I think this will be interesting. I'm actually quite keen to hear from Michelle Dewberry.

I'm not big on ex-Apprentice winners but I remember her and appreciated her tweet about being a mother.

twitter.com/michelledewbs/status/1400721389854810114?s=21

I'm also a bit sick of the BBC tbh and I'm for variety in broadcasting so will see what it's like.

Argh bloody phone has done me a lawyer's apostrophe there, sorry.

EmbarrassingAdmissions

How can you criticise the channel before it has started broadcasting?

I am contemplating my experience of Andrew Neil and Piers Morgan both of whom have many years of involvement in media. I base my reaction to the channel on those figureheads. I would have similar reservations about a news channel with figureheads of (say) James O'Brien and Owen Jones.
ScreamingMeMe · 13/06/2021 12:32
Stop Funding Hate are not keen.

Hmm

Andrew Neil has already fought those totalitarian tossers off once.

I've never forgotten them attacking the Mail because Littlejohn wrote a column defending black lesbian Linda Bellos. In which he acknowledged that he probably didn't have many areas of agreement with her. Yes, Richard Littlejohn is more tolerant than Stop Funding Hate.

OvaHere · 13/06/2021 12:37

Piers Morgan isn't involved at this stage. Seems likely he might be at some point but I could actually see him and Neil clashing - both large personalities. You can't name him as a figurehead at this stage because he isn't part of this venture yet.

Helleofabore · 13/06/2021 12:39

@Erikrie

You do know that you can watch things that don't confirm your existing bias and nothing bad happens, don't you?

Considering other possibilities and points of view is harmful. It's important to stick to the prescribed list of suitable viewing only. Otherwise our brains might explode in to millions of little pieces. This has been known to happen when people think about too many things at once. Or something. That's what I heard would happen anyway. I've checked the approved viewing list and this is rated as not suitable. It's just not worth risking it. ☹️

You are right! That is why it is so vital that everything is pre-screened and disseminated into safe sentences and point of views. I would hate for my brain to explode if I had to apply my own critical thinking to anything. I am very grateful for public service that so many influencers do. Shock
Erikrie · 13/06/2021 12:40

In that case, GB News must be doing something right.

Absolutely

lady69 · 13/06/2021 12:41

Andrew Neil doesn't put up with any shit from politicians and runs rings around them because he is way cleverer than they are. For that reason i hope his venture is a success. Look at BBC News or Channel 4 News and Sky - woefully inept. There is a real need for this channel to mix things up if nothing else. The reeing about it suggests it is already doing just that. Good.

sergeilavrov · 13/06/2021 14:36

@Justfedupofthis Government media of a country that funds terror; as a result of this bias it can only be viewed as the propaganda arm of the Qatari government. The English language is bad, the Arabic language coverage is banned in some places due to how extreme. Their support of the Muslim Brotherhood and associated groups has led to lots of problems in the region.

They have historically glorified terrorists and called them martyrs; downplay genocides; they’ve even been called out by Amnesty International for fake reporting of war crimes to further Qatari ambition in North Africa. Ultimately they don’t research properly, and pick sides. I’m all for consuming a range of media, but for that to be effective, being aware of biases and problems is key.

While I watch AJ for work purposes, I don’t have it in my home as I don’t want my children to hear some of the pro terror views.

NannyAndJohn · 13/06/2021 14:41

Say what you like about Fox News, but their commentators know what a woman is.

I never thought I'd be nodding along to the likes of Tucker Carlson.

stumbledin · 13/06/2021 16:56

nauticant - I've started a thread on that article but no share option. So will post your archive link okay?

And to whoever said about Al Jazeera - as i explained they are one of the few news (note the word NEWS) along with RT who actually report events in Europe.

We are so smug about being an island off the coast of the rest of Europe that we are happy to be fed gratuitous flippancies from the US and remain ignorant about our nearest neighbours.

the only time we get anything from Europi is if Jon Snow can persuade C4 that they really should pay for him to go by Eurostar to Paris. A totally self indulgent jolly.

