What is the most overrated film you've ever seen? Can I suggest Her?

WTF was that about? It's taken me weeks to watch it. It was up for Oscars as well.

I haven't seen Her. I love Joaquin Phoenix but he has a tendency to act in some very strange unique films. Think he must like a challenge Grin.

There are a few films I thought were hugely overrated, but most of them were so shit that I've forgotten the titles. However I've remembered:

The Fabulous Baker Boys (dire)
The Haunted Mansion (fell asleep)
Inception (didn't get it)
Shutter Island (ditto)
American Gangster (boring, switched it off 20 mins in)
Plus numerous kids films that I've sat through for DS's sake.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 06/01/2015 22:31

The Usual Suspects - tried three times, fell asleep three times.

American Hustle - embarrassingly bad

Godfather 3 - ditto

American Beauty - just dull

However I loved Lost in Translation and Brokeback Mountain.

piemashandliquer · 06/01/2015 22:32

George Clooney - Solaris
Lord of the Rings
The Hobbit

I loved Training Day and Saving Private Ryan!

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 06/01/2015 22:32

Oh and the Christmas one, It's a Wonderful Life or something? Have slept through it often. I must have missed the wonderful bit.

EachandEveryone · 06/01/2015 22:53

I'm shocking I don't like black and white films!

The Artist, anyone?

cruikshank · 06/01/2015 22:56

Just remembered another one. The Happening. Nothing does. For the entire length of the film. It's just fucking boring. Loads of shots of grass and trees moving which are obviously meant to be scary but no - it's just shots of grass and trees moving. It's so bad it's not even funny. Even Zooey Deschanel can't save it. It's beyond redemption. Never, ever watch this film.

And other. You've Got An Email. I would rather gouge my eyes out with my bare hands than watch this fucking shite again. Meg Ryan doing that ditzy quirky-mouthed fuckola that she does, and Tom Hanks being a fucking wanker, as per. The only way it could possibly have redeemed itself is if it were to end with them dying in a bizarre shagging accident, preferably involving mutilated faces going 'urgh', with loads of blood and gore and that. However, that doesn't happen, so it is just shit.

flipchart · 06/01/2015 23:03

I loved The Artist!

cruikshank · 06/01/2015 23:10

I loved The Artist as well! Gorgeous to look at, warm and engaging, fab leading actors and the homage to Herrmann (sp?) was lovely.

HayDayRookie · 06/01/2015 23:45

linerunner

They should be fucking ashamed.

Grin Grin Grin Grin

cerealqueen · 06/01/2015 23:52

Happy Feet, I hate it with a passion.

Egog · 07/01/2015 00:11

Sweeney Todd. That song! Truly awful. "Joanna..." I was glad when they all got eaten.

Lovecat · 07/01/2015 00:53

John Carter.

What the fuck was all that about? Biggest pile of drivel I've ever seen. And I've had to sit through Along Came Polly...

tinklykeys · 07/01/2015 02:27

Bridesmaids. Is it funny? I don't get it!
Tropic thunder. Bought it on a whim at Tesco and binned after 15 minutes. Horrendous!!

QuickSilverFairy · 07/01/2015 02:46

I loved Last of the Mohicans and Blair Witch Project!

Hated Chariots of Fire, Color Purple, All of Harry Potter, all of Twilight, Paranormal Activity.

FeckthisFrankie · 07/01/2015 07:06

Four Christmases. Dire. And I'll watch any pap with Christmas in the title but never again.

MN164 · 07/01/2015 08:12

More recently (rather than all time)

Interstellar (2 hours 45 mins too long)

The Lego Movie (migraine inducing)

Bridesmaids (not funny and keeping women in the dark ages)

sourdrawers · 07/01/2015 08:23

I can't believe someone said Casablanca!! It's a classic FGS.
Cineastes will hate me for this, but I can't stand Fellini's films, in particular 8 1/2, what self-referential, turgid dross.

BTW anyone see The Great Beauty? What silliness that was. Some overpaid/privileged/self-absorbed old fart looking back over his shallow life saying "woe is me" throughout. All intercut gratuitously with Renaissance architecture for some reason. CCrraaappp..

Roussette · 07/01/2015 09:19

I agree about Avatar. What a pile of poo it was. Me, DH and two other couples made a night of it going to a naice cinema with comfy seats to watch it. We had more fun in the pub after. Just to make sure I hadn't misjudged it, I started to watch it on the telly the other day, OMG I couldn't last about 10 minutes before grinding my teeth.

Sometimes I think artistic licence takes over content and Hollywood ship out turgid patehtic CGI films and expect Joe Public to buy into it.

kiwimumof2boys · 07/01/2015 09:20

Ferris Beullor's day off
American Beauty
Titanic
The Sweetest Thing

JamNan · 07/01/2015 09:21

Dances with Wolves it went on... and on..and on ..
Atonement
War Horse (a travesty after the play)
Robin Hood (Russel Crowe version)
The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings
Broke back Mountain
Cold Mountain (in fact anything with NK and Jude Law)
Jude Law's Alfie
another vote for ALL. of. Harry. Potter
The Horse Whisperer
Da Vinci Code

I haven't watched any of these films to the end.

kiwimumof2boys · 07/01/2015 09:22

Oh yes Criuk you've got M@il was also shite . . .

Roussette · 07/01/2015 09:25

Yes to Gravity too. Seriously. It had all these fantastic reviews and was winner of 7 Academy awards - what are these people on - really it was totally forgettable. And it irritated me beyond belief that Sandra Bullock floated about in the space capsule in her bra and pants.

Also Mamma Mia too. Saw it years after everyone else and just laughed my head off at what crap it was.

Floggingmolly · 07/01/2015 09:26

The Blair Witch Project. Predictable shite.

teejayem · 07/01/2015 09:29

Another vote for gravity. When I find myself not giving an actual fuck about the main character, it's pretty much over for me.

Also, Any Ryan Gosling film with an Arty french electro pop sountrack. Drive and Place beyond the Pines... ugh. And everyone I know RAVED about Drive. I thought it was toss.

Roussette · 07/01/2015 09:37

YY to any Ryan Gosling film. His face annoys me intensely.

American Beauty anyone? Did not get it one bit. Waste of a few hours.

Pirates of the Caribbean - I could barely get through the first one. I hate most sequels anyway so that was it for me.
