Hand hold for fluoxetine increase

I'm going for it tomorrow. Increasing my 20mg to 30mg after 10 years and I'm absolutely terrified.

I'm going to run a bit of a diary on this thread to hopefully look back on and monitor my progression and side effects

Wish me luck!!

I've taken sudafed 🙈 is it still OK to take the diazepam? I'm scared of taking too much 😂

overthinkersanonnymus · 11/10/2022 20:48

Welcome back @EmmaH2022 I hope you're ok!

My main reason was because I was having regular health anxiety blips lasting 3/4 weeks at a time. Which is ironic now I've made my health worse on purpose! I am embarrassed to say that I am doing 10mg extra every other day already.....I've only done it 3 times since fry

I've got the dreaded bruxism as well 😩

@cookies92 I've heard good things about propanol so definitely try it if you have physical anxiety I'd say. I don't think it'd do much for me as I'm all in my head and muscle tension

I'd treat myself to a diazepam tomorrow if I were you lol

Im actually dreading taking another one tomorrow. I can't understand why they're having this effect on me at all. I've been on 20mg for 10 years with no side effects when I started at all. Now I'm sat in bed scared and my jaw swinging all over the place 🤦🏻‍♀️

I feel like I'm back in my party days on a massive come down!

I'm considering calling my gp tomorrow to see if they can give me anything to get me through. Does anyone know of meds, that are not benzodiazepines, for mental anguish and distress 🤣 I don't think beta blockers will do much for my jaw 😩

If you mean anxiety and the Ssri isn’t working then Snri, venlafaxine for example can be very effective as can pregabalin though you may need secondary care input for this

overthinkersanonnymus · 11/10/2022 20:52

@Pobble81 how long have you had and how often do you take a diazepam? I've never had the balls to have one but I think I might just have to speak to the dr about it

Honestly it won’t hurt you but try not to self medicate, your prescribed things for a reason

overthinkersanonnymus · 11/10/2022 20:53

@Confuseddave what does secondary input mean?

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 11/10/2022 20:55

I accidentally took 2 lots of 20mg a few weeks ago - I forgot that I had taken them and ended up with a double dose.
I was a bit spaced out but nothing worrying.

overthinkersanonnymus · 11/10/2022 20:53

@Confuseddave what does secondary input mean?

Mental health services provided by a hospital consultant/ nurse specialist etc rather than a gp, sorry I shouldn’t just assume people know what it means.

Oh, I see

when I increased my dose, it was because of worsening depression rather than anxiety. So my experience might not be relevant to you.

have you considered taking anything herbal? When anxiety kicks in more, I have 20mg fluoxetine and take a herbal thing from the chemist called Stressless. There are lots of similar products around. Those are fine to take together.

I know officially it's not fine to take SJW and fluoxetine together but I've done it in the past, my doctor was fine with it. I didn't end up doing it this weekend because I had a tooth break so ended up being anxious instead!

but you see now why I don't want a higher dose of fluoxetine when I can avoid it - I've just seen the result of years of tooth grinding and will be paying a big bill for it.

Surprised your doctor was ok with you taking St. John’s wort with fluoxetine it really can be dangerous

overthinkersanonnymus · 11/10/2022 21:04

@Confuseddave oh that sounds scary. I just want to not have this tension in my body whilst adjusting to the higher dose. What would you recommend? Also are you a doctor 😂 please be a doctor lol

EmmaH2022 · 11/10/2022 21:06

confused that's been debunked now I thought

you can even get an SSRI prescribed alongside Wellbutrin in the US.

cookies92 · 11/10/2022 21:07

My anxiety is so bad right now that I feel sick and sweaty :( really unsure if I should take a diazepam. I took citalopram at 330pm and sudafed half an hour ago so I'll probably panic I've taken too much 😂 it's taken me years to even go into citalopram cos I have always been anxious about taking new things!

Not a doctor, I was an advanced nurse practitioner and independent non medical prescriber( sorry bit of a mouthful) specialising in treating depression, anxiety and other so called affective disorders. Just please don’t take St. John’s wort alongside standard anti depressants, sadly it’s a case of trial and error until you find one that works for you, I always used sertraline as first choice, generally effective if the dose is right

Icantsee25 · 11/10/2022 21:20

I'm in the exact same situation right now!! 4 weeks ago I increased my antidepressants (I take citalopram) from 20mg to 30mg after 7 years on 20. I've been so paranoid about side effects. I've felt really tired at times, like so sleepy I can't keep my eyes open. Sometimes my head feels like it's full of cotton wool. But I also have iron deficiency which was just discovered so I keep stressing over which is causing the problem - citalopram or low iron?? Impossible to tell.

I will say that the increase has helped me to feel calmer, but worrying about the side effects is a bit of a vicious circle.

cookies92 · 11/10/2022 21:25

@Icantsee25 I'm on citalopram too! How long did it take for your side effects to subside?

Icantsee25 · 11/10/2022 21:31

cookies92 · 11/10/2022 21:25

@Icantsee25 I'm on citalopram too! How long did it take for your side effects to subside?

To be honest I don't think I had any side effects when I first started them, except they made me sleep more - but that was a good thing, I had insomnia before citalopram. That side effect has never gone away for me, for 7 years I've needed a lot of sleep but I'd rather than than insomnia

The only side effect I've had when increasing them is feeling more sleepy too, but again unsure if that's the citalopram or the low iron

cookies92 · 11/10/2022 21:40

@Icantsee25 aw wow mine seem to do the opposite and I wake up all the time 😔

My understanding is that citalopram is more of sedating one than other SSRIs

fluoxetine is more activating

in my 20s I had citalopram as anxiety was a bigger problem than depression

then I switched to fluoxetine when depression became the bigger problem

I find a lot of GPs aren't big on the details of these meds but for a long time I had a doctor who was very knowledgeable, which was lucky.

I do have insomnia but refuse to take SNRIs as everyone I know who tried them found they had weight gain issues and I definitely don't need extra weight!

cookies92 · 12/10/2022 07:07

How is everyone today? I feel so anxious in my bed I barely sleep. Had about 3 hours deep sleep then dozed the rest. My worst symptom of anxiety is feeling sick so when I woke up I felt awful and was sick. Kind of getting used to it now 🤦‍♀️

BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss · 12/10/2022 07:20

I’m always awake half the night but I take fluoxetine before bed and it stops me spending the awake time in a state of panic and anxiety.
Not perfect as I need sleep but wouldn’t want to go back to how I was before Prozac.

cookies92 · 12/10/2022 07:23

@BagpussBagpussOldFatFurryCatpuss how long have you been on fluoxetine?