Thanks to entertainment and social media most people in this country to only take notice of the US. And its not as thought any of us Brits who are too lazy to learn another language need bother, because it seems you can turn up with a microphone in nearly any part of Europe and find someone to interview who will be able to do so in perfect English.

this channel is just a job for the boys. Most chats shows now have commentators who are people already in the media, its just a gravey train. And then they report on the rows they have had with each other as though that is news.

And we the audience have just become like the people who went to the Roman Games to shout and heckle fromt the side lines.

ScreamingMeMe · 13/06/2021 17:08

I don't know how CNN escapes the same type of criticism that Fox News gets (sarcasm; I do really).

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/CNN_controversies

I wonder if Tucker Carlson would have got away with this?

www.google.com/amp/s/amp.cnn.com/cnn/2021/06/10/media/jeffrey-toobin-returns-cnn/index.html

Anyway I'm keeping an open mind about GB News. At the least, it'll be interesting to see what people that I probably don't align with politcally have to say. (And I do believe they should be allowed to say it.)

stumbledin · 13/06/2021 17:20

Someone asked earlier, and it may have already been answered, but if not these are the channels it will broadcast from:

Its Freeview number will be 236, meaning it will come after (in order) BBC News, BBC Parliament, Sky News, RT and Al Jazeera. It will be channel 216 on Freesat.

It will be available in HD on Sky channel number 515 and Virgin Media 626.

SunshineCake · 13/06/2021 17:21

Ok. Stupid question alert. How do I find it on the TV guide please ?

OhHolyJesus · 13/06/2021 17:22

@NannyAndJohn

I never thought I'd be nodding along to the likes of Tucker Carlson.

Nor I, for Piers Morgan, but here we are.

From experience, I know the BBC is held in high regard in other countries though I'm not sure that's still the case, and because the BBC's reputation precedes itself the ego comes with it.

There is a certain snobbery within, a self-assured attitude that they can do no wrong. The Defund the BBC groups are not listened to and the discussion around the license fee and charter with the govt is framed as being a threat from the govt, not about their offer or the neglect of their audience. The BBC always wants to appeal to younger audiences and position themselves as current and relevant, but things have moved on.

Even without other free-view channels there is YT, Netflix and other subscription services.

Brand New Tube and now GB have formed. It's not hard to see how the once mainstream, relied-upon font of all knowledge can be replaced because they have become complacent.

If diversity and inclusion are the thoughts of the day let's have it all.

I would imagine you might need to go back into setup and tell it to run auto-tune again to look for new channels.

I just went on the TV guide on sky, went to news channels and it was there.
stumbledin · 13/06/2021 19:10

SunshineCake - If you cant find it on your tv guide, depending on how you recieve your tv programmes, ie freeview, virgin or whatever, just use the keypad on your remote control from the numbers I posted above.

Mrstwiddle · 13/06/2021 19:52

If you’re abroad there’s an app where you can watch it live, I’m very optimistic that this will an improvement on what we currently have.

Mrstwiddle · 13/06/2021 19:53

play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.gbnews.app

There’s also one for apple.

Tibtom · 13/06/2021 19:58

@TrainedByCats

Since heavy use of union flags tends to be used by groups opposed to people living in the UK who don't fit the white British demographic based on the branding I’d assume it’s not for me
This seems to be more of 'putting down the British and all things British' that is driving the disaffection with left and centrist politics. Why shouldn't a British program use the British Flag?
Congressdingo · 13/06/2021 20:10
@OhHolyJesus

This is UK Fox News.
Don’t watch this nonsense
Well yeah ok, I won't watch it just because you said, oh wait no that's not how it works.

Are you alright hun?

What a strange thing to post on an open forum. Maybe you can tell your family and mates to not do something, but on here it's mostly adults who dont know you and can make up,their own mind by watching it and deciding how terrible it is for themselves.

SunshineCake · 13/06/2021 22:04

Thank you to those who answered me. Apparently we don't have the right channel.

NotTheFunKindOfFeminist · 13/06/2021 22:06

It looks like Dan Wooton is going for the panto villain role.

The lighting is terrible.
