Both absolute legends.
AIBU to wish I followed the same path?
At 45 I'm past it.

Romanticising early death is sick, imo. I'm older than you are and don't feel ready to die, much less envious of anyone who died young. I don't expect menopause will change that, either. What an odd thing to say! Do you not know anyone older than you who still loves life? I've known people in their 80s who were still thankful for every new day they saw. You don't have to be young, beautiful, wealthy, or talented to find joy and value in life.

@XenoBitch I don't want help but thank you.

It's not what either of them did. So it's irrelevant.

@CakeMeHomeIveSeenEnough Menopause will change a lot, but I can imagine with family and friends it's do-able.

Romanticising the early deaths of desperately unhappy women is a cunt’s move.

HTH.

Yes she was. Awful whiney voice and that godawful song Valerie. 😖
Karen Carpenter on the other hand was and will always be a legend. Beautiful voice, beautiful soul. No comparison between her and Amy Whinehouse. None whatsoever!

Totally agree. Karen Carpenter’s voice was simply beautiful by any standard. Amy Winehouse? Well I’m still amazed she has such a following, she is a tribute pub act who affected a fake husky voice by copying the sound of the records her dad listened to and just got lucky.

@XenoBitch I don't want help but thank you.

Then what is the real point of this thread?

Firefly1987 · 06/03/2026 21:14

I used to feel the same OP. Actually still do but I realised there's no getting off the ride (at least not easily) so am stuck with it. Now I'm just a decade along and wasted most of it thinking I wouldn't be here by now so it wouldn't matter. I get how you feel though Flowers

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 21:15

@XenoBitch Getting help isn't going to magically give me genuine friends and family unfortunately. Perhaps this is what Amy and Karen were also lacking?

@Muffsies I see them as brave. They were clever women - they knew what they were doing. I guess what I find sad is that they both were so valuable and had so much talent which ended all too soon. Most people don't have that.

They weren’t exactly good role models though were they? One with an eating disorder and one with drink and drug addictions. It’s like putting Princess Diana on a saintly pedestal, she soon looks a bit wobbly.

Give me Raye every time.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 21:20

@viques Quite likely due to trauma. Not their fault.

People do seem to obsess over those sorts of reckless, controversial lifestyles. Jim Morrison and Sid Vicious, too. I guess people wonder what it's like to go completely off the rails and have no boundaries, whilst also being loved and admired by groupies for their uniqueness and authentisity?

The dying part is important because you never get boring.. like say, Axl Rose or Pete Doherty.

Edited

Not sure Karen Carpenter had a reckless lifestyle, she had an eating disorder. She was phenomenally talented.

Im going to say this and say no more

Amy Winehouse was overrated.

Ridiculous!!

I didn’t say it was, I just said they aren’t good role models, and turning people with serious issues into idols is a dangerous precedent.

You can be surrounded by friends and loved ones but still feel alone . All the money and riches count for nothing

Itsthedramamick · 06/03/2026 21:26

Hey @Youshouldbestrongerthanme you sound like you’re struggling at the moment. I wonder if speaking to someone in real life might be helpful? There’s always someone for you to talk to at the Samaritans on 116 123.

@Ved Amy passed at 27, Karen at 32 ❤️

But neither wanted to die. Karen was sick and didnt get help and couldnt help herself. And amys body was weak from the drugs and been sober binged and died. Neither was on purpose or when it should have happened.

My mum became a professional classical singer in her 50s. She'd previously only sung in the church choir and amateur choral societies. She got proper voice training and was good enough to be hired for productions.

Is she still performing? I go a lot to classical and opera. Wonder if i have seen her?

Dymaxion · 06/03/2026 21:28

45 isn't young- it's well past my best before / usefulness date!

Probably best not say that to Trump or any of his supporters Grin

MaidOfSteel · 06/03/2026 21:29

I don’t get the hysteria over Winehouse, but Karen Carpenter is still a big loss to the music world. Her voice was a dream.

If you want to make music, do it! Get yourself out there on social media, do what you love.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 21:30

@Dollymylove Oh I agree - embarrassing I don't even own my own home! I do work btw, but it's not well paid. I teach children who can't access mainstream education due to many different reasons. Love my job but most people could do it so it's not exactly a skill. Need to make more £!

@Youshouldbestrongerthanme Trump became president at 70, who only knows what you could achieve in the next 25 years !

@Itsthedramamick These guys are incredible. But I doubt of use now.

Catsarenottheonlypets · 06/03/2026 21:32

To be fair, neither of thrm had " natural " voices, both sang in falsetto.
I loved Karen's voice but really didn't like Amy's which seemed very strained.
Worth remembering that Susan Dhoyle, was about 47 when she was on BGT.
Have you thought about working part time in pubs and working mens clubs? I've seen some amazing talent and such absolutely dire acts.
You should try it, you dont need a lot of kit and most places have their own PA so you just need to hook up your mixer and mic.

Youshouldbestrongerthanme · 06/03/2026 21:32

@Dymaxion Yes.amd look what a total dick he is!!!
