I've just watched Before Sunrise & Before Sunset. Both highly rated and well regarded. I didn't enjoy either of them, especially Before Sunset. It was basically two quite uninteresting characters talking to each other for the duration of the film, and I didn't even like the characters either!

Tell me some of the highly rated / regarded films that you think are crap?

OP posts:

The Blair Witch Project - the biggest load of dull and uninteresting twaddle I've ever seen!

keeprunninguphill · 11/01/2016 19:54

Back to the future and
Black Swan
Both dreadful IMO

FrancesHB · 11/01/2016 21:01

YES! to

Dirty Dancing. Pile o shite.
The Theory of Everything. Blah.

I loved Eternal Sunshine and Lost In Translation though. And Carol was ACE.

Le Dîner de Cons

Pootle40 · 11/01/2016 21:52

Wow!!! I love how everyone is so different. The first series of True Detective was one of the best pieces of TV I've ever seen IMHO!

Also love The English Patient, Shawshank Redemption and Gravity.

However Skyfall bored me to tears.

FrancesHB · 11/01/2016 21:55

Oh I remembered one.

Dogma. I was completely repulsed by it and had to switch it off after 45 minutes as I couldn't bear a moment more, but friends tell me it's great, clever, so funny etc.

Tryingtojoinin · 11/01/2016 21:55

Love Actually.

I rest my case.

Peppapogstillonaloop · 11/01/2016 22:03

Valentine's Day/New Years eve/any of those awful ensemble movies god they are painful..

serin · 11/01/2016 22:46

Thought "It's a wonderful life" was awful. Watched it a second time to check and fell asleep.

Worst ever "Marley and Me". We actually left the cinema.

Kitsmummy · 11/01/2016 22:57

The Hateful Eight. Watched it tonight...too slow to start, too long and just not good IMHO.

TheNumberfaker · 11/01/2016 23:03

There will be Blood. Yawn...
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Huh?

Worst ever film was surely Diana. Twaddle! ... And she didn't even look like her! Marley and Me was pretty dire too though.
I disagree with a lot of pp about Gladiator, Shawshank, English Patient, Dogma, Theory of Everything.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/01/2016 00:35

Traffic with that Mexican Brad Pitt who won an Oscar.
Utter shite, boring as hell.
I should aquire it though, would probably cure my insomnia pretty damn quick!
Grin

Also I didn't enjoy Casablanca.
And despite loving the book I found the film version of Catch 22 disappointing. It is nowhere near able to give back the fine tuned humour and brilliance of the book.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/01/2016 00:47

Just read back, so many films I love got slated

But I have to agree with Eternal Sunshine and Soldier Tinker wanker crap. Both utter rubbish.

And what is up with Being John Malkovich?! He is my favourite actor, the man can do anything and John Cusack is also brilliant but that film is just horrible and so weird.

Should anyone of you ever be able to watch this Hungarian film called Control - do it. It's dark, but deep and makes you analyze yourself. I liked it a lot

ComposHatComesBack · 12/01/2016 02:28

American Beauty - multiple oscar winning film - but utter crap. Kevin Spacey's character is a total perv and a whiny adult baby.

Spectre opened to rave views but was unwatchable. (I add that I am not an action film fan, but my wife made me go)

Pulp Fiction - not half as clever or witty as it thinks it is. Slick and superficial. Jackie Brown is a far better film.

Gangs of New York - over long and incredibly boring.

The Big Lebowski - some really funny scenes, but the plot is all over the place. Both 'The man who wasn't there' and 'Fargo' work better as films.

Baconyum · 12/01/2016 03:02

Shawshank
It's a wonderful life
Big lebowski
Heat

All are films which in theory should have been right up my street hate them!

In contrast as a non romcom fan I love dirty dancing and silver linings playbook and dogma is in my top 3.

Jux · 12/01/2016 05:35

LOTR. Dreadful. All unnecessary long lingering shots so we can see no emotion whatsoever from the actor's face and gain no valuable insight into the nature of their thoughts motivations if they have any beyong the paycheck exactly how beautiful/handsome they are. Or not.

Same with The Hobbit. Who thought it was a good idea to stretch out an ordinary sized book into 3 loooooooooooong films? Don't do it again!

Cerseirys · 12/01/2016 06:38

Oh my god, Lost in Translation, so so dull and ScarJo's character was so annoying!

TheDowagerCuntess · 12/01/2016 06:49

I freaking love Before Sunrise / Sunset. The first one came out just as I was about to go overseas, to Europe, it was before Facebook and mobile phones, and it just rang so true for me. I was exactly the same age as them.

Also love Shawshank and Pulp Fiction.

LOTR guaranteed to send me straight to sleep.

KERALA1 · 12/01/2016 06:56

Tinker tailor soldier spy - a lot of men in grey suits talking. Would have walked out of cinema but dh thought was good

Royal tenebaums stupid pretentious rubbish but critics thought marvellous

BabyGanoush · 12/01/2016 06:59

Dowager, yes it was very much of the time. Things have changed so much.

Fadingmemory · 12/01/2016 07:19

Joy. The film gave me none.

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 12/01/2016 07:38

Baconyum

I agree that Heat was frankly shite, but it was still worth watching for the unexpected last scene that was just wonderful and beautifully done.

Justluvshopping · 12/01/2016 07:39

Anything by Tarantino
Any Bond movie
The Hobbit - walked out of the theatre and said to dh "well there's three hours of my life I'll never get back", the woman behind me almost had an asthma attack laughing

shovetheholly · 12/01/2016 09:22

I HATE all of the following (popular) movies:

Shawshank Redemption - pass the sick bucket!
All the Lord of the Rings movies
Schindler's List
Forrest Gump
The Matrix
Silence of the Lambs
(Fucking) Amelie
Leon
Saving Private Ryan
Back to the Future
Gladiator
The Dark Knight Rises/Batman Begins
Finding Nemo
The Incredibles
Braveheart
Requiem for A Dream

I love anything Tarantino, though.
