Rebel Wilson has had her first child via surrogate

Rebel Wilson (who I love) has announced via IG that she’s had her first baby via surrogate this week. Lovely for her to have a baby.

But the topic of surrogacy rears its ugly head and once again I’m wondering why so many rich and famous women choose to have a surrogate. Rebel has had significant publicity with her weight struggles and is currently in a relationship with a woman (she doesn’t name her as co-parent).

she hasn’t publicly said why she used a surrogate but I feel a bit uncomfortable by this as being a step yet again

And buying and selling babies.

VioletLemon · 13/11/2022 20:58

Thanks for expressing what I feel so well.

ArabellaScott · 13/11/2022 21:48

Hopefully baby has a 24/7 nanny who it can bond with and feel safe.

Yes. TBH, a good, caring nanny will be a better option than Rebel, by the look of it.

JohnsShirt · 14/11/2022 00:48

It's the best can be hoped for at this point.
Poor child.
I said way up thread that I'm adopted at a v young age, and I absolutely feel it.
Obviously adoption and surrogacy are different, but in the case of being removed from the only Mum you've ever known, it absolutely causes issues.

RobinRobinMouse · 14/11/2022 05:07

I was also adopted and have a very strong bond with my parents. I absolutely believe it was the right thing for me and don't have any of the issues pp mentions. Yes of course surrogacy and adoption are different, but I don't think it is fair to assume it is the same for all.

Hopefully this baby will have no memory of any of this and will grow up wanted and loved. I don't think it is wrong to go out sometimes if you have a new baby, it's not how I did things, but many women choose to and should not be judged for that.

MrsJamin · 14/11/2022 05:54

It's not about judging per se, Rebel is showing a pack of understanding of how to create a bond with her daughter. To the baby, Rebel is a stranger and they will not create a solid bond if she's off to two parties a night. It's one thing to leave your baby with your partner for an evening but not this early on if you don't have a bond already. Rebel is not hiding what she is prioritising over her daughter: her celebrity lifestyle it doesn't bode well.

MrsJamin · 14/11/2022 05:55

*lack of understanding

OhHolyJesus · 14/11/2022 07:47

I don't think I'd use a surrogate

^Use.

A 'surrogate'.
^
If anyone is a 'surrogate' (mother) in this situation it's Rebel, or more accurately it's the nanny Rebel pays to care for the newborn baby she bought. It is the nanny who is a substitute or it deputising for the woman who gave birth who is therefore the mother of the child. It is the nanny who cuddles and feeds the child and it is the nanny's eyes the child will gaze into when feeding and forming a bind with a primary carer. The same goes for Khloe Kardashian who did the same.

Using humans to your own end went out of fashion when slavery was abolished. The story of Abraham, Sarah and Hagar in the Bible neglects to mention the fact that a powerful and wealthy man raped his female slave so to impregnate her and take and give the baby to his infertile wife.

I like to think we have moved on from biblical times and when we bought and sold humans, wishful thinking perhaps, but let's be honest and accurate and call it what it is at least.

Brilliant article from the plain-speaking Julie Bindel.

She posted a video on her Instagram saying that she’s “crushing motherhood”… because she put a baby swing together.
I guess she thinks that’s all it takes…

Lottapianos · 14/11/2022 16:46

'She posted a video on her Instagram saying that she’s “crushing motherhood”… because she put a baby swing together.'

Dear god, what a fucking eejit

Well said Julie Bindel (as always)

MrsJamin · 14/11/2022 17:11

She took that down quick enough, I can't see it!

Clymene · 14/11/2022 17:21

That's a great article by Bindel

As a surrogate pregnancy is a high risk pregnancy it concerns me the cost to the NHS.

It concerns me that wealthy american surrogacy agencies will be feasting their greedy eyes on the UK in that the costs would be cheaper as the surrogate if i the UK would get "free" healthcare allowing them to maximise their profits from their USA clients.

The law commission did a review of this, the questions were selectively geared to those who were

  1. Potential/Commissioning parents
2 surrogates 3 Other law makers

Not sure if they sought views from medical professionals. It was very difficult to respond to the multiple choice though have worked with many traumatised children including those adopted at birth.

Really concerned as other posters have said that it becomes normalised. Urrgh.

FannyCann · 15/11/2022 08:25

Not sure if they sought views from medical professionals

They absolutely did not. I attended a public consultation event where medical questions were asked and one of the lawyers from the LC got frustrated with a tenacious questioner and said "We're lawyers not doctors".

If you look at the long list of organisations and people consulted at the beginning of the consultation document the absence of the RCOG and other bodies was a glaring omission. There are many people with the title Dr in the listing - I googled them all and the vast majority have a doctorate in law or social sciences with a very small smattering of IVF specialists.

FannyCann · 15/11/2022 08:28

Extraordinary Conceptions are a surrogacy agency with a high profile on Instagram and TikTok.
They are advertising for surrogate mothers for their VIP programme.
To qualify the woman must have had no more than five LSCS and/or 8 pregnancies.
These women are high risk before they even get pregnant. And of course in the U.K. the NHS picks up the care of these complex cases.

FannyCann · 15/11/2022 08:35

Bother. Screen shot not posting. I'll try again or post the link if this doesn't work.

And while I scroll through their Instagram I see they are advertising for a California single woman to be a surrogate mother to someone in South Korea and travel to South Korea to do this. People trafficking.

Gosh that's grim @FannyCann

They can't even be bothered to do a spellcheck

Whereisthehugeteddybear · 15/11/2022 10:13

Yeah make the "elite VIP" intended parents' dreams come true (you'll get even more kudos for carrying twins) while risking your own health, and potentially life and possibly leaving your own kids without a mother. Nice.
But all wrapped up in emotional fluffy language calling you a special angel

OhHolyJesus · 15/11/2022 17:19

Another article on surrogacy referring to Wilson.

Meanwhile Grazia's take on it is that it is just another example of mum shaming 🙄 graziadaily.co.uk/life/parenting/lets-stop-judging-rebel-wilson-for-going-to-a-party-when-she-has-a-newborn/

The author was recently a judge in Amnesty awards and we all know how much Amnesty care about women Hmm

Labnehi · 16/11/2022 10:24

When someone feels "shamed" perhaps its because they have done something shameful, and they know it, and are ashamed.

Beefcurtains79 · 17/11/2022 06:55

Grazia is an absolute joke, it hates women these days.
We have to ‘be kind’ at all costs according to them, it’s propaganda at this point.
