So, we are all being v good on the other three but I am desperate to discuss it.
So, why do we think Luke had such a teeny role (not even a flashback) and was anyone else a bit disappointed by the lack of light sabre action?

Just seen it again Grin and watched the calling lightsaber scene very carefully - the ship was the freighter thing that Han and Chewie are using as smugglers when we meet them again.

I also thought that during that final scene Luke looked more perturbed by seeing his old saber than his potential offspring. Hmm

FartyTette · 30/12/2015 20:23

Yes Quietbatperson, I think your DH is right - the holoprojection bought The Wizard of Oz to mind.

Snope is a crap name - someone on Twitter has likened it to a minor Harry Potter character, although I think it sounds a bit Dickensian myself.

starry0ne · 30/12/2015 20:26

Can I ask because it is a very long time since I saw what has happened to Yoda?

Why shouldn't Kylo Ren be eligible for redemption, even though he did kill his father?

Darth Vader was redeemed, despite having killed the whole planet of Alderaan, and whoever the mass of 'younglings' were in the prequels (can't remember).

NuggetofPurestGreen · 30/12/2015 20:53

They were the trainee Jedis. He killed Obi Wan too and all them lads that kidnapped his mother.

HappyCria · 30/12/2015 21:30

I thought all stormtroopers were clones and that was why Finn was just a number with no name. So I don't think he will have any significant parents.

I also thought being celibate was part of being a good Jedi and not letting strong emotions such as love get in the way and potentially lead you to the dark side . I saw Anakins love for padme being a major contributing factor that turned him to the dark side to protect her.

I think Luke constantly tries to be everything his father was not so I just don't think he would father a child.

HanSolo · 30/12/2015 21:39

I think it's Snoke rather than Snope. (I heard it as Snopes first time through)

HappyCria originally the troopers were clones. But these troopers are taken from their families when young.

I though that Ray is Luke child and at the end Luke was standing in front of a grave presumably Ray mothers.

Kylo also mention about the island Ray thought about before she went to sleep.

I also thought Fin was/is Landro child.

regenerationfez · 30/12/2015 23:46

I watched it a second time with my DS. When Rey was left as a child, did she look up the the millennium falcon flying away? It doesn't make sense that Han and Leia would dump their daughter though, unless Kylo\Ben was a teenager but she was a child. But I thought Kylo and Rey as adults were roughly a similar age. I still think she's Luke's child. Wasn't there a gap between the end of Empire and him training the new Jedi? Maybe he didn't quite stick to the Jedi rules....

Asheth · 31/12/2015 00:24

The problem I have with her being Luke or Leia's child is why would they dump her on that hostile planet to scavenge?

Luke and Leia were sent away to protect them, but were raised by loving families - Leia by the Organas and Luke by his step uncle. If Luke or Leia needed to hide on of their children surely they'd find a family for them.

Do we know how old the characters are? Rey could be quite young. I always thought Padme was in her 20s in the first film and could never work out how she ended up with whiny school boy Anakin, then I read somewhere that she was only 14!

rosebiggs · 31/12/2015 01:10

Perhaps Luke didn't know he had a child.
Could leia have left her?
I cant see Luke abandoning his child, but leia is the leader of the resistance and may have been willing to make the sacrifice. Why did leia hug Rae at the end?

rosebiggs · 31/12/2015 01:12

Hans solo didn't know who Rae was though.

regenerationfez · 31/12/2015 08:26

Wasn't Padme much older than Anakin? She was 14 in the first film but he can't have been more than 7. I might have misremembered because they were so dull .

I think it's more plausible that Luke got Reys mother up the duff and didn't know, and her family abandoned her because they were scared of the power of the force or something that's why she was a scavenger. Maybe it wasn't the millennium falcon that took off.

Asheth · 31/12/2015 09:28

I think Anakin was 9 in the first film, so a 5 year age gap.

In the flashback don't we see Rey being left by her father? Can't be Han, as he would have reacted more to her. How much were Han and Leia separated? Could she be Leia's and some mystery man? Snoke? Could explain how the baddie got to Kylo if he was a sort of step father figure!

Mrsfrumble · 01/01/2016 03:52

I saw it last night and really enjoyed it.

I loved BenRen most of all. I found the masked Kylo Ren really scary (far more so than Darth Vader), but then he takes it off, and there's this vulnerable, gawky, not quite ugly and not quite handsome boy-man. Maybe it's just because my own small son is named Ben! When Han calls out to him on the bridge it brought it home to me that he was once his and Leia's little boy and I want him to be redeemed eventually because of that.

Poor old Leia's had a shitty life, hasn't she? It would be nice for her to get her son back.

NotDavidTennant · 01/01/2016 12:24

Saw it last night.

Loved the new characters. Loved the visual style of the film which was much more in keeping with the original trilogy rather than the endless CGI of the prequels.

Wasn't over-enamoured with the plot though. Too many elements lifted almost wholesale from previous films, and too many coincidences used to drive the plot (e.g. Luke's light sabre being in some random bar that Han just happened to take them to; R2D2 coming to life at just the right time and happening to have the entire map apart from the one little bit that they already had).

LollipopViolet · 01/01/2016 19:45

Right, one thing I do not understand: WHY in the name of the Force do they insist on continuing with the Death Star idea?! I mean, three (I think?) have been blown to bits, surely they must've thought at some point, "Hmm, this isn't working. Let's try something else." Or did that memo not get passed along?

chanie44 · 01/01/2016 20:13

Lolli I said to OH, 'why do they keep building Death Stars with weak spots'

rosebiggs · 01/01/2016 20:33

They should build a massive lego death star. No-one would touch it.

LollipopViolet · 01/01/2016 20:34

Someone would step on it. In the dark. In bare feet.

rosebiggs · 01/01/2016 21:02

Can you imagine Kylo Ren's tantrum?

HanSolo · 01/01/2016 21:59

Haha- lollipop- that's what my brother said!
