Cybergarden: Spring into Summer

Here's a new thread for us.

OP posts:
Nilgiri · 24/05/2012 22:47

GrinGrinGrin at going into garden and forgetting to curse, Showtime! It's all that sunshine, it does things too you!

I'm having tech problems - computer and internet. So will post this quickly in case I disappear again.

Showtime · 24/05/2012 22:48

Hope you're finding life a bit easier upward, and managed to get outdoors today. Am definitely feeling my age these days, so apologies for earlier ramblings. We';re due for more good weather tomorrow, so I'm looking forward to time in the RL garden doing nothing much.
Will be having an early night - no more nodding into keyboard- so please accept some nightcaps Brew and a good-night hug.

Nilgiri · 24/05/2012 23:02

I'm a touch concerned about you dropping off with the computer still on, Showtime. If you'd like it to shut down automatically at the same time each night (if still on), there are instructions here. And if you're running it on mains, would a little plug in timer switch help?

But probably you're more sensible than me, and don't have a recharger and wires strung perilously across the bedclothes when you MN in bed...

That's very bad of the pharmacist! Could you explain the problem to your helpful GP and get a fresh script to take to a new much better pharmacist? It's really not OK for you to run out of painkillers.Shock

Nilgiri · 24/05/2012 23:10

Fresh, gleaming, smart white car sounds perfect for summer adventures! Although, not as adventurous as the sack-of-potatoes-suspension and dog-lead-door.Shock

Doing nothing much tomorrow is an excellent plan. Will schedule same here after overdoing things finishing painting and because the internet broke and I was bored.

Hope futuredream's been having a good day, and Upward's has passed bearably.

Showtime · 25/05/2012 09:37

Thanks for your helpful posts Nilgiri, and I do hope your technical problems are now sorted.
One of the pharmacy assistants got in touch with the helpful one at surgery, and all prescriptions are now due on Monday, so fingers crossed.. Of course, there's a fair chance I'll also get a repeat of the item I collected yesterday, but can't risk another conversation with foreign chemist. Will wait and see if he's permanent.

Very grateful for (complicated!) info re time-switch on laptop, but at present it is on mains in dining area, and as I understand it, being on overnight just costs a tiny bit more - would you please let me know if I've misunderstood this?

Another lovely morning, so hope we can all enjoy at least part of the day, Brews available from now, group hug available almost any time.

futuredream · 25/05/2012 10:49

Morning all- have been without internet since Wednesday , roadworks causing
disruption to TV too ,and without Skype or phones , couldn't ask Dh to
post yesterday -sympathies on your pc & net problems , Nilgiri&< waves across road Grin >No idea why it's come back for a bit now

So sorry to hear you're struggling ,Upward , & agree you are lovely to
post when feeling low . < sending the most positive thoughts >

I 've been fretting ove r not symreplying about your probllems with hands , Showtime - may be worth asking doctor about , next time - and
am distressed to see you 've been feeling your age lately .Really hope pharmacist's mistake doesn't cost you much -needed painkillersSad-fingers crossed you do indeed get them on Moinday

Your beautiful holly seedlings did indeed arrive yesterday !!! in best container I have ever seen , whicch I will re use ... the lily of the valley seem to have a disease this yer , so perhaps you've had a lucky escape from them Sad
Hollies are planted out and enjoying the bidsong , and were a fabulous surprise

I've been trying all week to post a card , but between Dh's broken nights &
I've had a mixture of minor ailments this week , I haven't been able to get to Post office, & am not sure I will make it today < HF brings aquilegias to lovely cybergardeners >

I also forgot to thank Nilgiri for link to gorgeous artworks - never seen artist before and will revisit the name to check on further works ! Very good advice on pc , which I am unsure of myself ,Showtime
Hope we are all OK in heat

Showtime , I may never again see a big sack of potatoes without the mental image of your Mother "shopping" with such perilous consequences

Brew & cool drinks to go with light morsels

< grasshoppers leap about cyberlawn as HF , ndt and beagle all doze in cool hedge >

rked and will be revisited!

