So, we are all being v good on the other three but I am desperate to discuss it.
So, why do we think Luke had such a teeny role (not even a flashback) and was anyone else a bit disappointed by the lack of light sabre action?

So good, I've never been to the cinema and had surreptitious tears I had to wipe away because characters I had loved age 8 were reappearing! I purposely didn't read a single article or topic that might have had spoilers once I knew the film was happening so each character reveal was magical.

My take on Finn is he is the opposite to Kylo, one was brought up to fight, kill, hate and the other was loved and taught to channel all his talents for the greater good and yet they couldn't fight who they basically were deep down. Obviously that doesn't cover the grandparent who was famously bad unless future episodes unearth a grandparent who was equally saintly!

I am now plotting to go back and see it in 3G with DS1 who I have brought up as a good Jedi and was prodding me just as much as I prodded him when we noticed references to the old films. Proud I was.

WiIdfire · 25/12/2015 23:52

Interesting! Apparently Harrison Ford is signed up to do the next film - wonder what role he'll have? Flashbacks? Ghost? Not really dead? Can't wait!

HanSolo · 26/12/2015 00:42

Maybe he I was blown back up, out of the top of the oscillator by the blast of the planet collapsing? [clutches at straws]

And mysteriously healed that lightsaber wound (cauterised, perhaps?)

Bambambini · 26/12/2015 01:12

Flashbacks with his son would make sense.

Hels20 · 26/12/2015 08:22

Have seen it again and just love it.

Wildfire - where did you read that Harrison Ford is signed up to do the next one? I would like to clutch at straws too Han. It would make my Christmas if somehow he wasn't dead.

And do you think Rey will end up with Finn or Poe? I don't really get Poe's link - other than that Leia really trusts him.

Hope that there are flashbacks with an explanation of how Leia and Han drifted apart.

We are going for the 2nd time later today. That we are all looking forwards to it almost as much as the first time is telling about the decent job JJ Abrams has made of this one.

I saw it on the 20th. It's a new hope all over again.
DS1 (7) was with us. He loved it. He nearly cried when han died and let out a cheer when chewie blasted kylo ren Grin
Kylo ren is a stroppy teen. I thought he's been under so much pressure to be the next Jedi and carry that on, that he's rebelled and that's why he's chosen to be like his grandad. (Even if he is a much shitter version)

Hels20 - I saw it on a casting recruitment information sheet. Don't know how true it is though.

WhereYouLeftIt · 26/12/2015 15:33

I wondered if the very fairly obvious copying homage to 'A New Hope' was part of the plot (as opposed to part of the marketing). Y'know, history repeating itself because they'd left a power vacuum, etc. and all to be explained in episode 8 or 9.

Still absolutely loved it!

tribpot · 26/12/2015 16:22

Ford is in the cast list for Episode VIII on IMDB although that could just be so that people didn't get the spoiler.

rosebiggs · 26/12/2015 16:50

I wonder if Poe could be a Jedi also? Perhaps Leia has been sheltering him.

LeonardoAcropolis · 26/12/2015 20:32

I loved it! According to an article in the Daily Fail, you can hear the voices of Yoda and Obi Wan (both Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor) in the segment when the light sabre is calling for Rey. Frank Oz and Ewan McGregor recorded lines for this film so I wonder if their characters will return in the next films?

LollipopViolet · 26/12/2015 21:41

OK, I just watched A New Hope (my friend asked me to watch the Force Awakens with her, and up till then I hadn't seen all of the films properly). I get some of the references now - in particular the trash compactor/garbage chute reference.

I'm also a complete convert - I love Star Wars! Grin

rosebiggs · 26/12/2015 21:41

I think that was just a flash back. They are both well dead in star wars terms.

LeonardoAcropolis · 26/12/2015 22:08

According to that article, the film makers manipulated Alec Guinness's voice to say"Rey". Interesting.

rosebiggs · 26/12/2015 22:14

In the star wars world nothing ever really dies and the force runs through everything (deep) so obi wan would be guiding Rey as a Jedi just as he guided Luke.

MrsJamin · 26/12/2015 22:55

Just saw it with my family this evening, loved it. Rey being luke's daughter seems most likely.

HanSolo · 26/12/2015 23:54

Saw it for a third time today. I don't think she is Luke's daughter now, I think she's just a force youngling.

BestIsWest · 27/12/2015 23:58

Saw today and enjoyed very much. Liked Rey and Finn. Could Finn be Lando's son? I wondered when Maz said about seeing the same eyes. Or is he too young?

I was heartbroken to lose Han. I've loved him since seeing A New Hope aged 14 in 1977. I knew he was a goner as soon as he stepped on to that walkway. Really, where are their Health and Safety people? Do you think he's really gone? IMDB has him down as filming Ep VIII but I suppose they'd have to say that.

And yes to Snape, we all said the same as we came out. I think he's a beautiful young man but he doesn't look like the offspring of Han and Leia.

HarrietSchulenberg · 28/12/2015 00:28

Saw SW last week and loved it, having grown up with episodes 4-6 but hated 1-3.
My thoughts are:

Rey is Luke's daughter (she was called by his lightsaber and obvs has the Force).

Han is not dead, though I really can't figure out why not. a) director said that ALL the cast would be filming episode 8 (poss that Han has a beyond-the-grave cameo, though), b) he's survived before (frozen in carbonite, which could have had an unknown long-term effect), and c) it's a great literary/movie device reminiscent of Gandalf disappearing into the depths of Moria at the hands of the Balrog, only to return reborn. Han was really showing his age back there so I reckon he comes back re-energised in some way in episode 8.

SouthWestmom · 28/12/2015 09:25

I dont want Han to be alive , it would be too much Dallas shower scene. Plus it would mean Ren had a chance of redemption having not actually killed his father. I also think Rey is probably Luke's but that doesn't work for me.
I'm not sure about Ren, some of it was played for laughs (Po taking the lists out of the mask, stormtroopers walking away from his tantrums
) But then he was capable of torture and killing.

Yes, I really liked the 'so, who talks first' line. Seemed more to be taking the piss more than it was bravado.

chanie44 · 28/12/2015 22:03

I saw it today and really enjoyed it.

Rey - i can't see how she can be either Luke or leias daughter, but I think she isn't randomly connected.

BenRen - I was disappointed when he took off his mask. I like how unplanned he his, almost like what anakin should have been.
