So, we are all being v good on the other three but I am desperate to discuss it.
So, why do we think Luke had such a teeny role (not even a flashback) and was anyone else a bit disappointed by the lack of light sabre action?

batshitlady I think you have a point about Rey's development. Maybe it's supposed to show that BenRen is actually a bit rubbish and needs lots more training.

DH keeps calling First Order "New Order", which makes me giggle and the DSs despair ... "Dad, you've only just seen the film; you can't have forgotten already!"

batshitlady · 06/01/2016 17:20

That comes with age eh? Who's BenRen btw?

MitzyLeFrouf · 06/01/2016 17:48

I fell asleep for a good 20 mins in the middle. Woken by an outraged nudge in the ribs.

I wasn't bored as such, just suffering from a bit of Crimbo fatigue.

There is an interesting theory out there about Rey being Obi Wan's granddaughter. I quite like it:
www.huffingtonpost.com/ben-ostrower/rey-is-obi-wan-kenobis-granddaughter_b_8911656.html

First I was sure she had to be Han and Leia's daughter, but wasn't quite sure how could it be that they didn't mention her or remember her even if they thought she died (because someone took her to that planet and hid her to protect her).

Then, after seeing the movie for a second time I thought she has to be Luke's daughter then.

But she could actually be related to Obi Wan Kenobi.

BlueChampagne · 07/01/2016 12:40

BenRen = Kylo Ren aka Ben

batshitlady · 07/01/2016 12:50

Thanks Blue. Yes that's a possibility I s'pose. But Ren wouldn't have got to the top of the baddie food chain, leading garrisons, making critical decisions and heading the search that could put the first order on top for ever, If he was rubbish and so easily beaten by a total novice. It just seems like a bit of a flaw in the writing to me.

Saying that, I did think the first hour / 90 mins were very enjoyable indeed and went very quickly. It's just the last half hour or so that I was a bit disappointed by..

I've heard through a very reliable source that there's to be a Han Solo film next year. Perhaps this is common knowledge?? If so, much embarrassment over here.

TrionicLettuce · 07/01/2016 13:04

They announced the Han Solo film earlier this year. The plan is for them to alternate the "Episode" films with stand alone stories.

This December we're getting Rogue One, which is the story of how the Rebel Alliance got hold of the plans for the first Death Star.

In 2017 they'll release Episode VIII.

2018 is the Han Solo film.

2019 is Episode IX.

It's been hinted that there will be a stand alone Boba Fett story in 2020 but it's not been officially confirmed yet I don't think.

batshitlady · 08/01/2016 12:55

Blimey......I'm sick of Star Wars already!!

HanSolo · 09/01/2016 00:56

A Han Solo film you say? Will it be a 'reboot' type, or will Mr. Ford be in it?

I think Boba Fett is an excellent character, and would love to see more of him. That one will definitely be a reboot type.

Ellle · 09/01/2016 10:44

A "reboot" type. Harrison Ford has said he has nothing to do with it, he wouldn't even be a consultant.

EmmaWoodlouse · 14/02/2016 00:33

I've only just seen this and have one big question after reading all the comments here:

Lots of people are talking about Kylo Ren's possible redemption... but wasn't the entire planet destroyed moments after Chewie came back for Rey and Finn? How could he possibly be still alive? (The only way I can see it is if someone else rescued him in a ship at almost the same moment, but we didn't see it because the camera was following the other group.)

Also, we couldn't quite agree on whether it was a planet, which had been hollowed out and a Death Star-type base built inside it, or a man-made base first and parts of it had become natural looking (with the trees and snow) over time. Any thoughts, or did we somehow miss something that explained it?

mrbananabeak · 02/03/2016 16:50

Seen it 7 times already. Love the effects in 3D and Kylo Ren is breathtaking

MilleniumTalcum · 02/03/2016 16:51

Same here mrbananabeak Grin

MissBattleaxe · 02/03/2016 16:54

I thought Kylo Ren was a bit of a crap baddie actually. He wasn't the most powerful person on the Starkiller base. He looked like a disgruntled emo and he had bad skin.

mrbananabeak · 02/03/2016 21:33

he is stunning in those black robes

mrbananabeak · 02/03/2016 21:49

Look! 3 sets of puppy dog eyes Grin

I'm pretty sure that BenRen is supposed to be a crap baddie. His heart isn't really in it and he's going to be the one to kill Snoke in the end.

There's an interesting theory floating around on the internet that he and Rey have some sort of telepathic "force bond" from when they read each other's minds (apparently such bonds are a "thing" in the SW universe) which means she can instantly use skills that he will have learned over years of training; mind reading / control, telekinesis, light saber skills etc.

Who knows? I've spent waaaay too much time thinking about this film and it's annoying because it left too many unanswered questions to function as a "standalone". Like, episode 4 works fine by itself as an enjoyable space fantasy, and you don't need to see Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi to find the plot satisfying. But TFA is so obviously just a lead-in to the rest of the new trilogy.

I'm heartbroken. It has finished in cinemas and a month until DVD is released

DaphneWhitethigh · 10/03/2016 19:47

Hang on, I thought we'd dealt with the "how does total novice defeat badass Sith"?

A) both Rey and Finn are highly experienced in fighting with weapons that are just the same size and shape as light sabres and wielded in the same way
B) Kylo Renn has just been shot with a socking great laser crossbow bolt of a sort that we've just seen felling sizable trees. He's not at the top of his game.
