I think this will be interesting. I'm actually quite keen to hear from Michelle Dewberry.

I'm not big on ex-Apprentice winners but I remember her and appreciated her tweet about being a mother.

I'm also a bit sick of the BBC tbh and I'm for variety in broadcasting so will see what it's like.

Watching now. Love Nana!

NonnyMouse1337 · 14/06/2021 08:19

The launch was alright. Some technical problems were to be expected. Lighting and sound was poor and overall set seemed cheap. Was totally surprised to see Buttons on it! Grin

I'm happy to give it a few weeks to see how it goes and what it shapes up into. It is good to have diverse news sources and I agree with their stated aims. There is no such thing as an unbiased news source. It's always important to keep in mind what angle a news source is coming from when reading or watching their stuff. I've realised over the years it's equally important to do this for left/liberal sources as well.

I'm going to tune in to Andrew Doyle's programme on Saturdays. I think it's at 4pm. See what that is like.

Like any other TV channel, there will be some presenters that I like or think are ok and others that I can't stand.

SoapboxFox · 14/06/2021 08:38

I think it will be a breath of fresh air and am looking forward to it.

ArabellaScott · 14/06/2021 08:47

Fighting bbc bias is why they've set it up but no one is immune.

Yes, absolutely. Like Nonny says, no such thing as an unbiased source, just a question of identifying and recognising bias. I suppose openness about it from the broadcaster would help, but even then, do you trust what they say?

I think the BBC have an almost impossible task, really, and I think they are probably doing best when they are pissing off all factions equally.

WarriorN · 14/06/2021 09:02

I do too actually. They are duty bound to give "balance." That will mean that many people will not happy. They are also a tool of the government.

This can be useful; CBeebies is excellent and are producing a lot of content that supports early years parenting I noticed, as a result of lockdown.

Obviously in other ways it doesn't allow certain discussions to be that open.

WarriorN · 14/06/2021 09:03

Hopefully with recent developments certain cbbc programmes will not be shown or recommissioned.

User135644 · 14/06/2021 09:09

Is that the BBC that Andrew Neil was the leading interviewer and political presenter of for years? Alongside Paxman (a card carrying Tory).

There's not much of a diversity of opinion among those presenters. There's nobody even vaguely on the left.

DelilahDingleberry · 14/06/2021 09:10

Which particular cbeebies/cbbc shows @WarriorN

CardinalLolzy · 14/06/2021 09:11

I can barely stand to watch any news - usually if i switch on a bbc news programme they spend valuable time asking what random members of the public think. Still! In 2021!
I want data and informed analysis with links to full research where appropriate. And no trolling, whipping up hate or deliberate winding up groups of ppl.

CardinalLolzy · 14/06/2021 09:11

So although GB news sounds dreadful, do let me know if it ticks my boxes!

WarriorN · 14/06/2021 09:16

I've completely forgotten the names but there was one from Australia around a trans girl in school. Another documentary about a young girl dealing with the transition of her mother, both obviously in a "you should accept this" and ignore your own feelings and boundaries vein.

WarriorN · 14/06/2021 09:18

"First day" and "when mum becomes dad."

Obviously they provide balance but I'd expect a jolly show about detransitioning too in that case.

Which isn't jolly.

OvaHere · 14/06/2021 09:58

The balance seems to be coming from the guests so far. I've dipped in and out in the last hour and John Barnes gave them a hard time over racism in football and they've just had a segment on about immigration and migrant camps and an Amnesty bloke blew up the narrative they were trying to aim for.

The presenters don't seem to have figured out how to respond to guests pushing back on them. They just sort of smile and end the segment rather than engage in debate. It feels a bit awkward at the minute. Like watching a Facebook argument where one side eventually just puts the other on mute.

It's Talkradio but on the TV.

Sugar had a pushback at that Wootton fool over Brexit and he just changed the subject.

There's a market for news channel with lively debate and a plurality of opinions. GB News seems like an echo chamber. They'll pay lip service to OFCom regulations and thus will have to have on opposing views, but there's little interest in actual debate. The likes of Wootton just want to reinforce their own opinions.

KimikosNightmare · 14/06/2021 10:36

@stumbledin

Nice bit of ageism, sexism and racism on display there.

Dont be so silly. Its a recognition of who is the dominant class in this country and the problems they create for those who aren't part of their elite group.

Lets face it if the Voice and Eastern Eye had got together to launch a news channel no venture capitalists would have come forward to fund it.

To we really need any more of these smug eletes drowning the rest of us out with their smug complacancy.

You need to examine your own prejudices. Writing off Andrew Neil as "pale, male and stale" says far more about your own blinkered, narrow- minded attitudes than about him.

It does, but also the idea Neil is some sort of anti-establishment maverick is just as pathetic. He's been at the heart of the mainstream media for 40 years.

I personally haven't done that but Neil is an excellent journalist and has been for many years. It's been a joy over the years watching him eviscerate ill- prepared politicians across the political spectrum.
User135644 · 14/06/2021 10:57

@KimikosNightmare I agree, he was a very good journalist and interviewer on the BBC, but he's passing himself off as something he's not in marketing this channel.

Then a big monologue at 8pm about how they'll engage in robust debates and everything will be fact checked, no fake news etc. He almost had me fooled until about 10 minutes of watching Dan Wootton from The Sun peddling nonsense.

Childrenofthestones · 14/06/2021 13:05
@OhHolyJesus

This is UK Fox News.
Don’t watch this nonsense
No, that's right, don't watch this nonsense, don't make your own mind up, nothing to see here, move along.
It may be shite or it maybe good, time will tell, but I'll watch it and make my own mind up if that's ok.

User135644 · 14/06/2021 13:12

It's more modeled off Fox/the other American networks with the talk show style, it just so happens that the bulk of presenters are on the right and are not on the left, which is why it'll be deemed more Fox than CNN.

Dan Wootton is already staking a claim to be the Tucker Carlson of GB News.

Justjoinedforthis · 14/06/2021 13:21

I hate the term ‘woke’. I am leftwing, GC, very anti-cancel culture, but the term really annoys me - I wonder do the other feminists on here who complain about the ‘woke brigade’ realize that they themselves would be called ‘woke’ for, for example, taking offence at sexist adverts, and calling out sexism by many people?

Me too, I've moaned about it enough on here :) To be 'woke' you're politically aware which I would class myself as - more than the people that want to handwave away difficult discussions about what not having a definition of the word 'woman' any more, etc etc.

It's a handy lazy word I suppose.

TheVanguardSix · 14/06/2021 13:30

What happens if you watch Fox News? Is it like an infectious disease, do bits of your brain fall off?

Well... yes, is the long and short of it.

NonnyMouse1337 · 14/06/2021 14:23
