Best based on real life films... like titanic, the impossible etc

Not sure what they are called but films that describe an actual historical event or person. Like the titanic, the impossible, flight 93, 127 hours.

Although they make me weep buckets I find them so interesting.

What are your best based-on-real-life films please??

Can You Ever Forgive Me? About a destitute writer who starts to make a lot of money selling forged literary letters. It’s hilarious and very moving and Melissa McCarthy and Richard E Grant are fab in it.

Alpha dog. Emotional rollercoaster

Quite an old film.

Alive about a South American sports team whose plane crashes in Andes mountains and their physical and mental struggles to survive and be rescued.

I think it really shows how the strong the human will to survive can be.

Ob yea Alive. and also the blind side and hotel rwanda

ImportantWater · 29/08/2019 00:03

Milk
Spotlight
And a bit more historical, Bright Star

I agree with a PP that Tom Hanks is always watchable - he was very good in Captain Phillips. He played the captain of a ship that gets hijacked by pirates.

I recently watched First Man, about Neil Armstrong. It gave a different slant on the moon landing story.

Really want to watch Hidden Figures.

Morningonthebeach · 29/08/2019 00:13

Agree with Hidden Figures.

A pp said Saving Mr Banks but I would add that as its produced by Disney, its characterisation of Walt Disney was a little...um... biased and I found it a bit hard to take.

Ditto with The Impossible which is based on a Hispanic family I think, recast them as white, they all survived while the film is full of dying asians. Difficult to watch.

The Killing Fields
The one where the man gets his arm trapped on the mountain....126 hours? Can't remember the number of hours Blush

I rather liked Made In Dagenham. And North Country. Both gave me a bit of a kick up the pants to pay more attention to feminism.

Sux2buthen · 03/09/2019 00:33

Ooh yes 127 hours. Very good film

Bobismyfriend · 08/09/2019 21:33

Another vote for The Dish - beautiful, beautiful, heartwarming film!

I also love A League of Their Own (Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna, Rosie O'Donnell - great cast!) which is about the women's baseball league that was started during WW2. It makes me laugh and cry in equal measure!

NuzzleandScratch · 08/09/2019 21:59

The Founder - the story of McDonalds, really interesting.

Another vote for Saving Mr Banks, Emma Thompson is wonderful!

Veterinari · 08/09/2019 22:02

Made in Dagenham
Hidden figures
The Butler
Pride
Philomena
The changeling

All have been mentioned already but all are excellent so giving them a bump

No ones mentioned the Enigma Code yet
Great film though sad as all these films are

Black Klansman is also comedic and thought provoking

Adrift is about a couple caught in a storm and cast adrift. Poignant and with a twist

Disfordarkchocolate · 08/09/2019 22:03

I'd take Titanic of your list, some very unhappy family members who disagree that it's true to life.

BikeRunSki · 08/09/2019 22:06

Catch Me If You Can - not a historical event but a real story
In the Name of the Father - about the IRA/Troubles etc on the 1980s

I loved Pride and Sully

BikeRunSki · 08/09/2019 22:07

Theory of Everything

stanski · 08/09/2019 22:09

Erin Brockovich
The Pursuit it Happiness

Just watched Everest, so I'll add that to the list too.

Sidge · 11/09/2019 22:27

Sully

Cool Runnings - I love this film! About the Jamaican bobsleigh team who actually entered the Winter Olympics without even knowing what a bobsleigh was.

I’ve just watched Mum’s List which was a tearjerker.
