I've just watched Before Sunrise & Before Sunset. Both highly rated and well regarded. I didn't enjoy either of them, especially Before Sunset. It was basically two quite uninteresting characters talking to each other for the duration of the film, and I didn't even like the characters either!

Tell me some of the highly rated / regarded films that you think are crap?

AI sucked, yes. But mostly, IMO, because you could pretty much see where Stanley Kubrick left off and Stephen Spielberg took over - just no comparison. The ending was crap.

BlueSmarties76 · 11/01/2016 13:32

Yes, black swan was another meh film.

Yy to Black Swan. And Woody Allen films - I want to scream 'STFU!' in every single one. They talk too fucking much.

The Devil Wears Prada
Up in the Air (Clooney was actually nominated for Academy Award Best Oscar for this and I don't know why)
Also the Martian is ok-ish but not of the calibre that you would assume considering its award nominations and awards
The Theory of Everything - beautifully acted by Redmayne which is what saves it, but in terms of storytelling this could have been a BBC TV 'movie'

Agree with the English Patient – ponderous tosh – but love a lot of these, especially Donnie Darko, In Bruges, Lost in Translation and the Before Sunrise/Sunset films.

I thought 12 Years A Slave was utterly dull and Chiwitel Edjofor and Michael Bendfaster not good at all. I know that's controversial.

Tarantino needs someone to sit him down and say, 'Mate, change the record. And make them a bit less long while you're at it.'

Terence Davies are sickly, cloying and underwhelming, like a big box of shit chocolate like Milk Tray.

I also LOATHE Paul Thomas Anderson (There Will Be Tears of Boredom Blood et al) and Silver Linings fucking Playbook.

JustDanceAddict · 11/01/2016 15:51

I hate Mrs Brown's Boys. I'd never see a film of it, I Can't even bear the series.
I loved Pulp Fiction, but not keen on other Tarantino. Never really got into Breaking Bad - DH loved it.
Hate any Tolkien - Bored of the Rings leaves me cold.
Life of Pi book much better than film, although film was very cleverly done.
No film is better than book with exception of Silence of the Lambs.

Nessie100 · 11/01/2016 15:51

Shutter Island!!!!!

Pity they didnt shut the bloody door on it before some muppet decided to make it. Read the reviews, heard the fab rating. Watched the first few seconds, figured out the ending, and just pretty much wanted to slit my wrists rather than watch it.

I did watch it though, the whole way to the end .......... And wanted to slit my wrists even more Sad!

romany4 · 11/01/2016 15:53

I watched Slow West last night because I love Michael Fassbender. What a waste of time. Bored sh*tless

Walkthroughthefire · 11/01/2016 16:03

Avatar is the worst film ever made and so over hyped.

OTheHugeManatee · 11/01/2016 16:12

It's A Wonderful Life. Those awful, hyperactive, shouty people.

I thought Citizen Kane was a bit blah too.

I can't physically understand the appeal of Mrs Brown's Boys. It's like it's made for teenagers. An old lady swearing and being un-ladylike, is that really still hilarious in 2016?

MIL is Liverpool Irish Catholic and about the age of the fictional Mrs Brown. She thinks it's hilarious. Grin

ChristmasCabbage · 11/01/2016 16:13

OnlyLovers Milk Tray are the best chocolates!! Angry

Heatherjayne1972 · 11/01/2016 16:13

The matrix utter tripe

justonemorethread · 11/01/2016 16:14

Titanic!
I seemed to be the only person in the cinema not moved to tears and not gushing about it on the way out!

Also 7even. Was too disinterested to try and follow it.
But at least it used to be worth taking a chance, cinema is so expensive now!

Madbengalmum · 11/01/2016 16:15

The matrix, the da vinci code. Crap.

ChristmasCabbage · 11/01/2016 16:17

OTheHuge My FIL loves it as well- English, 60, from the West Country Confused

ChristmasCabbage · 11/01/2016 16:17

I don't really understand what The Matrix is all about TBH

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 11/01/2016 16:19

Anything my brother with a BA in Film recommends. Guaranteed to be slow, pretentious and often black and white.

Preferably subtitled too I assume? Wink

There are lots of famous films which I have either never seen or am completely underwhelmed by. Much to DH's disgust (huge film fan). I'm sure DH could list all of the ones he's bewildered by me not liking, but I can only bring to mind;

Star Wars (all 8 "episodes")
Star Trek
The Godfather (all parts)
Tombstone (I fell asleep in the cinema it was so dull)
Indiana Jones (all varieties)
Harry Potter (all varieties)

To be honest, I'm not a fan of action or sci-fi in general.

cosytoaster · 11/01/2016 16:19

I second It's a Wonderful Life...thought I must be the only person in the world that thought it was crap - it's so over-hyped at Xmas.

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 11/01/2016 16:20

Oh, but I love Les Mis!

AttilaTheMeerkat · 11/01/2016 16:20

The Descendants
Shawshank Redemption
Life of Pi

ErgonomicallyUnsound · 11/01/2016 16:20

Godfather films - yawn central

OnlyLovers · 11/01/2016 16:20

I have to respectfully disagree, Cabbage. Grin But anyway, think of the most sickly and disappointing chocolates you can and you have the Terence Davies Effect.

girlandboy · 11/01/2016 16:26

JustDanceAddict Forrest Gump the movie is miles better than the book, which was crap.

But I loved The Shawshank Redemption! That has to be one of my favourite films! Also loved The Grand Budapest Hotel, which I thought was a very clever film.

But I hated Les Mis and Moulin Rouge. Ugh.
