The type that doesn't sound great in its synopsis but turned out to be brilliantly entertaining, moving, hysterical. It's probably British. Definitely understated.

I'll offer Marvellous with Toby Jones

Swimming with men. Brilliant film about men doing synchronised swimming.

ticktock19 · 10/11/2020 22:44

Green Book...very poignant, set in the US and mesmerising acting and a wonderful story.

jellybe · 10/11/2020 22:46

Oh see you've seen swimming with men. What about 'what we did on our holiday'? Brilliant dark comedy.

EllieFredrickson · 10/11/2020 22:47

Sing Street - probably not for 10 year old but good if you grew up in the 80s.

Opal71 · 10/11/2020 22:47

Belleville rendezvous I’d definitely recommend it if you haven’t already seen it

Blinded by the Light quite quirky too.

LaBelleEpoque · 10/11/2020 22:49

No one has mentioned Brigsby Bear. Not British but quirky and lovely.

LittleRa · 10/11/2020 22:50

Still Life, with actor Eddie Marsan

The Wave is brilliant if you like world cinema.

TooTrusting · 10/11/2020 22:53

Saving Grace. Set in Cornwall with Brenda Blethin and Rhys Ifans and the man who played Baptiste in Missing. Really, really funny.

DesperatelySeekingSunshine · 10/11/2020 22:53

If you don’t mind subtitles DH and I really enjoyed Goodbye Lenin. It’s set in former East Berlin and is about a family who’s mother wakes up from a coma. They don’t want to give her any shocks, so they pretend that the Wall never came down.
Doesn’t sound like much, but has that lovely gentle funny quirky feel to it

LoisWilkersonslastnerve · 10/11/2020 22:53

Not for young kids though. Teens would like it.

TooTrusting · 10/11/2020 22:53

@Bunnybigears

Saving Grace with Brenda Blethyn
My favourite!!! Cross posted.

'Pili' - a very moving film, set in Tanzania and in Swahili, but subtitled, British backed and produced, with an almost all amateur cast, beautifully acted, very thought provoking, full of pathos, some lighter moments.

'The Boy Who Harnessed The Wind' - as above, but set in Malawi and a true story

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 10/11/2020 22:55

Can I just say thank you OP for this brilliant thread.

sallysparrow157 · 10/11/2020 22:56

Definitely quirky (and is Russian and subtitled so most certainly not British) - House of Fools - Chechen troops take over a psychiatric hospital, the staff all run away leaving the patients and the soldiers. Bryan Adams is in it. It’s the loveliest most touching film

MelindaGordon · 10/11/2020 22:57

Agree Under the Shadows is great but this and some similar suggestions probably wouldn’t suit younger children (if that’s a requirement). For family viewing with older children, my 10 and 13 year old together they’ve both enjoyed Peanut Butter Falcon and Hunt for the Wilderpeople and watched both twice. But would add Fighting with My Family - British cast etc but guest appearance from The Rock. Jojo Rabbit sounded awful to us but was another huge hit when we actually watched it. Not British though.

FurrySlipperBoots · 10/11/2020 22:58

I really enjoyed 'The Love Punch', and I'm fussy about films as I get bored easily.

DuesToTheDirt · 10/11/2020 22:59

Dean Spanley, it's on Amazon Prime.

Elderflower14 · 10/11/2020 22:59

The Bridge with Saskia Reeve, Joss Auckland and Geraldine James.
Dear Frankie with Gérard Butler before he came a Hollywood star and Emily Mortimer and Sharon Small.
