Hand hold for fluoxetine increase

I'm going for it tomorrow. Increasing my 20mg to 30mg after 10 years and I'm absolutely terrified.

I'm going to run a bit of a diary on this thread to hopefully look back on and monitor my progression and side effects

Wish me luck!!

@ZZTopGuitarSolo welcome!

Would mind sharing what symptoms you have when you go back on it and when you feel they're getting better?

My physical symptoms are those related to anxiety - pounding heart, trembling, hyperventilation, etc.

I can't hold conversations with people at all, because my mind is just racing with anxiety, and the obsessive thoughts are impossible to stop for more than a minute or so at a time.

Last time I think I had about 2 weeks of massive anxiety, then suddenly it resolved, and I was OK.

The fluoxetine does eventually really really help me - I go on it when I experience either depression or anxiety or both - but it takes 2-3 weeks of being much much worse before I get better.

My doctor did give me betablockers last time, so that I could take them when I had things like stressful work calls to do, as those were something I was really struggling with. I still take them occasionally if I have something coming up that I know I'll find stressful.

Next time I go onto Fluoxetine I'm going to talk to him beforehand about if there's anything else he can give me during that first couple of weeks.

I'm so sorry you're struggling, it definitely sounds worth checking in with your GP.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 11/10/2022 18:39

Ironically, I can come off Fluoxetine cold turkey without any problem. It's just starting on it that's my difficulty.

I used to be a counsellor, and I found that almost everyone who came to me who recently been started on SSRIs was struggling with side effects. I generally encouraged them to give it 3-4 weeks if they could manage it, to see if the side effects then diminished, but I also encouraged them to go back to their GP if not.

overthinkersanonnymus · 11/10/2022 18:51

@ZZTopGuitarSolo thsts so helpful, thank you.

For me personally I don't really have any physical symptoms of anxiety apart from a bit of shaking and heat in my body but that resolves pretty quickly on it's own. Apart from this lock jaw thing 😳

My anxiety is locked in my head and a constant kaleidoscope of catastrophic thoughts and racing dizziness. I feel like I don't belong to my own body and I'm in state of constant hyper awareness. Maybe I'm just stone cold crazy 😂

If anyone wants to start up a WhatsApp group you could send me your number and I can do it from there. I'm finding it hard to follow the thread 😂

@Pobble81 I agree! But I also knew this would happen and I have to give it a chance. I'm only on day 4...

I've just cried and thought "well done dick head, you were doing ok just plodding along and living with anxiety blips and now look at you. Selfish" 😂

@overthinkersanonnymus I'm not a weirdo promise 😂 just find it hard to keep up.

I took my pill later on today (330) and I feel dreadful now. My head is sore and I'm absolutely exhausted but I've not been sleeping great so could just be that. My jaw is sore too!

Bunnyfluffles · 11/10/2022 19:51

Pobbles I'm sorry it's so tough for you. And everyone! Hugs. Let's hope tomorrow is better ☺️

overthinkersanonnymus · 11/10/2022 20:03

Im actually dreading taking another one tomorrow. I can't understand why they're having this effect on me at all. I've been on 20mg for 10 years with no side effects when I started at all. Now I'm sat in bed scared and my jaw swinging all over the place 🤦🏻‍♀️

I feel like I'm back in my party days on a massive come down!

I'm considering calling my gp tomorrow to see if they can give me anything to get me through. Does anyone know of meds, that are not benzodiazepines, for mental anguish and distress 🤣 I don't think beta blockers will do much for my jaw 😩

Hi,

So I've been on 20mg citalopram for a week now after having a bit of a breakdown. I was previously prescribed 10mg at the beginning of the year for low mood but came off it after about a month as felt I didn't need it. This time round my anxiety has been absolutely through the roof. I had diazepam prescribed when I was at my worst too - couldn't sleep, eat, was throwing up all the time, couldn't leave the house. Was bloody awful. I started to feel a bit better but on Sunday night I woke up and got myself into a huge panic attack and was sick. This absolutely derailed me for all of yesterday. I have 2 young kids and am a single parent so I feel so much pressure to get myself better as I'm relying on friends and family which is hard on them too.

Anyway I'm wondering if the reason I've taken a set back is possibly the side effects of the citalopram. I have been nauseous, can't sleep, sweaty, sore jaw, anxiety worse, tired and weak feeling like a hangover and lack of appetite. I know these are common side effects, have others experienced this?

Unfortunately citalopram increases anxiety when first used, for upto two weeks, well known side effect but will stop if you can persevere, we used to prescribe diazepam with it when initially commencing to help

cookies92 · 11/10/2022 20:19

@Confuseddave I did get some diazepam but only have one left. Do you think its worth me taking it before bed?

@Pobble81 thank you. Might be a stupid question but can I take sudafed for my headache? Probably sounds weird taking that but it always helps this type of headache. Or is this all too much medication?😂

Confuseddave · 11/10/2022 20:34

Diazepam actually continues to work for a long time after you take it so to some extent doesn’t matter but the psychological benefit of a good nights sleep linked to taking it shouldn’t be ignored

cookies92 · 11/10/2022 20:36

@Confuseddave so it's worth taking it?

Sudafed can actually cause headaches and affect sleep, personally wouldnt

Confuseddave · 11/10/2022 20:38

cookies92 · 11/10/2022 20:36

@Confuseddave so it's worth taking it?

Yes

OP
I am sorry, I have lost the plot a bit.

what was the reason for you increasing your dosage initially?

can you increase by 5mg instead of 10? Or take the extra 10mg every other day?
