Why does it feel like the world is regressing?

With it being short for “typographical error” isn’t there an argument that it should have an apostrophe?

No. 'Typo' is short for 'typographical error', typos is simply the plural when there's more than one of them. "Typo's" would only be valid if it was used as a possessive - not likely to occur in normal use but how about "The typo's entertainment value came from it being a demonstration of Muphry's Law in action".

Ok, that definitely belongs in Pedants' Corner!

so if typo’ can be correct why not typo’s as in plural?

I’d always seen it as an error before today, but now I can’t help but wonder if that’s unfair.

Struggling to find a comparable example (most contractions I can think of are at the start or middle of the word) but if someone in a book was talking about the film cool runnings in a casual manner, would it not be appropriate for their speech to refer to it as “cool runnin’s” as the apostrophe typically indicates where he missing letters are? So singular is runnin’ and plural runnin’s? If the apostrophe is appropriate for singular why not for plural? Normally it’s both. A list of “dos and don’ts” doesn’t suddenly lose the apostrophe in don’t when it’s plural.

@Teamarugula does it matter that the "joke" has been created and popularised by women? Internalised misogyny is as misogynistic as the kind thrown at women by men. It is still perpetuating stupid stereotypes about women.

OutwiththeOutCrowd · 26/06/2024 17:13

Something about this advert just doesn't add up.

Yes, it does matter. Young women are allowed to laugh at themselves and acknowledge illogical behaviour - and indeed to behave illogically!

So where is the “boy math” laughing at the illogical justifications for gadgets, gear and porn?

Or is it just “running like a girl”, “big girl’s blouse”

And who is laughing?

Confused typo' isn't correct.

Typo plural typos, possessive typo's, plural possessive typos' ... just like any other word.

fedupandstuck · 26/06/2024 13:45

Really? That isn't the usage that I've seen of this particular meme. And if it was just that, then why the name? Clearly there's a distinction being made between men and women, with the illogical behaviour being ascribed to "girls". That's straightforward sexism, right there.

Why don't you search it in Instagram or tiktok to see some context?

CrankyMode · 26/06/2024 17:32

Ewwwwwwww. That's really gross. And so very sexist.

Young women are laughing at themselves. This is an entirely young women-driven joke, originating from TikTok. Men don’t need to create parallel trends to women.

BecauseImDonna · 26/06/2024 17:33

I hate the girl math trend. I know what it means and find the whole concept sexist. As women we are better than that.

www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-12565647/amp/What-boy-math-trend.html

'Boy math is being 5ft 10 but suddenly being 6ft 2 when talking to a woman'.

Girl math was, and still is on SM, a way for women to laugh at themselves.

Boy math has ended up as a way for women to point out all of the many ways that men are failing...and for the most part I see men laughing and agreeing with it.

They've both been around for ages.

CrankyMode · 26/06/2024 17:38

No croissant and☕for bimbo but a lipgloss made from harmful chemicals?

KnickerlessParsons · 26/06/2024 17:38

Apart from anything else, it's "maths" not "math" and they can't spell last.

Poor effort Superdrug. 2/10, and that's generous

Another company to boycott.

On what grounds?

CrankyMode · 26/06/2024 17:40

'Boy math is being 5ft 10 but suddenly being 6ft 2 when talking to a woman'.

Oh damn, this is all so naff and stereotypical. How dumb are their target audience?

It was popularised by a TikToker but it was already a thing.

PP has linked to boy math specifically. It's all kinds of things as well, not just height for men and shopping for women. It's actually quite interesting psychological trickery. You can scroll through dozens of comments about 'girl math' and automatically disregard/forget the ones that don't apply to you, but the ones you do relate to are funny. The same with boy math, you just snigger when you think of that one guy you know/used to know that would totally rationalise that way and you ignore the rest.

Boy math is thinking a woman is only after your money when you make minimum wage
Boy math is wanting a woman to spend £££ on her appearance yet you turn up in jeans and an old T-shirt and insist on going halves because 'equality'
Boy math is saying to a woman 'what do you bring to the table' when you live with your parents and don't even own your own fucking table

It's funny. NAMALT but we all know at least 1MLT Grin

PuddlesPityParty · 26/06/2024 17:55

It’s a social media trend aimed at the younger generation. Literally no issue. Suggest you look into the trend to understand it.

are people not allowed to have a little bit of a silly joke and silly fun anymore? Do we have to be serious all the time? Does everything have to be so serious all the time? Ffs.

Scarletttulips · 26/06/2024 14:05

Isn’t ‘lat’ a play on latte?

Thats how I read it, but hey …. Let’s look at spelling rather than the message that girls are dumbing themselves down - a worrying trend.

We tried so hard for woman to be respected for being smart, intelligent, business woman, who can run a company and a home - but now we worship woman being daft.

I read the lat as a play on words too.

fedupandstuck · 26/06/2024 18:00

It's funny? The joke being.., what? That sexism is alive and well, but now recast as "laughing at yourself"? No thanks. I don't recognise any of those stupid behaviours in my attitude to spending, nor see them as general behaviours that women tend to and men not.

What's with this wholesale swallowing of sexist tropes as humour, just because it's popularised on the current favourite social media platform. It's depressing how quickly we seem to have slipped back from pushing against stupid stereotypes.

And no doubt I'm just humourless and out of touch for not finding this hilarious and totally appropriate.

HollyKnight · 26/06/2024 18:02

I don't think middle-aged mums are their target audience with this.

babybirdsmomma · 26/06/2024 18:04

Teamarugula · 26/06/2024 15:08

Girl math isn’t about not being able to do maths, it’s joking about the sometimes questionable ways we justify purchases to ourselves

Exactly this, there is humour in this which seems to enrage some folk. It's lighthearted and should be treated as such. It doesn't reflect anyone's intelligence . It's target market understand the joke so imagine Superdrug will lose no sleep in the customers that are terribly offended boycotting them from now on🤗

fedupandstuck · 26/06/2024 18:33

Those young girls and women will soon enough become "middle aged mums" and perhaps only then reflect on the ageism and sexism that pervaded their youth culture.
