Sunshine
Juno
The Young Offenders

garlictwist · 10/11/2020 21:55

Placemarking. Although I'm afraid to say I really disliked Juno.

SillyUnMurphy · 10/11/2020 21:55

I was also going to say ‘What we did on our holidays’. Not British that I really (surprisingly) enjoyed was Uncut Gems

Needanewnamenow · 10/11/2020 21:56

Another vote for hunt for the wilderpeople. Wonderful, wonderful film

IHaveBrilloHair · 10/11/2020 21:56

Handsome Devil, its Irish.

knackersknockersknickers · 10/11/2020 21:56

Lars and the real girl

Sarahlou63 · 10/11/2020 21:57

'A Good Year" with Russell Crowe. Superb - and the tennis scene is hilarious!

ThursdayLastWeek · 10/11/2020 21:58

If you like wilderpeople you might like Jojo Rabbit too. Same director. Same irreverent but moving feel.

FredtheFerret · 10/11/2020 21:58

I enjoyed Sliding Doors.

PlonkyPlink · 10/11/2020 21:59

“I Don’t Feel at Home in this World Anymore” is a wonderful quirky life-affirming indie flick.

Sunshine on Leith
What we did on our Holiday

SofiaAmes · 10/11/2020 22:04

Pride - based on a true story about the miners and the gays fighting Margaret Thatcher.

Cantreasonwithunreasonable · 10/11/2020 22:07

Yes to Sightseers / Little Miss Sunshine. (is that British?)
From Australia - Animal Kingdom (a slightly hard watch...)
High Rise, if you have the stomach for it.
Quirky - Wes Anderson's Fantastic Mr Fox (animation and USA, but still...)

vipersinc · 10/11/2020 22:09
@vipersinc Seen all those. We obviously like the same level of quirk!
I'll look out for your recommendations then Grin

Sixty Six. Very random film about a Jewish boy whose Bar Mitzvah takes place on the day of the 1966 World Cup final. Stars Helena Bonham Carter, Peter Serafinowicz, Eddie Marsan, Catherine Tate and Stephen Rea.

It’s a very quirky film but really lovely.

Shireslass · 10/11/2020 22:13

Amelie- loved it and re watch it often.

Christmasmcchristmasface · 10/11/2020 22:13

Three and out
British Indy dark comedy fantastic cast including Mackenzie crook Colin new eye and Imelda staunton

Sadik · 10/11/2020 22:13

Separado! Documentary featuring Gruff Rhys from the Super Furry Animals travelling through Patagonia in search of his long lost uncle. Hilarious, very (very!) low budget, and some great music :)

12BottlesOfVintageChampagne · 10/11/2020 22:13

Heartlands, with Michael Sheen. Utterly charming.

waltzingparrot · 10/11/2020 22:17

I might have over emphasised the 'British' thing.

Loved The Dish, Jo Jo Rabbit and What we did on our holidays (surprisingly moving sea burial)

Twin Town (has a bit of a cult following in Wales)

waltzingparrot · 10/11/2020 22:20

A Shine of Rainbows - very moving
