Why does it feel like the world is regressing?

That's reaching!

lots of posters do this when they are commenting on bad grammar/spelling

I assumed it WAS deliberate!!

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 26/06/2024 13:54

MuscariFan · 26/06/2024 13:29

It would be yes, were it a typo. However, as typo's is short for typographical errors, the apostrophe is perfectly sound.

Edited

What? No. Typos is a plural. No apostrophe.

Onand · 26/06/2024 13:57

Clever way of suggesting to buy makeup over ‘buying breakfast out’, because that reinforces good healthy habits doesn’t it. Left the house in a hurry and wanted to grab something on the way to work… then that pops up in your email box…wow

I think the apostrophe was ironic and deliberate…

No, because she defends it as correct when told it isn't.

JaneJeffer · 26/06/2024 11:58

Concealer for breakfast. Yummy.

Surely girls shouldn't be eating breakfast! Makeup is far more important than food!

MrsMiddleMother · 26/06/2024 12:42

'Girl math' is a trend popular on tik tok and social media at the moment, superdrug are just using the term to advertise to their main market; young women. Its really not something to be all uppity about.

Yes but it's an offensive trend that a responsible retailer shouldn't be supporting.

Scarletttulips · 26/06/2024 14:05

Isn’t ‘lat’ a play on latte?

Thats how I read it, but hey …. Let’s look at spelling rather than the message that girls are dumbing themselves down - a worrying trend.

We tried so hard for woman to be respected for being smart, intelligent, business woman, who can run a company and a home - but now we worship woman being daft.

Come on! Having a typo in a comment about checking for typos is a little bit funny!

Muphry's Law never fails to amuse.Grin

With it being short for “typographical error” isn’t there an argument that it should have an apostrophe? Despite typo without being in common use.
I’d compare it to my relative, who I think is a bit bonkers for always writing ‘phone and ‘cello, but I don’t think I could bring myself to say they’re wrong.

Teamarugula · 26/06/2024 14:14

The don’t buy breakfast thing is only weird in as far as surely the target audience of this ad has Club Pret

BirthdayRainbow · 26/06/2024 14:19

Way longer?

Bloody hell such dumbing down shite.

MuscariFan · 26/06/2024 14:21

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 26/06/2024 13:54

What? No. Typos is a plural. No apostrophe.

I know it's a plural. The apostrophe is for the abbreviation.

I'm not defending it, in that it isn't my post (I'm just bored this afternoon) 😂. It's just not actually incorrect.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2024 14:24

With it being short for “typographical error” isn’t there an argument that it should have an apostrophe?

No. 'Typo' is short for 'typographical error', typos is simply the plural when there's more than one of them. "Typo's" would only be valid if it was used as a possessive - not likely to occur in normal use but how about "The typo's entertainment value came from it being a demonstration of Muphry's Law in action".

Ok, that definitely belongs in Pedants' Corner!

scoobs321 · 26/06/2024 14:28

I got that email, read the subject line, rolled my eyes and unsubscribed from their mailing list.

But the apostrophe, as apostrophes do in abbreviations, is there to replace the bracketed piece of typo(graphical error)s. Possessives have nothing to do with it. It is perfectly correct if you could be arsed to use it. I wouldn't personally, but I also wouldn't pick someone up for using it and think I was clever.

(As above. Not my post that used it originally and really don't care LOL.)

Edited because I can't type myself this afternoon, it seems.

ErrolTheDragon · 26/06/2024 14:33

Nope, because 'typo' is now a word in its own right. Grin

fedupandstuck · 26/06/2024 14:33

Isn't "typo" a clipped word, not an abbreviation? So an apostrophe would be incorrect. Like hippo from hippopotamus.

ThreeEggOmlette · 26/06/2024 14:55

Urgh, I'm glad someone else has picked up on this load of reductive shite from Superdrug.

Dont go to yoga, buy a tub of face cream!

Fuck that noise.
Go to MORE yoga or gym. Or a running club, whatever floats your boat.
Get off a screen, meet people, reconnect with your body, spend time on your health and wellbeing and ignore the messages from cosmetic peddlars that investing cash in your outward appearance is more important than investing cash in your health.

And the people defending it on 'duh! They only said don't buy breakfast OUT ffs' the message is insidious.
It's a direct comparison of food or cosmetics for three of the four 'girl math' examples in that email - you honestly think that doesn't send a subliminal message?

Lord. Can you tell that email triggered some kind of repressed rage in me? 😂

coxesorangepippin · 26/06/2024 14:59

Assuming girls are dumb much?

SonicTheHodgeheg · 26/06/2024 15:02

WifeOfTiresias · 26/06/2024 14:01

Yes but it's an offensive trend that a responsible retailer shouldn't be supporting.

Why is it offensive to suggest that skipping breakfast out means that you could buy makeup instead? If Superdrug said skip breakfast then you’d have a point but this isn’t as stupid as the saying that a Netflix subscription and odd Starbucks are preventing you from having a house deposit. Eating breakfast at home rather than out saves money and may be healthier depending on your normal breakfast order and what you have at home. Plus skipping breakfast out to save £7 is an achievable goal if that’s what you would like to buy instead.

Teamarugula · 26/06/2024 15:08

Girl math isn’t about not being able to do maths, it’s joking about the sometimes questionable ways we justify purchases to ourselves

DojaPhat · 26/06/2024 15:11

Offensive perhaps because all the ways you could crowbar 'girl math' into an ad seems to paint women and girls as absolutely hopeless at life. Whether that be forgoing breakfast at Pret to buy blusher or buying a ridiculously priced handbag because it works out cheap per use.

Who we? Not me. And this is sexist, that "girls" use questionable methods to justify purchases. And not "boys".

It’s literally a trend that young women have created about themselves, to poke fun at their own behaviour, in a lighthearted way - a concept MN is unfamiliar with, I know

Clever you, you know maths words. Has nothing to do with the joke though
