Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

Just watched a nice gentle Ealing-style comedy on Talking Pictures called 'Make Mine Mink'. Terry Thomas, Hattie Jacques and a very young Billie Whitelaw star in a Robin Hood style take of mink coat thieves.

Worth a watch if you can catch it.

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 23/02/2019 21:38

Yes MrsChollySawcutt that is lovely film, saw it ages ago SmileSmileSmileSmile

FYI Black Narcissus is currently available on iPlayer - am v excited to watch it at last!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 01/03/2019 14:26

Excellent Private! Thanks for the tip off. You are in for a treat!

petal2008 · 01/03/2019 17:18

Just watched “This Happy Breed” again. Love it, great script. “It had a French stamp on it” “Disgusting” 😂

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 01/03/2019 17:46

Yes I watched and also love THIS HAPPY BREED

Now watching BLITHE SPIRIT on TP

SmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmile

PrivateIsles · 01/03/2019 19:08

Ah I love Blithe Spirit - one of my DS's favourite films as well!! Madam Arcarti (sp?!?) is a hoot!

PrivateIsles · 06/03/2019 16:08

The Ghost and Mrs Muir is on TP at this very moment, but it started at 3.10pm, which is no good to anyone right now... but it's on again in the early hours of Monday morning.

This film is a thing of beauty imo - Gene Tierney is in it, for a start, Rex Harrison is the ghostly (and somewhat hot) sea captain, not to mention George Sanders... well, set your recording devices!

PrivateIsles · 06/03/2019 16:09

petal I've had This Happy Breed recorded for so long and need to watch it (I know I saw it as a youngster, but not for years!).

A quick reminder that Brief Encounter is on ITV player for your viewing pleasure. It's hidden in the Films category.

PrivateIsles · 15/03/2019 12:15

Thanks so much for the heads up fleas.

I made some lemonade scones this morning from my NZ recipe book (given to me by my lovely Kiwi MIL) and I've just eaten 2 3 while watching Brief Encounter. Just the day for retreating from the world.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 15/03/2019 12:50

My pleasure Private, it's such a wonderful film I just had to share.

A propos of nothing in particular I wonder where all the Trevors are these days? Haven't come across one for years. They used to be ten a penny.

PrivateIsles · 15/03/2019 13:11

So true - I've seen it so many times but it's still so completely brilliant.

We went to Carnforth station (where it was filmed) a couple of years ago, and had a great time messing around in the waiting room and asking about the freshness of the Bath buns etc (between ourselves I mean). There's a nice cafe and they do a good line in souvenir tea towels as well - highly recommended all round.

Yes where are all the Trevors nowadays?! Actually our neighbour is called Trevor and he is very nice (even if he isn't Trevor Howard)!

PrivateIsles · 15/03/2019 13:24

Dolly Messiter is such a huge PITA - just the kind of annoying person who'd start talking to you on a train journey when you were just trying to look out of the window or something. She's such a realistic character.

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 21/03/2019 15:25

*WHISKEY GALORE!

Just starting on BBC2 now

HOBSON'S CHOICE just starting on TP

SmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmileSmile

PrivateIsles · 31/03/2019 23:24

Thanks Sub!! I watched The 39 Steps today - recorded, but I think it might still be on iPlayer. I decided to pull rank as it was Mother's Day so I chose our evening's viewing for a change! I think my DS and DH both enjoyed it as
well (albeit grudgingly).

There are some good films on this week, probably things people have already seen, eg Vertigo is on Film4 tomorrow, Kind Hearts and Coronets is on TP later in the week.

Also it's not an old film but might be interesting as it's about that period - Trumbo is on BBC2 on ?Thursday night I think. Has anyone ever seen this? I haven't, but I thought it might be interesting viewing for old Hollywood afficionados.

PrivateIsles · 03/04/2019 12:03

Leslie Howard was born OTD in 1893, which is just an excuse for me to post this picture (I may have posted it on here before!).

Marlon Brando and Doris Day were also born on 3rd April - happy birthday Doris! Cake

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/04/2019 19:14

I'm abroad this week so no access to TP 😔. I did manage to resurrect the old hard drive recorder though so as soon as I get back I will be scouring the schedules in hope. PrivateIsles thank you for your helpful tip offs, always welcome! 😁👍

PrivateIsles · 05/04/2019 12:21

Hope you enjoyed the foreign climes fleas. I'm sure there'll be some b&w films kicking around on your return!

Meanwhile film star birthdays today include Mr Gregory Peck (I'd been looking for an excuse to post this again...)

PrivateIsles · 05/04/2019 12:32

PS speaking of Gregory Peck, The Million Pound Note is on Film4 this afternoon (in about half an hour though!) - and To Kill A Mockingbird is on TCM later.

PrivateIsles · 06/04/2019 01:15

I ended up watching The Million Pound Note - daft, but plenty of Gregory Peck in it, so can't complain. I watched Mockingbird straight afterwards as well. I've seen it before, a couple of times, but what a fantastic film.

I read that Peck said he liked playing good guys because it was a challenge to make them interesting. Job done I think!
