Please tell me that mine isnt the only house that looks like a compete shit-hole?!?! I'm sick to death of all the crap everywhere. DD's toys and clothes that she just dumps everywhere. dp's clothes on the floor that he cant be bothered to pick up and wash. No matter how many times i tidy it the house looks awful and its really getting me down. I dread anybody knocking on the door because its too embarassing to open it! I know you cant expect to have a toddler and an immaculate house but surely not this bad??? I dont know anyone else with little ones so i havent had any other experience of it. I've just filled a black bag with a load of toys pens figures and chucked it out and thats only one room!! Do you think it would be cruel to throw it all away? (obviously not all of her stuff!!)

I moved house the week I gave birth, amd am still living in chaos 5 months on. My DS also has eczema so am on constant guilt trip about the millions of dustmites that must be roaming around. My health visitor gave me this poem which puts it all into perspective.

I hope my children look back on today
And see a parent who had time to play.
There will be years for cleaning and cooking,
But children grow up when you're not looking
So quiet down cobwebs, dust go to sleep.
I'm rocking my baby and babies won't keep.

OnZephyrstdayofXmas · 06/12/2004 12:06

(((((((((((((((((((bighugs!!!))))))))))))))))))))
I've spent the last 4 days clearing up and throwing out crap and theres still toys everywhere the second i turn my back!!! I lost it yesterday and told dp while he was at work that everything that was on the floor is now in the bin - he came home with a carrier bag full of chocolate lol

colditzcolditzcold · 06/12/2004 12:07

((((((((((((hug))))))))))) I hate small toys. I don't even like medium sized toys. And why?

Because, very much like small animals, small toys breed.

How strange! I was just about to post a message along the same lines. We live in rented accomodation so can't fix shelves etc and also the house is quite small compared to our old house so we have v.large furniture in small rooms!

As Christmas is coming up I am looking for some neat and cheap storage idea's for my crowded living room. We have had to take our dining table out to the garage - we are that short of space! Is there anywhere apart from argos that does cheap storage on the internet?

Also how often do you clean each room/wash clothes/change beds and all the normal household chores and if you do do it do you wait until you're little ones are in bed or can you do it when they are up etc?

Branster · 06/12/2004 21:42

Juliehafrancis - in the Branster household there are always clothes to wash and this activity takes place throughout the day, evening depending on me rememebering to do it, otherwise it happens at 11PM.
Change beds weekly and try to do whilst DD is downstairs watching a favourite TV programme, unfortunatelly she comes after me, gets really excited, jumps on the bed, I eventually manage to change the bedding and then she promptly pulls the duvet and pillows on the floor! So I ahve to return later and fix that. I try and do proper house cleaning top to bottom when she's at nursery and it only takes me 30min, if I do it when she's at home (which I have to) it takes about 3 hours what with DD helping, interfering, requiring help/assistance with different activities and so on. It's annoying but have no choice. Anyway, i spend most evening ironing, cleaning kitchen or bathrooms, floors, windows, whaterver I can just to get it out of the way in peace.

Can I join in too? I have four children, but I am convinced that the main reason we live in a messy put is because we have ahuge basement which is mainly one huge playroom. The trouble is, out of sight (I rarely go down there) is out of mind and the children have never got into the habit of tidying up because I am not there to see the mess. If the toys were all over their bedroom floors, it would be different. nonetheless, toys do creep around the house with increasing regularity and whenever I have a blitz or make the children tidy up, it just gets messed up again before I can turn around.

I like Gilli's suggestion about the bin bag, and I do confiscate toys occasionally, but nothing seems to get home to my children about the mess the make.

A messy pit that should read.

Petesmum · 08/12/2004 12:59

Hooorahh, I'm not alone in the never ending battle to keep our house tidy. Before DS I was a total neat freak. Before DS could move about I still managed to be a neat freak. Now DS is a stampeding toddler with more toys than most small toy shops, I am just freaked out every evening by the lack of visible carpet.

I have 3 coping methods - which have a variable sucess rate:

  1. Have a large wicker toy box in the living room into which all DS's toys go each evening.
  2. Limit the number of toys allowed downstairs to however many actually fit into the wicker box (however within a couple of day's I'm ferrying stuff back upstairs!)
  3. Blitz the house once a week and accept a low level of carnage for the rest of the time.

And to qualify me for the bad mother of the year award...for DS birthday in Feb we've asked family not to buy him pressies but to make a donation towards taking DS to Disneyland Paris - I simply couldn't face another load of toys entering the house Blush

got 2 teens and 6 yr old-it only gets worse!!!!

juniperdropofbrandy · 10/12/2004 10:42

Yes!!!! I was just going to post about this and noticed a thread already started.

Dh was away for a week and the house was soooooo tidy but I think it's because I wasn't as happy (missing him Sad) so I had to keep my mind occupied. Now it's back to normal Blush
This morning at 8 the doorbell went. I looked out of the landing window (we were just getting up!) and it was a British Gasman. I was confused as I knew I'd paid the bill online?? Then he said he was here to check the boiler and radiators as I now have the service plan. Yikes!!!!!!! He had to go in every room of the house Blush Luckily he was very nice and didn't break his kneck falling over stuff.

I decided to get back into tidying but had to check my emails at 9.15am...........Wink
am off now to pick up DS2 from nursery then I must get some cleaning done before we go to the play area as we're out tonight and need it moderately tidy for the babysitter.

popsycal · 10/12/2004 10:43

juniper - that is why i dont have a service contract!:)

juniperdropofbrandy · 10/12/2004 10:43

btw I'd even marked his visit in my diary just to be sure I'd tidy up but forgot to check it Blush

juniperdropofbrandy · 10/12/2004 10:45

it's so refreshing to know you're not alone though. Mind you I do have at least one close friend who's as untidy as me so we can wallow in each other's pits quite happily Smile

popsycal · 10/12/2004 10:47

My challenge (and god it is a challenge) is to sort ot me bedroom! I feel like a teenager - clean that room!
I have to decipher the clean piles of clothes from the dirty ones - hoping they have all merged now and will just be able to stick them in bin bags.....
Reorganise the room - DH made a wardrobe afew months ago - well half made it and we still have a chest of drawers in the middle of the room.

And all this to get under the bed to remind myself what baby clothes we have!
:)

Petesmum · 10/12/2004 13:56

If only I had the challenge to sort out the one room Smile My urgent room to sort out is the living room as we need to find space for the xmas tree! After that, we have one room so full of old baby clothes, dismantled cot, books etc...that we can't even get to the window Blush

juniperdropofbrandy · 11/12/2004 00:39

do any of you enjoy visiting mega clean mates? I feel a bit uncomfortable if it's too pristine

juniperdropofbrandy · 11/12/2004 00:41

popsycal, your bedroom could be mine lol Grin
