Rebel Wilson has had her first child via surrogate

Rebel Wilson (who I love) has announced via IG that she’s had her first baby via surrogate this week. Lovely for her to have a baby.

But the topic of surrogacy rears its ugly head and once again I’m wondering why so many rich and famous women choose to have a surrogate. Rebel has had significant publicity with her weight struggles and is currently in a relationship with a woman (she doesn’t name her as co-parent).

she hasn’t publicly said why she used a surrogate but I feel a bit uncomfortable by this as being a step yet again

Superb!

OhHolyJesus · 17/11/2022 10:16

This just doesn't compare to Bindel, but like Grazia, it shows there is plenty out there to tell women that we shouldn't criticise Rebel and her choices, as women are allowed to make choices and we should support these choices whatever they happen to be.

Don't be mean women, back in your box you go...

Meanwhile Grazia's take on it is that it is just another example of mum shaming 🙄 graziadaily.co.uk/life/parenting/lets-stop-judging-rebel-wilson-for-going-to-a-party-when-she-has-a-newborn/

This annoyes me to no end.
This is not judging a mother for her choices.
Rebel Wilson is not a mother, she has only acquired a baby.
If she really wanted to be a mother she would be bonding with the baby.

MrsJamin · 18/11/2022 15:46

100%, she has not shown in any way that she is the mother of the child - apart from her legal guardian.

GenderCriticalTrumpets · 22/11/2022 20:58

I cant say this anywhere else in my life other than anonymously online. I am an adoptee and surrogacy makes me feel so sad. I'm recently reunited with my birth family and it has all gone really well, like I couldn't have wished for better, but the damage done to me through adoption trauma feels irreparable. Even if the baby doesn't remember their birth Mum it is a loss they will grieve for their whole lives.

RobinRobinMouse · 23/11/2022 06:11

@GenderCriticalTrumpets Absolutely admire you for sharing your feelings here and fair enough that you feel that way, but as a fellow adoptee I haven't experienced any of the trauma you speak of so I don't think it is a given that all such babies will have a negative experience. Adoption can be very positive.

Do those who think surrogacy is wrong, thinks egg donation is wrong (genuine, non goady question)?

GoingOnce · 25/11/2022 23:22

I do. I don’t think any human body parts should be bought or sold, but particularly the ones that create life.

FannyCann · 25/11/2022 23:26

The thing is it's not usually a donation. Young women are targeted to sell their eggs and harm their health in the process.

FannyCann · 25/11/2022 23:34

Check out some of the TikTok from this stand up comic who campaigns against the fertility industry. She was born as a result of sperm donation, I think her father was a doctor who fraudulently used his own sperm.

Here she is on recruiting egg donors in college campuses.

Here's a photo journal of one egg donor who found out about ovarian hyper stimulation syndrome the hard way.

Delphinium20 · 26/11/2022 03:10

I'm in the States and my daughter was first advertised to sell her eggs when she was 15! The algorithms picked her out after a college internet search and suddenly she was bombarded with ads to 'give the gift of life' and 'get a vacation to Europe'. I was utterly disgusted by this advertising to a child. Don't let the UK go down this route like the US has. Young women are exploited to risk their health and future fertility for wealthy, privileged men and women. I find this repulsive. I follow a woman on Facebook who sold her eggs and when she wanted to have children of her own found out that her ovaries were damaged and she became infertile. She was also lied to about being able to contact the families in the future. She knows she has twins out there, a boy and a girl, but the family has chosen to deny contact details despite her wish to have an open relationship. Anyone who buys eggs has very likely abused a young women's naïveté and vulnerability to commission a baby.

Delphinium20 · 26/11/2022 03:15

Not to mention, these egg 'donation' sites love to spout misleading health information.

They use #traveling to market to young women and call it an 'egg donation journey'.

your "donation" is compensated at a minimum of $8000

I was appalled to see Wilson parading a newborn torn from her mother. Anyone engaging in this child trafficking, and knowingly causing a primal trauma to mother and baby, should be shunned. They've banned this trade in India for good reason: we don't even inflict this trauma on puppies!

OhHolyJesus · 15/02/2023 19:12

Rebel Wilson reveals that this child was a second attempt and she had another 'surrogate' so at least two women were involved and not only are neither of them interviewed but only one is mentioned in the briefest way and with no consideration for her feelings on her miscarriage.

"I tried with one surrogate to have the baby and sadly the embryo miscarried, which is really, like, you get so excited when it takes and luckily I didn't make it public because that would have been even worse because you'd have to say it didn't work out. It was really sad," Wilson said on the Life Uncut podcast. "I was mourning that at the time. But then to have a second embryo I only had two and to have it implanted and that to go well."

Badger1970 · 15/02/2023 19:42

She really needs to not talk about this, because she just makes herself more and more unlikeable as she does so.

Apparently the nanny "encouraged" her to go out partying less than a week after the baby had been handed over to her and she felt "mom shamed" for doing so.

No mention whatsoever of the woman who went through the miscarriage. We don't even know if she's okay.

Maybe the nanny has a sense that Wilson doesn't know how to care for a newborn and she was just trying to get her out of the way so she could better care for baby.

WeWereInParis · 15/02/2023 20:03

I don't agree with surrogacy. But we do not need to know whether this woman is ok, she is entitled to her privacy. Maybe she requested that Rebel Wilson not talk about her and her medical information in public.
Maybe she isn't ok and wishes she could talk publicly, but we don't know that and I don't think it would be that surprising for her to actually just want to not be talked about.
As I said, I don't agree with what Wilson has done, but it's really not her place to speak about whether this woman is ok or not. And she would be criticised if she did so.

aweegc · 15/02/2023 20:18

If you want to pay for a child and have someone else bring it up (nanny), why not sponsor a child?

They'd actually get a lot more positive publicity from sponsoring 1000 children to finish their schooling in a country where poverty prevents children from finishing school, then paying a surrogate and a nanny.

But that wouldn't quench the thirst of their egos.

RedToothBrush · 15/02/2023 20:21

That BBC story about the uncaring celeb who ordered a surrogacy then it didn't turn out is stuck in my head.

MrsJamin · 17/02/2023 06:25

The way Rebel avoids talking about either surrogate mother in a human sense is so odd.
