Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

KIND HEARTS & CORONETS TP - 5.55pm

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 06/04/2019 10:26

Million pound note is an interesting idea, there was another version of it too

That the knowledge of such a note and ownership of it has such an effect on people

PrivateIsles · 06/04/2019 13:02

Yes it was interesting - that the impression of wealth influences people so much, they don't even stop to question it before bending over backwards for this person.

I wished they'd made it contemporary (ie the 1950s) though, rather than set in the Victorian era - although that's when the book it was based on was written. Maybe the producers thought people were more gullible back then?!

But it was a bit unbelievable when Henry picked up the Countess' daughter and carried her through the streets - in Victorian London? Wouldn't that have caused a complete scandal?! Not to mention the smooching on the hotel steps!! Shock

Oh also - Joan Hickson was in it - she crops up in so many films!

PrivateIsles · 12/04/2019 17:22

Had an extremely enjoyable afternoon eating hot cross buns and watching Laura - what a good looking film that is! And I don't just mean mysterious "dame" Gene Tierney and hard-bitten detective Dana Andrews, although they certainly helped Smile

They were great at using shadows back then weren't they? Really effective as camouflage for bad guys, throwing menacing silhouettes onto rainy pavements, etc. Anyway. It's a fantastic film if anyone hasn't seen it. All striking and sinister and action-packed, and lots of great hats.

downloadmegashowstv · 15/04/2019 13:33

The wicked lady is the best movie i have watched, really very suspense movie and iam going to watch next movies on megashows.xyz/download/ in high resolution.
Thank you.

buenavides · 16/04/2019 01:01

The Godfather will be on top of my list, I love the cast and the dialogue on these film. It is one of the greatest films of all time.

ChinkChink · 21/04/2019 13:33

Talking Pictures TV has another treat for us today, Powell & Pressburger's 'I Know Where I'm Going'.

A feisty Wendy Hiller and 'Archers' regular Roger Livesey romance in the wonderful setting of Mull. Watch out for the character 'Catriona' - do we think she and Torquil have had a fling?

Enjoy.

PrivateIsles · 22/04/2019 19:36

Thanks Chink! We're away at the moment so I hope it comes around on the TP rotation again soon so I can catch it.

TP also has The Innocents tonight - or should I say in the early hours of tomorrow, 12.30am. I think this film was mentioned earlier in the thread. It's based on The Turn of the Screw, and stars Deborah Kerr
It looks extremely creepy. I definitely won't be watching it in the middle of the night, that's for sure! Shock

PrivateIsles · 28/04/2019 09:41

Talking Pics today, 2.25pm Carve Her Name With Pride

I can't wait to see this.

MaudAndOtherPoems · 28/04/2019 18:27

Without intending to, I fell off this thread months ago, but thought of you all a while back while watching A Matter Of Life And Death and then more recenly when watching Brief Encounter.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 28/04/2019 23:29

@MaudAndOtherPoems 👋👋👋

I seem not to be watching much telly at the moment, must be the nice weather and lighter nights. I keep missing films I would really like to see. I must make an effort to pop onto the thread more!

PrivateIsles · 29/04/2019 22:46

Hello Maud and all Smile

The weather turned a bit cold over the weekend here, which would have been perfect for film watching but I had loads of boring tasks to do, unfortunately. I did record Carve Her Name With Pride though, so am looking forward to watching that.

To add to my virtual pile of recordings, The Golden Salamander is on TP tomorrow (Tues) at 10.05am. I've never seen or even heard of this before I don't think, but it sounds good and stars Trevor Howard and Herbert Lom, so that in itself is enough to recommend it isn't it? Here's the description from the new TP Instagram account:

"A British archaeologist is torn between tackling a sinister crime syndicate or turning a blind eye. Trevor Howard stars as an archaeologist who has been dispatched to a small North African town to recover priceless artefacts and finds himself in deep trouble when he stumbles on a sinister smuggling racket. He keeps quiet when he discovers a gang of gun runners led by Herbert Lom, who drinks in a café run by beautiful French émigré Anna (Anouk Aimee). Won an award at the 1950 Locarno International Film Festival; based on Victor Canning's novel."

Happy viewing!

Gth1234 · 28/05/2019 17:41

Not read the whole thread.

Best old Western - Shane (1953)
Best old Horror- Night of the Demon. (1957)

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 02/06/2019 16:03

Not really a classic but still a poignant film on TP @ 5pm

HAND IN HAND

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 03/06/2019 11:13

Talking Pictures TV, 18:35 on Tues 4 June, "A Man About the House". No idea whether the film's any good but as it's centred around an inherited Italian villa we might be in for some sumptuous scenery! Smile(Or some wobbly sets Sad)

"We'll Meet Again" is on Thursday (D Day) 6 June @6pm.

cavalier · 03/06/2019 22:13

Hi
Love the old Films
Black Nacarsist with Debra Kerr is amazing !
Especially for its time ... very heavy emotionally but worth it 👍

cavalier · 03/06/2019 22:17

Sorry spelt it wrong it’s Black Narcissus

PrivateIsles · 06/06/2019 16:30

cavalier yes, there's a lot of love on here for Black Narcissus, it's a great film. One of the reasons I am so pleased I started this thread is all the recommendations, like Black Narcissus - because I'd never seen it before and so looked out for it, and ended up watching and loving it! Such a great film.

I've been distracted with tennis lately but planning to watch some old films again soon. We have just got a new TV which does not have a dvd player socket Shock as apparently "nobody uses them anymore" Hmm

There is a way you can connect it but until then my old films dvd collection is gathering dust!

SubisYodrethwhenLarping · 07/06/2019 14:20

For any of you who haven't seen

*CONSPIRACY OF HEARTS
*
yet

It is going to start on LONDON LIVE @ 2.30pm (in 10 mins time)

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 07/06/2019 17:35

In about six months' time when we finally fill up this thread I hope we can have a new one. It's a nice place to visit.

Like a National Trust property, you pop in once in a blue moon but it's always worth it.Grin

PrivateIsles · 07/06/2019 19:26

fleas I love that description! Grin

Yes I will definitely start another one when we get to the end.

PrivateIsles · 08/06/2019 13:15

There's an interesting sounding film on TP today at 2.55pm. From TP's Twitter feed:

"14:55 DUEL IN THE JUNGLE (1954) PREMIERE adventure Dana Andrews Jeanne Crain
David Farrar
In Rhodesia, the accidental death of a diamond broker raises suspicions with an American insurer..."

Sounds good. I love Dana Andrews. And isn't David Farrar the shorts-wearer from Black Narcissus?? Or am I getting my nun films muddled?!
