Following on from the recent thread about favourite actors from old films, @FatBallsAndSunflowerSeeds had the fab idea of an old movies appreciation thread... So here it is! If you like old films and actors of any kind, come and join us.

old thread

We thought we'd look out for any classic films being shown on TV, post them on this thread and then discuss them afterwards... But if you want to post about any of your favourite old films and actors at any time, that would also be fab. Basically, this is just a place to chat about old films - please come and join us!

I'm off to check the TV schedules for any potential gems coming up - I will post again with anything that looks good.

Meantime, here's James Cagney tap dancing down the stairs in Yankee Doodle Dandy - happy bank holiday everyone Smile

David Farrar is indeed the type in the unfeasible shorts in Black Narcissus, driving Kathleen Byron mad with lust.

A lovely picture on TPTV tonight 8:25 - Joseph Losey's film version of LP Hartley's 'The Go-Between', screenplay by Pinter.

'The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there.'

I love the book Chink - brilliant first couple of lines aren't they - but I've never seen the film. Will have to record it - thanks for the tip off!

Those shorts were a bit indecent for wearing around a convent!!

Short notice news flash: Spellbound is on TP today at 11.50am. Great film - you can never have too much Gregory Peck.

I love the "dream" (hallucination?) sequence

Oh dear, I dropped right off this thread so long ago that PrivateParkin has name-changed!

Just popped back to say that TP is showing a documentary about Leslie Howard at 3:40 today. It's been on before but really rather interesting.

That's if people aren't watching the tennis

PrivateIsles · 07/07/2019 00:32

Hi Halsall Smile yes I've been distracted by tennis as you know, but I'll be back to old films soon. Although having said that, I'm actually just watching Whiskey Galore! at the moment - a bit random and far too late for me these days, but I'm wide awake so might as well put it to good use!

Ugh, sorry I don't know what happened to my paragraphs in that last post - I did put them in, I'm sure!

Can I just pop in and say that The Red Shoes (1948) is on this Saturday afternoon on BBC2. One of my all-time favourite films! Very beautifully shot and quite dreamlike, especially the ballet sequences.

PrivateIsles · 01/08/2019 19:04

Thanks Jemima yes it's a beautiful film. I only saw it for the first time a few months ago thanks to a recommendation on this thread.

My film-viewing has been annoyingly curtailed by various things going on recently (ie everyday life Hmm). I need to block some time out for viewing! I've still got Carve Her Name with Pride to watch.

I noticed when I was at the cinema with my DS not long ago that Kind Hearts and Coronets is having a big screen re-release - this was at Vue, not sure if it's just there or at others as well.

It's probably been and gone now but thought I'd mention it.

Popped on here (not been here for a bit)! to say I streamed Strangers on a Train last week in the hot weather. It suited a humid night. It's an old favourite of mine and I still enjoy it. Plus Pat Hitchcock has a small role in it and she's great! Smile

Watched it on my own. Excellent!

Hi tobee ah there's nothing better than watching an old film on your own (or with a fellow appreciator) is there? That sounds excellent.

I've not been over here myself for a while, with pesky real life, tennis and far too many superhero films distracting me. (Hence the name change.)

I haven't watched an old film for a while because of all this (ok, I might have squeezed in a couple of Basil Rathbone Sherlocks Smile) but...
Blithe Spirit is on Talking Pics today at 4.30pm and I have the day off!

Yes indeed, brilliant stuff. Speaking of, The Ladykillers is on Film4 today.

The Hound of the Baskervilles - the classic with Basil Rathbone/Nigel Bruce ("Oh Watson! The needle!" How did that get past the censors?!) is on TCM at lunchtime (ish).

Richard Greene, who plays Sir Henry Baskerville, was given top billing, I don't know what became of him though? I can't think of anything else he's been in. He's good in Hound though.

Then at 6.25 (I think) on TP, David Lean's Summertime is on. Fab film which I've gone on about many times before but Katharine Hepburn, Rossano Brazzi and Venice is a pretty unbeatable combination IMHO.

Oh The Ladykillers! "Nobody touches Mrs Lopsided" was only going through my head last night! Grin

Report
PrivateSpidey · 17/09/2019 13:13

Grin classic!!

I've just realised Richard Greene was Robin Hood in the TV series Shock

And apparently the "needle" line was cut from the cinema version of the Hound, but reinstated years later when it was re-run in cinemas.

I should probably do my research before posting eh, not the other way around!

A woman of excellent taste tobee!!

After i posted that, I listened to the You Must Remember This episode about Monty and Liz Taylor - I don't think I'd ever heard that one before. Well worth a listen, it's about their relationship/friendship and also about his life and awful car accident/death Sad.

So many tragic tales in old Hollywood - sometimes I prefer to just focus on the films.

Has anyone seen Judy yet? I haven't, although I was/am planning to, but not sure if I'm in the right frame of mind tbh.

Not seen Judy yet. Saw Singin in the Rain in the cinema last Friday night! Grin

I Know Where I'm Going late night tonight on Talking Pictures. One of my very favourites 😍

My mum often talks to me about Liz and Montgomery!

Got a second biog of Rex Harrison to read soon. He didn't do much good for women's mental health. Sad

See No Evil with young Mia Farrow on Talking Pictures right now. Been on a few times, probably on again soon!

Saw it when I was quite young. Scared me quite a lot. Bit of a gothic horror but well acted and directed. Above average!
