Scariest movie you've ever watched.

It would have to be the Conjuring for me, and I do not scare easily.
It doesn't help either that it's based on a true story.

Oh and Sinister was pretty scary, it really was "sinister"

HeisenbergsBlueMeth · 08/03/2015 15:58

I also watched a film, cant remember the name, about a guy who goes to stay in a hotel room that's allegedly haunted and all this really weird shit happens and he's trapped in the room

It was from a Stephen King book, and i don't know anyone else that found it scary, but it absolutely terrified me, it really freaked me out

Piratejones · 08/03/2015 16:00

Room 1408 Heisenbergs

dreamingofblueskies · 08/03/2015 16:07

The book of 1408 is scarier than the film, really creeped me out.

Cariad007 · 08/03/2015 16:15

Have to say I prefer suspenseful films like Event Horizon and The Others to torture porn like the Saw sequels and Hostel, which seem to basically be "lets see how disgustingly gory we can make this".

I've not seen Wolf Creek but I'm Australian and the actor playing the villain in it was, for a long time, Australia's host of a Better Homes and Gardens!

handfulofcottonbuds · 08/03/2015 16:21

cariad - that makes me feel a bit better knowing he hosted a mild TV programme. He makes a nasty villain.

HeisenbergsBlueMeth · 08/03/2015 16:24

Yes that's the one, it really bothered me, it was freaky

Don't know if i could face reading the book Grin i never thought a book could be scary as its just words on a page, then i read The Shining and shit myself

Pandabee11 · 08/03/2015 16:25

Jacobs ladder; the whole idea of Devils being Angels helping you let go of life, really scared me.

Silence of the Lambs; I actually felt sorry for Hannibal, until his escape. And I still can't watch the actor who played Buffalo Bill.....or listen to wild horses!

1408, got to me at the time. But only because our ikea sideboard slowly decided to give out and finally the bottom fell out with a crash. If I'd been a cartoon cat, I'd still be stuck to the ceiling.

Flambola · 08/03/2015 16:34

Audition and A Tale of Two Sisters. Asian horror is terrifying.

blendedfamilygrinch · 08/03/2015 16:34

The descent for me too. I was terrified & had to leave the cinema. Waiting for the tube to go home afterwards was petrifying - standing next to the tunnel convinced whiteys were in there. Dh went back the next evening to watch the ending & told me they all escape. I know he lied to stop the nightmares Smile

handfulofcottonbuds · 08/03/2015 16:35

That's love that is Smile

PurpleCrazyHorse · 08/03/2015 16:37

I've not managed to watch more than half of Carrie. It's the hammer to the ankles thing that really gets me.

YourMaNoBraBackOfMyCar · 08/03/2015 16:52

Ooh another one supposedly based on a true story is When The lights went out. It's set during the power cuts in the 70's. A family in Yorkshire move into a council house only to find it's haunted by two ghosts one which physically assaults the daughter. It's currently on Sky if anyone wants to watch it.

MrsKravitzFromAcrossTheStreet · 08/03/2015 17:02

Cor I'm going to seek out Event Horizon after reading this. I love a good horror although I don't find many modern ones scary - I did enjoy The Woman in Black though. The Conjouring, Sinister, Insidious, The Babadook were all enjoyable and made me jump but didn't stay with me like the old ones and I could sleep fine afterwards. I think films are scariest when the suspense builds gradually and you don't see too much; The Shining, The Exorcist, the original Omen. I still cannot watch The Exorcist again. I have tried but had to turn off when the first subliminal flash of that awful white face appeared. I first saw it in the cinema when I was 17 and pregnant and couldn't sleep properly for weeks.

The Grudge was terrifying but I think that was exaggerated by my being on amphetamine-type medication that made me super jumpy anyway.

I really like Spanish horror films too - The Orphanage, Devil's Backbone, REC. And the original Let The Right One In which I think is Swedish?

Agree about Salem's Lot too - wtf were they thinking putting that on tv where kids who should have been in bed could see it? The music alone scared me to death.

Also, the first half hour of Jeepers Creepers is so tense that my pelvic floor muscles collapsed under the strain.

handfulofcottonbuds · 08/03/2015 17:08

I actually read a synopsis of Event Horizon after it being mentioned on this thread so many times - great actors but I really think it's one I could never watch...........sounds horrible!

Cariad007 · 08/03/2015 17:11

Oh, The Orphanage is another one as sad as it is chilling.

And another scary thing is that the kids of the future will watch The Ring and think "Wtf is a videotape?"!

IDoAllMyOwnStunts · 08/03/2015 17:16

I watched The Conjuring last night, there are make you jump bits but didn't find it overly scary. I thought When The Lights Went Out was worse.

PuppyMonkey · 08/03/2015 17:18

The original silent film Nosferatu takes a lot to beat for sheer weird creepiness.Shock

Piratejones · 08/03/2015 17:20

The 70's remake is also very creepy, the dinner table scene is really unnerving.

AmazonGrace · 08/03/2015 17:22

I found the book Red Dragon much scarier than the film and I couldn't finish the book about Amytiville.

As I've got older I jump much more during scary films. I do like being scared though, same with roller coasters, terrified of heights but love the thrill!

Films which stayed with me are 10 Rillington Place, think as I was only young it left much more of an impression and it was based on a true story. The Shining is another which frightened the life out of me.

Whoever mentioned the game Silent Hill, yes, I totally agree. Played it many moons ago and I could only play it if Dp was in the room, to many dark rooms with grotesque noises, yuk!

I've not been able to watch any of the paranormal activity films, it's the events happening in your home which get me with this series of films. I did enjoy Insidious though (work that one out as it's in the home) and Devil!

EndoplasmicReticulum · 08/03/2015 17:23

Yes to Event Horizon. Still not forgiven husband for taking me to the cinema to see it, telling me it was "sci-fi". Well yes, with added "you won't need eyes where you're going".

Also Woman in Black, which my MIL made me watch. I don't find gory stuff as scary as all the make you jump stuff.

AmazonGrace · 08/03/2015 17:25

Must watch Event Horizon though, don't know how this one slipped through the net.

Watched all of the Saw films and they've not really bothered me. Blair Witch, saw this at the pictures and I think I let the hype get to me, I wanted to be scared, looking back though it wasn't really that bad.

Fuckup · 08/03/2015 18:08

recently watched the awakening, not the best horror ive ever seen but a few good jumpies. Also theres a spanish film called .rec thats got some jumpy bits if you like them. In terms of staying with me must be switchblade romance, really shat me up just the horrifickness of it.

Recently played outlast on ps4 with dp, oh my days i couldnt breathe. Way too scarey. Not playing it when its dark again!

elQuintoConyo · 08/03/2015 18:57

Surprised no one has mentioned The Fog. I saw it when I was 11.

Shat
My
Pants

Haven't dared see it since.

Nothing else has scared me. DH and I went through a Japanese horror stage: Ring, Grudge, Two Sisters, The Eye. Only Dark Water scared us - DH is still too scared to got for a wee in.the night if I tell him I'd seen a Japanese girl with long hair behind the shower curtain Grin

Oh, and Woman in Black on tv a millionty years ago (30?) I was very young and very scared.

Feenie · 08/03/2015 19:05

Another vote for Wolf Creek - terrifying. I went and sat on the stairs until it had finished!
