Best based on real life films... like titanic, the impossible etc

Not sure what they are called but films that describe an actual historical event or person. Like the titanic, the impossible, flight 93, 127 hours.

Although they make me weep buckets I find them so interesting.

What are your best based-on-real-life films please??

A Night to Remember. It was filmed in the 1950s, but it was much more about the Titanic than "Titanic".

Brassed Off, about the coal mine closures, and the effect on the communities. Although it was about a fictional colliery in a fictional town, it was clearly based on real events.

Schindler’s List

ErrolTheDragon · 06/08/2019 09:56

A Night to Remember.

They serialised that on radio4 decades ago. There's some really good radio dramas based on real life too, of course.

American Sniper is good

The Big Short is brilliant but more funny than harrowing

12 years a slave

WellGoshDarnIt · 06/08/2019 14:16

Oh I love We Bought A Zoo! I'm planning to take DD to the place it was based on, (in Devon, I think?). Lovely film.

GreyGardens88 · 06/08/2019 14:19

I couldn't stand Into the Wild, the character was an insufferable brat

Leakinglikeacolander · 06/08/2019 14:24

@GreyGardens88 I felt exactly the same.
An oldie but a goodie has to be The Great Escape.

SilentSister · 06/08/2019 14:32

Lots of good ones already mentioned.

Watched "Spotlight" on BBC iplayer this week. Riveting watch, great performances. Documents the exposure of Catholic priests abusing children in Boston, and the cover up that took decades to come to light. The cover up by both the community and the church was breathtaking.

Orlandointhewilderness · 06/08/2019 18:02

I liked 'heavenly creatures'.
It about the Parker - Hulme murder case in 50s New Zealand. Incredibly well made film.

JP79 · 06/08/2019 18:24

Hacksaw Ridge
Lion
Hidden Figures
The Theory of Everything
A Beautiful Mind
The Social Network

I too love a film based on a true story.

Littlemissmax · 18/08/2019 02:31

Schindlers List, The other Boleyn girl, Sully, Elizabeth and Changling are some of my favourites

Graphista · 18/08/2019 03:41

My votes are for:

Men of honor - just incredible!

The blind side (if you don't cry at the scene where he gets his own bed you are made of stone!)

Erin brockovich I still love

Spotlight is excellent but could be too much of a tough watch for some, took me a while to feel OK watching it, but I think an important film to see.

All the presidents men

127 hours - dd and I ended up seeing this "by accident" as we got the time of the film we intended to see wrong and we were blown away!

Silkwood I love too

Lorenzos oil - again very tough watch

Dangerous minds is ok but somewhat sanitised. The book (as always) is better

Coach carter is similar and enjoyable enough

In the name of the father - I think important to see given the possible return of a hard border in Ireland in coming months. People seem to have forgotten/be in denial about all the stuff relating to the troubles

Milk - about Harvey milk is good

The impossible is utterly heartbreaking and I think so well portrays how terrifying that must have been.

The Butler is ok but can be a bit too Forrest Gump like in places trying to cover such a long period of time.

Dallas buyers club - also heartbreaking

One few people would have heard of but I would totally recommend seeing is

Fruitvale station - a completely heartbreaking story but also because Michael b Jordan is the lead actor in it and I LOVE him as an actor.

SimplySteveRedux · 18/08/2019 06:41

The Widowmaker and (I think it's based on a real event) The Fault In Our Stars (apologies if not).

MaidenMotherCrone · 18/08/2019 07:06

Schindlers List Sad

The Man Who Knew Infinity

Eat Pray Love

Flight 93 & United 93 - Sad

VivaLeBeaver · 18/08/2019 07:22

I just watched July 22 about the Norway island shooting. Worth watching.

FromRussiaWithGloves · 18/08/2019 07:35

Green Book: "A working-class Italian-American bouncer becomes the driver of an African-American classical pianist on a tour of venues through the 1960s American South."

On the Basis of Sex: "A biographical legal drama film based on the life and early cases of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg."

Definitely Hidden Figures

I like it when they show pictures/video of the real people at the end.

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 18/08/2019 07:50

Hidden Figures
Pride

Eddie the Eagle
Fighting with my Family

Last 2 are British 'sports' movies and are both very uplifting - think Eddie has been changed quite a bit for dramatic purposes but it's still great and the gist is there.

Killed By My Debt

Absolutely amazing.

BillyAndTheSillies · 18/08/2019 08:13

The Normal Heart is fantastic. But I watched it on a plane and really need to see the unedited version.

Watched "American Made" last night, easy to watch and funny if you don't mind Tom Cruise.

Into Thin Air - wasn't as hard hitting as the book but still wonderfully shot and tells the story well.

LadyGAgain · 18/08/2019 08:16

Hotel Rwanda

Invictus

Sully

A league of their own Blush

LadyGAgain · 18/08/2019 08:17

Oh and Hidden Figures is amazing.
