Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

Schaden ah what a shame about ...Life & Death! I've recorded it to watch on Friday. I remember watching it years ago as well and I loved it then, although I can't remember much about it now - apart from David Niven standing at the bottom of a really long (heavenly) staircase!

Ah, there's a new run of YMRT, PrivateP, and very scandalous it is too! 'Fact-checking Hollywood Babylon' looks at the various sensational claims in Kenneth Anger's cult classic and essentially debunks most of them. I've just been listening to a couple and they're excellent. Karina L doesn't have much truck with Anger, I don't think.....

And Schaden , what a shame about AMOL&D. I do love it though. One of my all-time favourites but then I'm a bit of a Powell & Pressburger addict.

PrivateParkin · 06/02/2019 09:24

Thanks Halsall - I've download a couple of those but am trying to spin them out for as long as possible!

Last month though she tweeted:

This is the last episode of
@ RememberThisPod
for the time being. My contract to make new episodes is up and I am busy with other projects at the moment. I hope the podcast comes back in some form at some point. That’s all I know now, but when I have more to share, I will!

Shock Hopefully she will make more, but "other projects" also sounds intriguing! Fingers crossed.

Oh noooo, I didn't see that tweet Sad

She did have a book out, I know (about Howard Hughes's various film-star girlfriends). I might check that out at some point.

But you're right, there's a big archive of episodes and they're VERY well worth exploring....

I sort-of have to agree about A Matter of Life and Death. I loved it when I first saw it many years but now find it too cheesy and irritating. I classify films as "multi-watchers", "one-watchers" and somewhere inbetween. I'd say it's good to watch a couple of times and then loses its charm and novelty. But that's my guideline for myself iyswim. Some films I can watch 100s of times and never get bored, others are great but not forever and some are just not for me.

PrivateIsles · 07/02/2019 17:25

Hi all - I've (slightly) name changed what with this data breach business. Just in case you didn't guess it was me! Private Isles was a real person - he was Basil Rathbone's batman in WW1 and it's just such a fab name I thought I would borrow it.

Anyway. Davros I get you about films that can stand up to a re-watch (or many) and ones that can't. There was a thread on here recently about films people had watched multiple times, I don't know if you saw it? But a lot of the same films kept cropping up. Although not many oldies (apart from Christmas ones).

Ah I missed this - but the film is on iPlayer, hurrah. I can't find the pre-film prog though, but that could just be me Hmm

I looked ahead to next Saturday in case this was some kind of series on classic actors, but I can't see anything for next week, sadly. Will keep a look out though...

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 10/02/2019 12:51

This afternoon (in 10 minutes) it is MICHAEL CAINE followed by THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING on BBC2

Next Sunday - it is PETER SELLERS followed by A SHOT IN THE DARK on BBC2

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/02/2019 14:32

Woof woof, attention all film hounds!

Charade. Today (Thurs 14th February) at 16:40 on Film 4

With Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn. If you can take all that gorgeousness in one go.

holdingjhands · 14/02/2019 14:33

check

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/02/2019 15:39

And as if that weren't enough, Blythe Spirit with Rex Harrison on Saturday 23rd February- didn't catch the time, sorry, but it's on TP.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/02/2019 21:04

I have Charade on DVD fleas - my wonderful DD bought it for me for my birthday many moons ago.

Had good times today - "The Upturned Glass" on youtube (James Mason being murderous), and bad - Had videoed "Corridor of Mirrors" and was engrossed - and something went wrong and for half an hour-ish they couldn't get the film back - just had an apology on screen, so I missed a load of the meaningful bit. Will have to see if it's on again (or go on you tube again)

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 14/02/2019 22:19

What an excellent child Schaden. These are the things that make you appreciate motherhood.😁

Drookit · 15/02/2019 09:38

Wasn't Charade wonderful.
DP and I missed the first 20 mins but twas non the less an extremely enjoyable valentines watch.
Thoughts:
Cary Grant was a mere 59 at the time but possibly looking older?
Audrey was 33 wish so very much the younger woman which obviously is depressingly frequent in films but also quite a strong character.
How did the claw handed one get back from the roof?

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 15/02/2019 13:09

How did the claw handed one get back from the roof?

Glad it's not just me, Drookit, I thought I must have missed something.

It says a lot for Audrey that she managed to make some quite awful hats look elegant. I vaguely remember my DM wearing one of those pointed hats with attached scarves. I noticed that even the divine Audrey had the "where do I perch my sunglasses?" dilemma. She opted for outside the scarf, instead of inside hooked over her ears, which can't have been very secure!

Sat 3.00 - 4.45 am - The Divided Heart

Set the video.

Get a box of tissues

Make a cup of tea

Watch it when you won't be interrupted

Bawl your eyes out!

Saw this years ago - it's LOVELY!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 15/02/2019 21:49

Have just read the synopsis, Schaden, worth staying up for that is!

Drookit · 16/02/2019 09:53

Yes! the dreadful hats.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 17/02/2019 17:09

Just watched "Divided Haert" - weeping here all over again.

It's based on a true story - so sad. The real Tony/Ivan kept in touch with his German adoptive mother all of his life (and died of cancer at only 44).

What a heartbreaking situation - just no easy answers. Whatever happened, someone would be dreadfully hurt.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 17/02/2019 17:30

I don't have a recording device so missed Divided Heart Sad.

I'll be looking out for it again though.

Consoling myself with Donkeys on Ice at 6pm. Grin

PrivateIsles · 17/02/2019 20:34

Donkeys on Ice?! Grin Is that on TP?! I'm away at the moment so am hoping for all of these to be re-run. Have never seen The Divided Heart...

PrivateIsles · 17/02/2019 20:36

Oh wait - do you mean dancing on Ice fleas?!? Grin I blame the jetlag. I thought Donkeys on Ice was going to be a film in the style of The Gay Dog!! Grin

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 17/02/2019 21:00

PrivateIsles

😁😁😁

Donkeys on Ice would make compelling viewing, it’s true.

There’s quite a jolly DOI thread, do come and join!
