Scariest movie you've ever watched.

It would have to be the Conjuring for me, and I do not scare easily.
It doesn't help either that it's based on a true story.

I found the exorcist 3 terrifying. Far scarier than the other two.

Also insidious and insidious 2 really got under my skin. I don't scare easily by horror movies so I was surprised at these.

War movies are where my real fears lie Blush

Nocturne123 · 08/03/2015 19:18

Inthewhiteroom yes to the changeling !Confused

handfulofcottonbuds · 08/03/2015 19:26

Feenie - it's horrible, truly horrible and graphic but why did you sit on the stairs instead of going to bed?

Dogsmom · 08/03/2015 19:47

I love horror films of all types and The Conjuring is the best I've seen lately.

Wolf Creek was a bit sick for me as was Creep, I'm never comfortable watching sexual violence.

With the Descent I loved the film but didn't get the ending, did she escape or not?

Feenie · 08/03/2015 20:04

I think it was when ds was tiny and so was probably in our bed already. Can remember thinking that actually, I don't have to sit and watch it if I don't want to. So went and read my book on the stairs instead. Horrible film.

EponasWildDaughter · 08/03/2015 20:06

Event Horizon - bloody hell i had no idea it was going to be a scary film and watched it one afternoon with 4 kids between 8 - 11. Arrrgghh! Spent the whole time with my hands, arms, legs and anything i could reach with trying to help cover their eyes and my with my own eyes shut most of the time! All of us squealing a lot. Happy memories, lol.

Since then Conjuring and Sinister are the worst for me. More so than The Ring or The Grudge, although both those pretty grim.

In Sinister i found the bit where, in the photo of the family dead in the swimming pool, you see the demon under the water, and it turns slowly to face the camera, the most chilling thing i've ever seen in a film. Just ugh.

rosieposey · 08/03/2015 20:09

I used to love horror films when i was younger ( am 43 now) but i have chickened out of the more gory ones these days - loved the Babadook and was surprised that i didn't find it that scary, just a very good story with great acting.

My all time scariest is (and i can't believe no one has mentioned this Shock )is Hellraiser, nasty, scary film - shat myself ( metaphorically) and was haunted by the scenes in it for a very long time.

I am normally ok with films that have religious connections ( the omen, the exorcist ect) but that was just horrible.

I have read the synopsis on wiki for Event Horizon and googled a couple of the images and i will be avoiding that one too i think - it looks really scary!

TheFirstOfHerName · 08/03/2015 20:12

I accidentally watched Poltergeist on TV in the US, not long after it was shown in the cinema. I was nine or ten. Shock

TheFirstOfHerName · 08/03/2015 20:21

Saw Event Horizon in the cinema but at least I was an adult at the time.

I went to see one of the Alien films (the second) in the cinema when I was 11 or 12. It was an R, but a friend's sister was 17 and she went with us as the accompanying adult. We sat in the front row. I remember very little about the film itself but do remember how terrified I was.

packofbaloobas · 08/03/2015 20:22

Wolf creek had a terrible effect on me. I loved horrors up to then but this terrified me fir a long time.I think it was because it was based on fact . I've sworn off horrors since.
Cariad the fact that the main actor presented homes and gardens is like a counselling session for me!

Comingfoccacia · 08/03/2015 20:24

Blair Witch Project gave me the chills. Even typing it makes me shudder. All those spooky noises.

BamBam21 · 08/03/2015 20:24

Another vote for the original Woman in Black. I was about 12 when it came on and DB and I still agree on it being the most terrifying thing ever. When she is hovering over the bed and you hear the voice of the Little boy.........

EponasWildDaughter · 08/03/2015 20:27

Hellraiser - i saw that in the cinema when it was first released and it was awful. (local cinema never checked ID) I got in to see Videodrome (about snuff movies) as well. And The Thing. That was pretty harrowing!

All 3 of these frightened the shite out of the 'too young to be in there' me. These 3 are the only films where i've seen people walk out of the cinema, too.

SoftKittyWarmKitty · 08/03/2015 20:28

Eponas why didn't you just switch it off? It's an 18 certificate so I can't understand why you'd let young kids watch it.

I really hated Eden Lake. It's not terrifying as such but it's quite tense and believable in terms of it could realistically happen, and the ending is hideous. Never again.

SomewhereIBelong · 08/03/2015 20:32

The Thing and Aliens are about as scary as I go... glad to see this thread - shows me what films to avoid....

CapnMurica · 08/03/2015 20:36

dreamingofblueskies I have Alien Isolation and really like it. Alien is my favourite movie ever, the game is really scary!

EponasWildDaughter · 08/03/2015 20:37

I should have noticed the cert. i know Blush

I must seem like i'm an awful mum. I did keep on offering to turn it off, but in all honesty with all the eye covering and screaching and laughing it was ok. (the kids are aged 18 - 21 now. We still remember and laugh about that afternoon. They all watched it again a few years later to actually see the darn film :))

EponasWildDaughter · 08/03/2015 20:41

Oh and we also are now all scaring ourselves shitless with watching DH play Alien Isolation Grin

I keep finding i'm holding my breath and start to feel faint!

Cariad007 · 08/03/2015 20:43

Most disappointing "scary" movie for me was Blair Witch Project. It was hyped up beyond belief (the first film to have an online marketing campaign?) but I found it utterly unscary and very boring.

handfulofcottonbuds · 08/03/2015 20:46

spoiler alert

Dogsmom - yes she got out......but then she got bashed over the head by some yokel and fell back down into the pit again to be eaten alive.

Ginrummy · 08/03/2015 20:48

When I was young, I'd say Psycho or the Exorcist or the Omen. Now, probably the Descent or Blair Witch or Ju'On. I love horrors. I nearly watched When the Lights Went Out last night but thought it might be rubbish. I'll give it a go after reading pp.

ememem84 · 08/03/2015 20:48

the grudge and the ring in the original Japanese/Korean. the subtitles made it scarier, because i had to keep watching/reading.

i don't like the saw movies, but have seen all of them, they're just too gory/disturbing but not scary. (except DH had a box set, which had the clown/puppet thing on it, and if you pressed it it laughed...i got rid of that when it set itself off once absolutely peed my pants).

IneffectiveHuman · 08/03/2015 20:50

I don't 'do' horrors either as I scare quite easily. There's a few films I point blank refuse to watch. Having said that the conjuring was terrifying. The bit with the clapping and the sheet blowing off in the wind . Also mirrors is really scary.

ErinBlockerBitch · 08/03/2015 20:54

Skeleton Key - that has stayed with me. Creepy.

eveylikesv · 08/03/2015 20:58

The Grudge, but the original Japanese one. Still gives me shivers. I remember we watched it with dp in the night in bed. Couldn't even hide under duvet as the creepy boy was already there (screams)
