So, we are all being v good on the other three but I am desperate to discuss it.
So, why do we think Luke had such a teeny role (not even a flashback) and was anyone else a bit disappointed by the lack of light sabre action?

I loved it too. I'm not a mad Star Wars fan at all, but I felt tears prick my eyes when that rolling start came up, because the last time I saw that in the cinema, I must have been about 10 watching the Empire strikes Back! I was the only one that gasped when Han died, so others must have been on their second visit. The only problem I had with it is the problem I have with the whole Star Wars universe. Why do the Dark Side not just give up? They build a death star, it gets blown up, build another death star, it gets blown up. Fight the resistance, lose, fight the resistance again, lose. But I sat through 2 hours cand it whizzed past. I loved Daisy Ridley and the rest of the new cast. Loved it. I'll see it again with the kids and I can't wait!

HanSolo · 21/12/2015 11:32

regeneration- I am astonished at how many resources building those space stations/weapons the size of a planet must use up, yet the baddies just go back and start building again.

The man hours wasted...

I went to see it on Friday but DH won't see it until today. That's a whole weekend of DS and i not being able to discuss it though i did tell he has to spot which stormtrooper is played by Daniel Craig.

Was in tears when Han Solo died but i imagine he will be make fleeting appearances (like Anakin/Obi/Yoda in ROTJ) in future movies. Didn't like the Kylo Ren character at all and thought Leia came across as quite cold.

As for Rey, i think she's more likely to be Luke's daughter than Leia's but i'd prefer it if she was just natually blessed with the force!

SouthWestmom · 21/12/2015 13:56

I can't think of any situation where leia and hans would leave their dd and not check up on her. Unless the old guy with Po at the beginning knows more ?
Actually why was Po there? Maybe he is more important than we think.

Just come back from seeing it now.

Overall I thought the dialogue could have been funnier - if only they had perhaps been able to find one of Hollywood's best script doctors to help out

It seemed a bit too Episode IVish for me, it was never adequately explained why things seemed to have reverted almost back to the way they were in the intervening 30 years, politically I mean. It might have made more sense to have seen some scenes in the Republic, to show there is some other alliance of planets but the Resistance are not prepared to allow the First Order to grow any stronger (wise choice given the planet sized Death Stars they've upgraded to now - Death Star II was much bigger than I, so I dread to think what Death Star IV is going to look like).

I would have liked to have seen more of the snappy dialogue between Han and Leia - I liked that they still seemed to love each other but overall I thought Leia had mellowed too much. Not enough of her being in command, even though she clearly is.

In terms of Han's death, I started to think it seemed likely when they were on the bridge, and it made me realise that quite likely Harrison Ford just could not be arsed being in all three movies. I'm not sure the concern was him dying (despite breaking a leg on set and then crashing a plane into a golf course after filming) - I'd be more worried about Carrie Fisher given the battering she's given her body with drugs over the years. I'm sure also the idea was to repeat the emblematic theme of sons killing fathers, or father figures (Vader and Kenobi, Luke and Vader). However, wot no funeral scene?Really they should have set fire to the Millennium Falcon in the Viking tradition.

I thought it worked well establishing Finn and Rey, both very interesting characters. Glad that Po (not a Teletubby) is still alive, hopefully there is some point to this which we'll see in the next movie.

My DH reckons re the humour that in iv they thought it was some low budget bollocks so just horsed around, and it ended up brilliant, but it can't be recreated. I agree that it's far less likely Carrie Fisher will last all 3 films than Harrison Ford.

WeirdCatLadyIsFeelingFestive · 21/12/2015 21:13

Maybe Rey will be the actual Chosen One, she will bring balance to the Force???

SouthWestmom · 21/12/2015 21:18

Maybe. I'm not sure how much I want to watch anymore tbh. I don't think the story about the son going bad was very strong - it was a bit like a stroppy teenager and even the way Leia and Hans spoke about him didn't really convey any sense of real horror at what he did

This has some really interesting nuggets of information.

I really enjoyed it, and am looking forward to seeing it again! I thought the petulant anger of Kylo Ren echoed Anakin in The Phantom menace, and din't Yoda keep banging on about controlling your anger before it leads you to the dark side? I think the way the plot mirrored ep IV was intentional, to sort of eradicate the horror that was Ep I - III...

I thought Daisy Ridley was brilliant, and I loved all the references to the old films - her scavenging in the star destroyer graveyard, the hologram chess, the cantina...and lots more.

(Love the star Wars logo Mumsnet Towers - can we have a lightsabre smiley please?)

Duckdeamon · 21/12/2015 21:29

You couldn't burn the millenium falcon tribpot, han would turn in his grave!

Hope Leia feels suitably guilty for sending Han to his death!

On reflection I give it 8/10 because it was very enjoyable, but loses points for non-originality because of the reprises of stories from A New Hope. Also some clunky script moments ("we have a heartbeat"!) that should've been better edited.

What are the rogue squadrons then?

Saw it today - Han's death came as a complete shock! Wasn't expecting it at all :(

I loved it though, and I'm not a massive Star Wars fan but it was so good! Kylo Ren is Kevin the Teenager when he's angry, isn't he??? Grin

Dickorydockwhatthe · 21/12/2015 23:38

I think Kylo Ren was brilliant in the fact when he took his mask off he was nothing like we were expecting him to be. He was awkward and unsure as if he had lost his way. The actor who plays him is actually in his 30's which I would never have guessed from the film so I guess there is definitely room for him to grow and mature.

