So, we are all being v good on the other three but I am desperate to discuss it.
So, why do we think Luke had such a teeny role (not even a flashback) and was anyone else a bit disappointed by the lack of light sabre action?

Re women it was great in many ways but little interaction between women characters and only just passed the bechdel test, because of conversations about The Force!

Will await analysis of women's "airtime".

I love the reversal, in Kylo Ren, to what we've seen previously. He's not really a good egg who has been seduced by the Dark Side, he's actively sought it out. He's desperate to emulate Darth Vader and is constantly fighting a pull towards the Light. He's clearly very powerful but lacks control, and he knows it.

I really can't wait to see where his story goes. I'd love for him to have a proper (rather than last minute, a la Darth Vader) redemption but then if there's anything I love it's a bad-guy-comes-good-scenario. Probably as a result of watching RotJ so many times during my formative years Grin

Duckdeamon · 22/12/2015 18:31

I had a different reaction trionic and just wanted vader to die! He didn't deserve a nice afterlife with his mates and replaced in later versions with hayden thingAmy as his younger more handsome self!

Wonder how Han and Leia fucked up as parents?

I wonder if rey will turn to the Dark Side too: plenty of bad things for her to get angry about. when she used the force to fight him was it the dark or light?

They ended adam driver's role in Girls well: he was great in that as an awful boyfriend.

mizu · 22/12/2015 20:06

Have just come back from watching it. I loved it.

My DH bought the 3 originals and we watched them all yesterday and this morning with DDs.

All went to watch it this afternoon. I was gutted about Han, feeling a bit teary still but as someone has mentioned, I reckon he maybe only signed up for one film.

I saw Empire strikes back at the cinema, think I was 6 or 7 and have loved Harrison Ford ever since, he was my first crush and I still couldn't take my eyes off him today Grin

I loved all the women in it, loved Carrie Fisher, agree that I wanted more of the back story of what happened with her and Han, loved the scenes between them.

I also loved that my girls of 9 and 11 loved it and chatted about it all the way home asking lots of what ifs and what next!

gabsdot · 22/12/2015 21:47

I loved it. I loved Seeing Han solo again. He was 40 years older but just the same Han. Leia was showing her age a bit more.
I thought the bit at the end with the big Luke Reveal was amazing and I was so excited to see how great the Skillig islands looked. There was loads of fuss and bother about them filming there and it was all so secret. They had a really big part in the end.
I knew they'd kill off Han. The film makers were probably worried that Harrison Ford would get too old or die before the next film is made. He had a great death scene which he totally deserved.
I loved the new characters, Rey and Finn and General Hux was great. I loved the way Gleeson played him slightly camp and a bit crazy. It was a great performance.
All in all a great film. I'm looking forward to seeing it again.

HermioneWeasley · 22/12/2015 22:01

The whole Luke thing was baffling

  • if he didn't want to be found, why leave a treasure hunt of map pieces leading to an easily found location
  • does he spend all day looking out over the water?
  • why he is dressed like a Jedi if he's renounced it all.

When he took his mask off, I really wanted Ren to speak like "squeaky voiced boy" from the Simpsons.

Bambambini · 22/12/2015 23:38

Was fab, just seen it. It think the fact it is pared down and echoes the first movie so much is what made it. Yes, it was a bit unoriginal in how much it mirrored ep iv - but I think that is what folk want and have been waiting for.

Daisy Riley was great, all the cast were. I felt a bit unsure with Han, Leia and Luke returning so much older but it was OK as it all seemed to familiar and recognisable.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/12/2015 00:37

Just seen it, and adored it. It could have gone so horribly wrong, but they got so much right.

(Obligatory para to mute spoilers.)

The new cast were great. I wasn't sure I would care about them, but I so, so did. I loved the callbacks to the original, and I loved the way Rey lived in the wreckage of an ATAT, and earned her living salvaging from the last time this went down.

And I recognised Greenham Common, and Puzzlewood! I think that little patch of the Forest of Dean has done greater service to Sci-Fi and fantasy film than practically any other location on this planet or any other.

HanSolo · 23/12/2015 01:10

Great questions, hermione! Grin

MaryPoppinsPenguins · 23/12/2015 01:32

I assumed Phasma was dead? Isn't she?

tribpot · 23/12/2015 07:35

Well given it was Rey (the next Jedi) who found him, maybe the whole thing was a quest to prove her Jedi-ness, a bit like when Yoda made Luke do acrobatics in a swamp. Or actually the map was meant to be in Leia's custody so she could reach him if she needed to?