Showtime · 25/05/2012 12:48

Glad hollies arrived safely futuredream - it was just luck that I found two suitable trays for container, and apologies if I forgot to enclose a message (just realised, no memory of doing this, so another senior moment). It does mean no requirement for you to reply, particularly as I know you've been more than busy recently, as well as messed about by roadworks. Really hope that your DH's tooth has stopped aching, and that you're both able to catch up on sleep, and appreciate image of grass-hoppers active near dozing pets, as well as thoughtful snacks.

futuredream · 25/05/2012 21:05

Thank you so much , kind Showtime - your posts are the bedrock of the cybergarden & help us all so much with the day . Am going to catch up on lots of extra sleep this weekend , thank you - iIn fact , apologies for long absence , needed to dormouseas a bit tired from an infection ....I promise I don't feel obliged to reply , am just at least a week behind on such thingsGrin Have never met a little container like that , & it wil be very useful !

Thank you so much -Dh very relieved to have pain largely gone whilst waits for available appt, but is still quite wobbly from it - how are you today , or rather , how would you have been if not so warm Was high 2os here all
day , but I believe not same everywhere by any means - reallly windy now , too
? Hoping Upward and Nilgiri not suffered too much today , & that Nigliri*'s pc and internet problems are both being mended

Met allotment gent earlier , arriving for a stint of helping ndt's human to transport dung heap ... he was smothered in diluted TCP to try to ward off the midges & they're still pottering as sun setsSmile

< Brews and sparkling drinks >

Showtime · 25/05/2012 22:27

Sorry to hear about your infection futuredream, no doubt worsened by lack of sleep and stress, so hope it's soon gone. Am embarrassed by your very kind comments, and all I can remember about plant container is finding two supermarket trays of matching size, so it was just lucky (unless I found a really super item later, and it's now gone from my memory - just possible.)

I didn't know TCP discouraged midges, usually keeping an Autan stick nearby, and have forgotten what we used before that was invented.

Hope Nilgiri and upward have both had a better day, and that we can all have a restful weekend. Off to bed very soon, so will say "goodnight" now.

futuredream · 25/05/2012 23:00

Thank you so much for kind wishes , showtime - am doggedly tackling some of the cuses of the stress , feeling braver thnusual
Sorry to embarrass you , and yes, seem to be 2 containers , but exceptionally sturdy yet light

I can't remember either what was a good deterrent before current generation of chemicals ( I may have mentioned before in mother country there was a always a large aerosol to hand labelled DDT , which smelled delicious )

Also very much hoping Upward has felt better than yesterday , & Nilgiri has not been too trouble dby tech horrors

< ndt watches sparkling crescent moon as he listens to the nocturnal creatures >
< ears prick up at flutter of fairy wings >

Nilgiri · 26/05/2012 00:17

You are quite as much the bedrock of the cybergarden as Showtime, future. The two of you are very wonderful.

So sorry to hear about infection, and hope plentiful dormousing and powerful pharmaceuticals will see it off. I wonder what the C17th villagers would have used? Hartshorn, possibly, to bring down temperature? And herbs to ward off mossies? Perhaps not DDT, tho..Shock

Sorry you're having drastic tech problems. Maybe mine is also being dug up, somewhere out of sight? DP seems to be on first name terms with deep techy bits of the internet, and will doubtless sigh and say, "It's the XXX equipment at YYY exchange that can't talk to the latest ZZZ software on AAA server in Hungary. But the patch will be released Tuesday and till then we're re-routing via Peru." And I'll nod and sip tea.

I do hope they put all of your utilities back properly in the next few days. No TV or phone either is not nice.

Showtime I'm sure your dining room computer is fine to be on at night. Some use very little energy indeed when dormant. I was just imagining you with a laptop and wires strewn across the bed, as I have here, where falling asleep would be distinctly dangerous!

Upward, I wonder how you're getting on with your much deserved IPad?