Dickorydockwhatthe · 21/12/2015 23:39

and expand his character.

LollipopViolet · 21/12/2015 23:43

I need to see all the other films properly now! I also would LOVE to fly/drive something like the Falcon! Grin

I actually liked Kylo Ren, there's something about his character that fascinated me, definitely agree it'll develop over the films. My friend and I were 2 of only 3 women in our screening, of about 12 people, but we both love the fact that there's a new, female central protagonist, and she's ace.

RomComPhooey · 21/12/2015 23:59

I had to look the KyloRen actor up on IMDB because I recognised him but couldn't place him. He plays Lena Dunham's pervy boyfriend in Girls.

I enjoyed the new film waaay more than I expected, having previously walked out of the cinema during the ep3 snoozefest. Commented to DH how things had moved on with women having better roles. There were even female pilots and fighters in the background at the rebel base, not just Rey.

Lightbulbon · 22/12/2015 01:03

Seeing that kylo ren was Adam rom girls kind of ruined it for me. I can't separate him from that character.

Usually they use unknowns or did they not think Star Wars and girls have the same audience?

It was good but it felt like more of a remake than a sequel to me.

At least it passed the beschdel test, just.

tribpot · 22/12/2015 08:23

Christ I didn't recognise him as Adam from Girls. That will make it easier to bear when Luke has to kill him at the end (I hope). He can't be redeemed now he's killed Han anyway.

I've never even seen ep3, I couldn't be arsed after the direness of 1 and 2. But I also appreciated the number of women on screen just getting on with stuff the same as men. It's one of the things Geena Davis campaigns on - she noted recently that crowd scenes in movies feature on average just 17% women, which is so easy to fix.

RomComPhooey · 22/12/2015 08:39

But I also appreciated the number of women on screen just getting on with stuff the same as men

That's what made me think this new Star Wars movie had moved on, even though it very much had the retro feel of IV-VI.

RomComPhooey · 22/12/2015 08:40

And the Hobbit films had almost no women in them whatsoever, especially not in the (dull) CGI crowd scenes. Total sausage fest.

namechangingagainagain · 22/12/2015 08:49

I saw it on Saturday with the children and im going back tonight on my own to watch in 3d.

Agree with pp r.e. the presence of women on screen..... no just Rey but female fighter pilots in background/ Leia in charge and a female baddy for once. would like of see more of Phasma in next film.

loved the whole lot of it.......the xwings coming over the lake..... Po doing he run down the trench.... the first sight of the millennium falcon..... all of it made me grin.

I knew Hans time was up when he went on the bridge...... but Han knew that too I think? It was also really clever how kylo ren semed like the immature Anakin before he became vader- seemed really angry and vulnerable at times. Very clever.

Music was amazeballs as always.. loved the "luke" music used with rey. Think it as missing a strong new/ theme for the first order new baddies but will have a listen tonight and see if I missed it.

And it was laugh at loud funny at times ( 1-111 were humourless i thought).....

All in all 10/10. my new favourite film

OccamsLadyshaveToo · 22/12/2015 09:09

We saw it last night and totally loved it. So great that there is now a Star Wars fancy dress costume for girls that isn't sexy bikini Leia! That hair style looks quite easy to recreate too!

I'm really embarrassed though that I thought it was Keira Knightley playing Rey throughout the whole film! She does look a bit like her, but is obviously about 10 years younger.

In my defence I've never been very good at recognising celebrities.

ThatsHowYouGetAnts · 22/12/2015 11:15

Saw it yesterday and loved it.

I think they did a great job of referencing the look and feel of the original trilogy without making it hokey or pastichey...it felt sincere and authentic. When the music started and the crawl appeared I welled up Blush. It just tapped straight into my childhood.

Kylo was a really interesting villain, the angst, rage and petulance under the edgy-masked-badass exterior.

Rey was fantastic. I loved the scene near the start where Finn sees her get attacked by the two men trying to steal BB8 and he dashes to help - I mean, we've all seen this before, he'll save her and they'll team up, right? But before he even gets to her she's beaten them. I love that.

Han's death was a gut-punch, but I rather think Harrison Ford probably agreed to do one film but not the whole series, and better to have a dramatic and important death scene than just be off-screen with some half-arsed explanation for the next films. I really want to know more about why the son of Leia and Han would turn to the dark side...he seems to have a fascination with the mystique of Vader, but there must be more than that to it.

Finn was great. I think I would have liked to see more of the effects of having been (it seems?) stolen as a baby and raised in this very cold, militaristic, brainwashy way as a stormtrooper without even a name, only a number. He seemed a normal guy, bit too much so, given his background. Why was he horrified at having to commit stormtrooper atrocities when none of the others seemed to have a problem with it? Not sure I'm explaining this very well Blush...I think I would have liked to see him struggle a bit more with realising that what he's been trained to do is wrong, and with fitting in once he meets "normal" people and joins the resistance.

But overall, thought it was wonderful. Going to go again and take the DC. They are 7 and 10 so DP and I went to scope it out and see what the 12A rating was for before we took them.
