Any recommendations for a quirky little gem of a film

The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

It really is a wee gem.

I watched Brassed Off again last week, after I saw the stage adaptation in Leeds last weekend (superb btw). Brilliant film for understanding the psyche of S Yorks, even a generation later (I live on the S/W Yorks border; work about a mile away from Grimethorpe with a lot of ex miners and their sons, on a business park on an old colliery site).

I used to use Love Film. It's a DVD rental service that was taken over by Cinema Paradiso. I would check out all the films playing in local small independent cinemas which showed foreign and quirkier films and then rent them. It was a great way to see more unusual films.

Just finished Project Hail Mary on Prime. Had no idea about it beforehand - I just thought I'll watch Ryan Gosling in anything! Gosh, it's wonderful. Apparently the book's a cult classic: reluctant space scientist saves the galaxy against all odds. It includes the funniest space walk scene, many other nicely-judged comedy moments and much heart-warming emotion. Distinctly quirky.

Velvet Goldmine (1997) was just on film4.

It works as an indie film about 70s rock stars and basically Bowie and Iggy Pop etc, but the thing at the time was it featured all the young beautiful people of late 90s London Groucho club / coke raddled nightlife and was hyped to death as THE most groundbreaking film about the 1970s Ever Made.

Now though it just gives chills realising it was made nearly 30 years ago and was referencing a time barely 25 years before that

I love a quirky film with that much heart in it.

In a different vein, as it's very British humour, A Bunch of Amateurs has one of the most moving end scenes I've found in any film.

Good Boy is on Prime (no extra charge) now. I am not sure it counts as quirky but it hasn’t yet screened in our cinemas. Stars Stephen Graham abducting a young offender to rehabilitate him (sort of!)

I started this thread (six years ago 😱) by recommending a little gem of a film 'Marvellous' starring Toby Jones. It's finally free to view on Prime for anyone interested. Time for a rewatch for me!

Just finished Good Boy, @stilldumdedumming. Crikey, that was heavy! I watched it in three segments, so I didn't get too disturbed 😳 Faultless acting.