Has he renounced the Force? Or has he gone off on a mystical spiritual journey of grief after all his apprentices were killed? I don't think he spends all day looking out at the sea, he was probably so knackered from climbing all those steps that he couldn't move. That's why he doesn't speak - out of breath.

He seemed a normal guy, bit too much so, given his background. Why was he horrified at having to commit stormtrooper atrocities when none of the others seemed to have a problem with it? Not sure I'm explaining this very well

No, I know exactly what you mean. That's how I felt. If he'd been raised from being a child to be a killing machine why did he suddenly decide 'nope, that's not for me actually, I'm off.' That said, I liked his character and the idea of an ex-stormtrooper.

I hadn't read any of the reviews and after 'The Phantom Menace' I wasn't really expecting much from 'The Force Awakens'. But I actually got goosebumps when the Millenium Falcon took flight on the big screen again.

tribpot · 23/12/2015 21:17

It seemed like this was his first battle, so things must have been very quiet in the First Wotsit for years, but even so, I would like to think there is a reason his training failed, like the Resistance have finally realised there are other ways to attack the Empire than just with a direct assault.

FadedRed · 23/12/2015 21:34

Saw the film yesterday and thought it was good, 100x better than than 1, 2 & 3, but old enough to have seen the originals at the cinema first time around and being totally awestruck at them, so this new one is only ever going to be 4th best IMO.
However......
As the film opened and the 'a long time ago etc..' scrolled up the screen, when it said that Luke has disappeared and no one knew his whereabouts, my first thought was surely Leia would know, the Force and all that?

Is Rey Luke's daughter (they do seem very careless with their children)?
Where did the uber baddie holograph person come from?

Ways Kylo Ren's aimilarity to a young Severus Snape just an unfortunate coincidence? And Rey's to Katniss Everdeen? Or is it just me?

After winning the rebellion in ROTJ, how did it all go so horribly wrong again?
Or do we just have to wait and see?

Apologies if these questions have been asked further up the thread, but page one will not load properly on my iPad, so I've come in half way through.

RomComPhooey · 23/12/2015 22:01

they do seem very careless with their children

Hahaha. So true.

Girlwhowearsglasses · 23/12/2015 22:02

I think the flashback/dream sequence when Rey touches Luke's Lightsaber the first time is absolutely pivotal but I didn't 'catch' it all. I think it explains her heritage and why she is Luke's daughter and why she was left as a child.

Can anyone detail it? There were around six short sequences - some from her child/babyhood.

I think the big question is who is Rey's DM????

I was Briliant and I've never seen landscapes shown in such amazing perspective with small figures in proportion using CGI before.

One scene was Kylo and the Knights of Ren
One is mini-Rey being left with Unkar Plott on Jakku
Wasn't one Luke with his prosthetic hand on BB-8?

Bambambini · 24/12/2015 00:12

I had no idea that Finn was the young lead from Attack The Block - I was very impressed with him in that. His American accent totally threw me off.

nooka · 24/12/2015 00:42

We went to see it last week and were very surprised that it was quite so good. My dh was convinced it wouldn't really feel like Star Wars, although we were both sure it couldn't be as bad as the prequels!

According to dh (big Star Wars fan) both Lawrence Kasdan and Harrison Ford thought that Han should have died in the Return of the Jedi, so he wasn't at all surprised at the death scene, and thought it was really well done.

I found I didn't really relate to Leia much, I thought she looked very different, but then I've watched Harrison Ford grow up, so him being old wasn't much of a shock. dh thought Luke looked fabulous at the end, and great to have meeting him as the cliff hanger (dh is convinced Luke is or has gone bad).

sooperdooper · 24/12/2015 08:03

I enjoyed it and loved the new droid and found it funny but overall the storyline was way too close to the original film, death star, droid holding the key, even the bar they go to - it's one thing to echo themes but not just recreate entirely!

I don't see how Ray could possibly be a daughter of Han and Leia since they were both concerned about bringing back their son and a daughter never gets mentioned. A daughter left abandoned and forgotten about makes no sense at all

I didn't think Kylo Ren was intimidating or frightening in any way, I found him a disappointment as a baddie and lacking in depth or character in general. Him killing Han was again too much of a recreation of what had gone before.

What's the Supreme Being all about? It's been a few years since I've seen the original films but I remember nothing about him at all previously?!

Why were they looking for Luke anyway? Or, if he was hiding, why did he send a map? Why didn't Leia go to find him too?
