Not sure what they are called but films that describe an actual historical event or person. Like the titanic, the impossible, flight 93, 127 hours.

Although they make me weep buckets I find them so interesting.

What are your best based-on-real-life films please??

Pearl Harbour absolutely ruins me every time 😭

Doyoumind · 05/08/2019 23:36

Lion is based on a real life story. Also 84 Charing Cross Road.

Doyoumind · 05/08/2019 23:37

And The Elephant Man, of course.

BikeRunSki · 05/08/2019 23:39

I loved Sully.

In the Name of the Father, about the Guildford 6/IRA

Catch Me If You Can is based on a real story, but I think a bit embellished for the movie. It’s a beautiful looking film, not grim reality!

The Dam Busters

Definitely agree with Pride and Hidden Figures.

I'll add The Damned United, about Brian Clough managing Leeds United. Is excellent, particularly if you like football.

Steel Magnolias is based on a true story. Funny and sad at the same time.

PotteringAlong · 05/08/2019 23:42

Iris

BinkySodPlop · 05/08/2019 23:43

The Woman in Gold. And I also enjoyed Hidden Figures.

I agree with Apollo 13 - I cry everytime! (And it makes me want to smoke loads, as I used to when watching it, which sounds terrible as an ex-smoker!)

EskewedBeef · 05/08/2019 23:46

I agree with a lot of these, and will add Zulu because I like a traditional epic. Also Schindler's List, although it's actually unbearable so I haven't watched it for years.

Downfall is brilliant, about the last days in Hitler's bunker.

Also The Pianist, and Amistad. Both completely heartbreaking.

Thirteen Days - about the Cuban Missile Crisis with Bruce Greenwood and Kevin Costner.

The Normal Heart - Mark Ruffalo and Matt Bomer in a film about the AIDS crisis in the 80s in the gay community. Outstanding performances

Dallas Buyers Club - about a guy with AIDS who brings experimental drugs into the US, (illegally), with the hope of extending his and other sufferers lives.

Philomena - about forced adoption in Ireland. Judi Dench and Steve Coogan both excellent.

Argh, sorry - it kept saying it hadn't posted!!!! (But yes, I really like Dallas Buyers Club and Philomena!!)

Oh yeah, I've just re-watched The Imitation Game. Don't bother.

But on a theme of films about real mathmos, Cumberbatch also did a film called Hawking in 2004, which was quite good.

The more recent film on Stephen Hawking, The Theory Of Everything, was so well done it was actually quite freaky to watch (I watched it with folk who knew Prof H).

I can't speak to the accuracy of Russell Crowe's A Beautiful Mind, about John Nash, but it's a good film.

PerkingFaintly · 06/08/2019 09:33

Agree with Philomena.

Watched We Bought a Zoo after MN recommended it – lovely.
