Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

Popping back here briefly to post this link www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/group/p07y2frq - 27 RKO classics currently on iPlayer, including Bringing Up Baby, Vivacious Lady and more!!

I've been watching loads of old favourites during the last few weeks and there are some here I've never seen... Quite excited!

I'm going to start a new thread as I think old films deserve a refresh!...

private spidey,

Love Casablanca as well. Got to see Sam's piano @ an old Hollywood exhibit once. Ah, the ending.

Have you seen In a Lonely Place w Bogie? He's the cynical writer.

The problem with Talking Pictures is they do have miserable ad breaks are a bit miserable.

tzarine I love Deborah Kerr too.

I've watched a few old favourites recently as @tobee suspected! Including Casablanca - again. It always makes me cry anyway, but this exchange really got me a couple of days ago:

Renault: Well, Rick, you're not only a sentimentalist, but you've become a patriot.
Rick: Maybe, but it seemed like a good time to start.
Renault: I think perhaps you're right.

There's a funny-sounding film on Talking Pictures today at 5.10pm: Miranda. Something about a doctor on a fishing trip being captured by a mermaid (Glynis Johns). Margaret Rutherford plays a nurse. Sounds like it might be fun.

I've noticed TCM seems to have upped it's game a bit lately. I always used to flick past it in the TV guide as it always seemed to be showing Westerns, mostly, but it seems a bit better now.

Eg recently they've shown The Lion in Winter and Twelve Angry Men so possibly worth keeping an eye on...

Hello all, it's a good day for staying home in this neck of the woods today Shock.

I'm currently watching the Rex Harrison Dr Doolittle on Film4 in very glorious Technicolor!

And I Know Where I'm Going is on Talking Pictures at 4pm. So that's my day sorted.

Returning to this lovely thread after ages away Smile

We've enjoyed quite a few things on Sony Classic Movies. They had Separate Tables on yesterday - an adaptation of Terence Rattigan's play, multi-Oscar winning. Set in a small Bournemouth hotel and slightly improbably with Rita Hayworth and Burt Lancaster among the guests Grin It was good, though, in its quiet and repressed way.

Lovely Judy Holliday in It Should Happen To You is on next week, too.

As with Talking Pictures, things seem to come round several times so if you miss them once, they'll probably be back.

I was just coming on to say about the Sony Classic Movie channel.

Dh said he saw something about one of the Channel 5 channels having classic movies ?

Rebecca
Blithe Spirit (very funny!)
The Scarlet Pimpernel (Lead actor Leslie Howard managed to portray his character as both the ludicrous dandy and the steely Sir P equally brilliantly. Tragically he was IIRC later shot down during WW2.

Whistle Down The Wind (B&W with a very young Hayley Mills, IMO brilliant)

Kind Hearts and Coronets - I seem to recall reading that some critic was advised to go and watch the very promising young actor (Alec Guinness?) in it.

Critic duly watched and said yes, he thought he was pretty good in the part.
Er, Which part?
Critic hadn’t realised that he’d played 7 parts!

Just popping on to this long-neglected thread (sorry) to say that Sony channel has launched Sony Classics here in the UK - I can access it via Sky, so I thought I'd mention it as it seems to be showing a few old favourites.

I ended up watching The Glenn Miller Story yesterday which isn't bad. The films seem to be from the 30s/40s to the 80s though, so a wide range.

Has anyone watched any good oldies lately?

Yes, it's about the aftermath of WWII and Joseph Cotten was very good. What else has he been in I wonder?

Watching vintage Christmas movies atm. Rewatched The Holly and the Ivy at the weekend.

Just bought a David Lean box set and looking forward to watching all 10 movies.

No access to talking pics sadly.

Mitsouko I feel as though I've seen that - is it something to do with WW2? It sounds really familiar. I do like Joseph Cotten, will keep an eye out for it.

Pink String and Sealing Wax is on Talking Pics today at 6.00pm, great film.

I watched it a while ago and just bits this time around @PrivateSpidey. Dh tells me it was written by the same guy who wrote And Soon the Darkness starring Pamela Franklin, who played Sandy in Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. It was made in 1970 and is set in France and is also often on TP channel. Smile

I haven't seen that tobee - did you watch?

I watched Laura again recently - apparently it's "Noir-vember" (according to some old film fans I follow on Twitter) so it seemed a good time to re-watch!

See No Evil with young Mia Farrow on Talking Pictures right now. Been on a few times, probably on again soon!

Saw it when I was quite young. Scared me quite a lot. Bit of a gothic horror but well acted and directed. Above average!

Got a second biog of Rex Harrison to read soon. He didn't do much good for women's mental health. Sad
