So, we are all being v good on the other three but I am desperate to discuss it.
So, why do we think Luke had such a teeny role (not even a flashback) and was anyone else a bit disappointed by the lack of light sabre action?

Kylo Ten as a thirty year old doesn't work for me - he was vaguely interesting as a stroppy teenager but as an emotionally stunted thirty something? Hmm.

I always assumed he was much younger too. I would have said early 20s. He's a bit rubbish if he's 30 andhes still acting like a stroppy teenager with little control over the force!

rosebiggs · 03/01/2016 14:06

Kylo is very much like Anakin when he became Darth Vadar. I don't know how old Anakin was then, but perhaps Kylo is supposed to be a similar age and that's why he identifies so strongly with him?

FattyNinjaOwl · 03/01/2016 14:21

trills he was apparently born within a year afterwards so han and Leia were already at it like rabbits Grin

Scone1nSixtySeconds · 03/01/2016 14:56

trills I love that Kylo Ren Twitter feed! Grin

I had a wee thread about this and some interesting theories came up. Mine first:

Luke is at the original Jedi temple learning the secret of immortality. It's been heavily mentioned through all films from jinn to the end of Rotj. Vader will return possibly as a akin to either redeem or destroy kylo.

Rey is actually baser reincarnated. Thus the power and the connection but no one being able to place her.

Kylo is a plant and is working for the rebellion. This the conflict. He knows he has to kill Han to prove himself and so does Han.

Rey is Han and leias daughter. She was training at the academy and they think she was killed with the other younglings. But Luke (or possibly kylo??) hid her on jakku. Mvs possibly knew and was to look over her from a distance. Luke then took himself off so no one would guess that his neice was alive. Thus Han and leia "knowing" or connecting with her - but they think their own child is dead so haven't put two and two together.

Personally I'm convinced vader is coming back as he was the chosen one and an still fulfil his destiny to balance the force. I think that the entire series is actually about vaders story arc and all the immortality talk has been leading up to it through all films.

SouthWestmom · 03/01/2016 15:11

Actually I still have one question and your theory about someone watching Rae has reminded me.

Who is the old man talking to Po at the very start?

RJnomore1 · 03/01/2016 15:38

I've only seen the film once but isn't that max von sidow?

FattyNinjaOwl · 03/01/2016 16:03

The old man is lor San tekka. Just Google that name and it will give you the story.

SouthWestmom · 03/01/2016 17:35

Thank you Fatty - it's been bugging me for ages

Going back to the point about Ren and the 'space nazis' (I really like that!!!), if you remember in the original Star Wars, vader seemed to be in a similar position with the generals at the time and in some respects, they seemed to have the power, not vader.

That's what we are seeing with Ren and General Hux.

I guess the Emperor/Snoke need the bureaucrats to keep the empire running as there is no way a handful of Jedi could police an empire that size.

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 03/01/2016 20:41

I loved it but it was so similar to episode 4, even down to the bar and the musicians.
I took it as showing how things are cyclical and history repeats itself.
It was a great film but I kind of feel sad now. A lifetime passes so quickly.

HanSolo · 03/01/2016 21:49

RJ- I fear parts of your post were eaten by autocorrect- Rey is baser reincarnated? Vader?

'jinn' film?

MVS? Maz (Kanata)?

RJnomore1 · 03/01/2016 22:05

Vader yes - you have no idea how many edging autocorrects my phone has for vader.'

Jinn - the Liam neeson character was that not his name?

Mvs - max von sidow

Ah, thank you!

Exalted · 04/01/2016 16:02

Ahhh, I was bitterly disappointed by this iteration of star wars. I left the movie theatre with an overwhelming feeling of emptiness... It was not so much the waste of money that perturbed me, but rather, the wasted two hours of my life that I can never reclaim.

I loved it - it was my first Star Wars film at the cinema and I thought Rey and Finn felt very normal and able to carry the weight of the film comfortably.
I did feel very worried for Carrie Fisher, especially the scenes with Harrison Ford where everything was shot over each other's shoulders with the back of someone else's head in shot. It made me concerned that she physically wasn't able to stand around while Harrison was shooting his bits.

TheWoodenSpoonOfMischief · 04/01/2016 17:30

Did anyone else (probably those of us who watched the first one) feel the sadness I felt?
I thought the whole film had an undertone of of sadness around how tragic Han, Leia and Luke's lives had turned out.
Their happiness at the end of Return of the Jedi seems so short lived. Not just their personal happiness but the happiness at defeating the Empire and bringing peace to the galaxy.

HanSolo · 04/01/2016 17:50

perspicacia- the scene near the end when they're all waving Rey off to find Luke, she looked as though she was really struggling to stand Sad Her DD was standing very close behind her, seemingly 'just in case'.

BlueChampagne · 05/01/2016 12:45

Bit too Episode IV for me but still enjoyed it. I'm with the 'Rey is Luke's daughter' crowd; they like to keep it in the family. Liked Finn as the Good Stormtrooper.

Kylo Ren definitely has the hots for Rey; reckon he'll be seduced by the Light in the end. Did like it when the 2 stormtroopers turned round and walked off when he was throwing a hissy fit!

How old are Rey and Ren/Ben supposed to be? Late teens, early 20s? Looks like Han and Leia delayed becoming parents!

BlueChampagne · 05/01/2016 12:46

perspicacia "Harrison shooting his bits" nearly made me choke on my lunch Grin

PerspicaciaTick · 05/01/2016 15:03

Now, now Blue

batshitlady · 05/01/2016 16:48

I enjoyed the film for the most part, but I felt the climatic ending was a bit disappointing and seemed a little bit rushed and a bit hard to believe.

"There must be a way we can destroy this unfeasibly massive planet? - There's always a way come on - Yes here's a spot - drop bombs here and kerpow!! - Yay that's that then, another Death Star bites the dust...

Rey didn't have any training or knowledge of the force yet outfights and out 'forces' the evil empires prodigy chap. Come on! She didn't have any character development either. Unlike the Empire Strikes back where Luke Skywalker tries to do too much too soon, gets cut down to size and learns deep lessons.

Also I thought Luke should have turned up earlier and effected the outcome / tipped the balance in favour of the republic towards the end. That would have bought it to a bit of a better crescendo.
