Both absolute legends.
AIBU to wish I followed the same path?
At 45 I'm past it.

@Youshouldbestrongerthanme Trump became president at 70, who only knows what you could achieve in the next 25 years !

Trump really should NOT have become president though, at 70 or any other age. He is not fit for the job.

Also, I don't understand why some people - like Trump, and Biden, and Reagan - waited so long to go for these big important vital jobs. Trump is nearly 80 now, and really needs to be taken out of The White house.

.

This whole thread is bizarre. And also slightly concerning.

I agree. I think the whole thread is in very poor taste.

@Itsthedramamick These guys are incredible. But I doubt of use now.

What makes you think that?

Dymaxion · 06/03/2026 21:38

Yes.amd look what a total dick he is!!!

Agreed, but look at what he has achieved as a total dick and imagine what you could achieve in that time-frame as a non total dick, the possibilities are endless.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 21:38

@Itsthedramamick They're useful in that they won't tell you that what you are thinking of or wanting to do isn'tthe right thing to do. I respect that massively. Brilliant listeners but won't adivse.

@mumofoneAloneandwell I've left it too late, haven't I? That's probably why I admire them. At their prime ❤️

Left what too late?

@Dymaxion He was also loaded!!

Hello OP, we are really sorry to hear you are feeling this way.
We hope you don't mind, but when these threads are flagged up to us we usually add a link to our Mental Health Resources. You can also go to the Samaritans website or email them on [email protected]. Support from other Mumsnetters is great and we really hope you will be able to take some comfort from your fellow posters, but as other MNers will tell you, it's really a good idea to seek RL help and support as well.
We also like to remind everyone that, although we're awed daily by the astonishing support our members give each other through life's trickier twists and turns, we'd always caution anyone never to give more of themselves to another poster, emotionally or financially, than they can afford to spare.
We are going to move this thread to the Mental Health section shortly

He was also loaded!!

Or was able to hoodwink a lot of people into thinking he was ?

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter, what do you want your life to look like ? What makes you happy ? Focus on that, but at the same time keep in mind that the most unlikely orange immigrant born bouffant hairdo on the plant can get the number one job, and you probably out perform them on just about every scale of civility and decorum.

Screamingabdabz · 06/03/2026 21:13

Totally agree. Karen Carpenter’s voice was simply beautiful by any standard. Amy Winehouse? Well I’m still amazed she has such a following, she is a tribute pub act who affected a fake husky voice by copying the sound of the records her dad listened to and just got lucky.

What rubbish - she was influence by that style but created her own unique style - all musicians are influenced by whats come before

omg you are really uneducated about music - pub act - i dont 5hink so

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 21:49

@CoralMumsnet Thanks. They really are great (but past it now for me after many years on). Definitely lovely and caring people who are so kind to give up their own time for free ❤️

To be fair, neither of thrm had " natural " voices, both sang in falsetto.
I loved Karen's voice but really didn't like Amy's which seemed very strained.
Worth remembering that Susan Dhoyle, was about 47 when she was on BGT.
Have you thought about working part time in pubs and working mens clubs? I've seen some amazing talent and such absolutely dire acts.
You should try it, you dont need a lot of kit and most places have their own PA so you just need to hook up your mixer and mic.

Karen carpenter was def not falsetto 🤣🤣

Yeahk I think @Catsarenottheonlypets is getting Karen confused with Barry Gibb! 😆 Karen had a deep, low voice. Amy had quite a deep, low voice too.

I think you mean contralto @Catsarenottheonlypets Smile

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 21:56

@Dymaxion Well I gave birth to two absolutely beautiful children. I never really got to be their mum though.

OP posts:
Dymaxion · 06/03/2026 21:58

Is there something that has triggered these feelings and made you post @Youshouldbestrongerthanme ?
Can't say I am an expert in the human condition and my life is not one to be exemplified, but you know, you are probably a lot more fabulous than me, being able to hold a note of any description is not something I can even begin to aspire to, musically I am the one with a moustache banging a stick on a goat skin, in the corner of an empty pub, deep in the wilds of rural anywhere, only tolerated because someone once fancied my sister.

Dymaxion · 06/03/2026 22:08

Well I gave birth to two absolutely beautiful children. I never really got to be their mum though.

@Youshouldbestrongerthanme I doubt that was because you didn't want to be.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 22:12

@Dymaxion Oh no - absolutely. I would have died for them. Still would.

@TheIceBear Amy didn't die of drug addiction.

She had massive struggles with drug addiction . Clearly

TheIceBear · 06/03/2026 22:25

ThatSourGobstopper · 06/03/2026 20:42

Yes she was. Awful whiney voice and that godawful song Valerie. 😖
Karen Carpenter on the other hand was and will always be a legend. Beautiful voice, beautiful soul. No comparison between her and Amy Whinehouse. None whatsoever!

I agree as well. Never liked her voice or her songs. I do think she was talented though, just not to my taste personally

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 21:30

@Dollymylove Oh I agree - embarrassing I don't even own my own home! I do work btw, but it's not well paid. I teach children who can't access mainstream education due to many different reasons. Love my job but most people could do it so it's not exactly a skill. Need to make more £!

I do the same job actually and believe me, most people could not do it

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 07/03/2026 10:25

@BiscoffCheesecakes But considering I could be earning a huge amount more if was actually classroom teaching I'm not actually achieving my potential really. Don't get me wrong - I love my job and I love working with the kids I get to work with, but as someone who has been a qualified teacher for over 20 years I don't feel it's brilliant career-wise.
I try to hold on to the positives - a dad of one of my Y9 students the other day told me I'd been a " total gamechanger" in his son's life - but then I remember I need to somehow pay the bills.

@XenoBitch Getting help isn't going to magically give me genuine friends and family unfortunately. Perhaps this is what Amy and Karen were also lacking?

That would not have saved them. They could only have saved themselves

BiscoffCheesecakes · 07/03/2026 13:30

Jellytotsapplepie · 06/03/2026 20:40

Gosh i don't think its self inflicted - neither asked to be in the traumatic family environments that left then with problems (different for richard being male). Not a choice at all

i think about both of them, lots of cultural refs out there still

gosh britney spears could have been anyone, not so with amy and karen - female drummers are very rare

I'm sure we've all experienced stuff in our lives that have affected us negatively but in the case of KC & AW it seems the pressures of fame were too much in the end

The pressure of both being criticised for their weight when very young probably didn't help. Not so much to do with fame, more society's attitude towards women and girls.
