So, we are all being v good on the other three but I am desperate to discuss it.
So, why do we think Luke had such a teeny role (not even a flashback) and was anyone else a bit disappointed by the lack of light sabre action?

I thought R2D2 woke up when Rey arrived rather than randomly just at the right time?

HanSolo · 01/01/2016 23:29

Agreed- I think it was Rey's presence... but how can a droid feel the Force?

RomComPhooey · 01/01/2016 23:43

Yes Quietbatperson, I think your DH is right - the holoprojection bought The Wizard of Oz to mind.

We had exactly the same conversation in our family about the projection making him bigger than IRL, Oz reference included!

BestIsWest · 01/01/2016 23:58

Yes, Oz here too.

tabulahrasa · 02/01/2016 06:41

"Agreed- I think it was Rey's presence... but how can a droid feel the Force?"

I'm figuring it's either because she is Luke's daughter...or she's who Luke has been waiting for, rather than the force.

regenerationfez · 02/01/2016 09:05

mrsfrumble I have a little Ben too, and thought the same thing when Han called him on the bridge. It was just the tone a parent would do to a naughty child. And refuse to use his silly nickname!

I've been contemplating the Jedi celibacy thing in the wake of Rens parentage. Why does sci to always do this? Is it because women are seen as just a distraction to the more noble pursuits of fighting aliens? Surely the best way to continue the force would be through your genes? It's the same in Doctor Who. I think they were supposed to be celibate. He was all 'ooh I'm the last of the Time Lords. I'm so sad! oh look. A woman who is like a Timelord. But I won't do the obvious and have a child with her...'

HanSolo · 02/01/2016 16:30

Who is celibate in doctor who?
The timelords all have spouses and children
The doctor included.

NuggetofPurestGreen · 02/01/2016 17:13

Well there are women jedi regeneration so not just celibate men. Isn't it so they are fully devoted to the force?

regenerationfez · 02/01/2016 17:17

Isn't there something in Doctor Who about conception not by sex? Maybe I've been reading too much fan fiction....

Re devotion to the Force. That never works- a bit like priests devotion to Catholicism Grin

Has anyone read the Wheel of Time books?

One character suggests that the habit of the female magic-users of taking up a nun-like life (and the killing of male magic-users because they all go mad) has been selecting the ability to use magic out of the population, like selective breeding of farm animals.

Trills · 02/01/2016 17:27

My WHY DO THEY DO THIS? question goes on this:

Why does anyone do what Kylo Ren says?

With Darth Vader it made sense - he was the protogee of the Emperor (previously Senator), and the Emperor had proven himself to be clever and good at making plans. Plus he was a grownup, we can imagine that he'd had many years of experience and training.

Kylo Ren is a moody teenager. He has no (or little) military training. Why is he allowed to be in charge of an army? He can do magic, yes, but that doesn't give you good tactical knowledge.

Is there just some kind of memory that says "grumpy Force-user wearing black - better do as he says"?

regenerationfez · 02/01/2016 18:48

Is it just because he is Darth Vader grandson? I didn't think he cwas actually in charge. Just that he was the one chosen by Giant Gollum to be trained into leadership. None of the space Nazis had much respect for him.

SouthWestmom · 02/01/2016 19:32

I asked this earlier and someone said he was because he was Vaders grandson and the only trained Jedi.

OP posts:
Trills · 02/01/2016 20:22

I just think that there's not a lot of overlap in "being a trained Jedi" and "being useful in a military/industrial complex".

Maybe they were just humouring him and letting him stalk about thinking he was important.

HanSolo · 02/01/2016 22:44

Yes. Did you see how many stormtroopers were at the 'Nuremberg' speech? All sniggering inside their helmets, with their com-links off Wink

SouthWestmom · 03/01/2016 07:49

I agree, I wasn't very sure - I suspect they need him onside so he and the red headed one are maybe interns?

OP posts:
TriIls · 03/01/2016 09:55

Have you all seen and enjoyed Emo Kylo Ren?

HanSolo · 03/01/2016 11:00

He is a little bit important, in that he's a Resistance General's child.

Trills · 03/01/2016 11:16

That makes him a valuable hostage. Or a source of information. But not someone to be obeyed.

I guess we don't know how long he's been with them for.

regenerationfez · 03/01/2016 11:57

Or even just a pawn in a propaganda war. How old is he meant to be? I don't know the actors name so can't even Google!

Trills · 03/01/2016 12:02

I'd have liked to see him being used as a figurehead (like the mockingjay) without having any actual power of his own. And maybe see whether he notices that or whether he thinks that he is actually important.

I FEEL that the character is no more than 22. The actor is probably 30. But that's how these things go.

But what we actually saw was that he was in charge of a mission to retrieve important information. He got to decide to let the droid to, because Rey had the information they needed. He was left to interrogate a valuable prisoner alone.

That's not good leadership strategy guys.

regenerationfez · 03/01/2016 12:39

The Empire/ first order have always been strategically severely lacking in imagination though. They can't even think of a new weapon of destruction, despite the Death Star being proven on several occasions to be quite easily destroyable Confused

FattyNinjaOwl · 03/01/2016 12:41

Kylo ren is around 30. He was born soon after the battle of endor.

NotDavidTennant · 03/01/2016 12:52

Surely everyone obeys Kylo Ren because Supreme Commander Snope has picked him as his protege and the First Order all have to do what Snope says because he's their ... erm ... supreme commander. Maybe when he realises how useless Kylo Ren is, and how powerful Rey is, he'll try to recruit her as his protege instead.

Trills · 03/01/2016 13:11

born soon after the battle of endor

Soon? So was Leia already pregnant? Had Han and Leia been shagging while we weren't looking?! :o Shock