Showtime · 26/05/2012 10:08

Thanks for reassurance about laptop Nilgiri, and have been thinking of having exactly the Heath-Robinson arrangement you mention around the bed, as battery only provides couple of hours and is easily forgotten.
Am amazed at techie example that your DP understands, having no clue what happens beyond plug (or battery).
What is even more amazing is the number of people who know even less than I do.

Fond memories here of DDT futuredream, which came in a metal spray for fly-killing (once we'd made sure goldfish were covered/out of room of course).

Another beautiful morning here, so am looking forward to relaxing time in garden, and hope upward has something similar planned for the weekend.

futuredream · 26/05/2012 15:13

< surfaces from dormousing then belatedly creeps in Brews and cooling drinksl> I have suddenly realised that the fairies are the least of the wondrousness and miraculousness in our cybergarden , andd hope Upward can feel their magic today .

GrinGrin at "What is even more amazing is the number of people who know even less"< counts self in > So true , Showtime - I didn't think anythig of wires across bedclothes etc , good point Nilgiri , & advice on energy consumption , which I look at far more closely since you raised my awareness . ... GrinGrin at your nodding & sipping tea during DP's musings of techy brilliance bet even he's marvelling at how roadworks could affect broadband . TV is back atm [thank you , but phone seems to be down for other causes & we haven't had he energy to call engineer yet . Hope your pc & net problems are easily fixed

Hope you've enjoyed relaxing in garden , Showtime , & that Nilgiri has been able to enjoy a light baskfew minutes in the garden , also that none of us is suffering too much in the heat .
ThanksThanksThanksThanksThanks to Nilgiri and &*Showtime for the imagination & humour which make visits to the cybergarden so greatly looked forward to , & for the constancy of your visits < note to self >

Heh Showtime , the church tower last week had a tin or two still in use in Norman window frame - not a flying creature to be seen . Glad the goldfish were so carefully shielded... sympathies to those regvery attractive to biting insects , as I see how you suffer !

< watches as jewel green caterplillar, grown splendidly big , puts finishing touches to its silken pupa >

< white hart peeks nervously through hedge to check pesky future has no further need of his medicinal qualities , then prances onto cybergarden lawn under our contendly - dozing noses >

Showtime · 26/05/2012 16:22

Thanks so much for your own varied and imaginative postings here futuredream- don't know how I'd manage without your daily contributions, particularly when I'm unable to join in.
Am amazed at news of DDT in church, as I thought it was banned more than 50 years ago.

Hope you manage to be present when caterpillar reaches final stage, and can maybe identify it for us. (Only know of one green one, which is not remarkable).

Previous owners here have mounted stag's antlers on house wall in back garden, and I've not had energy to dispose of same, but your hart has nothing to worry about. Beautiful animals, but only at a distance, and always hoped I'd not meet one while driving at night.

Before I forget, after six years at this property, I've finally seen a great tit in the garden! They were the most common variety at last two properties, and I used to think seagulls frightened them away.

Nilgiri · 26/05/2012 16:25

(Sorryin advance for typing, on strange machine while mine visits the Apple hospital shop.)

You had groans of great sympathy from DP at whole utilities strife, Future.

Thank you, have indeed been in garden hanging all the laundry in the universe for the last few days! Hope everyone else also enjoying and not overheating.

Showtime · 26/05/2012 21:48

Congratulations on managing new machine without any typos Nilgiri, and hope you get your own back very soon and without a large bill. Mumsnet was off-air earlier, complete with apology, so I went back to trying to sort an old problem; enlarging an item someone sent me on Facebook, which I wanted to pass on to someone without a Facebook account. I checked two lots of instructions on paper and screen, also attempted to find out how to enlarge very small copy I managed to print out, but no directions that I could find (Epson). Can anyone assist please? It must be very simple.....

I enjoyed warm weather in garden and look forward to tomorrow, although will have to take laptop with me for any incoming Skypes, being weekend.

Hope other gardeners enjoyed weather too, especially upward, who was feeling down earlier in week.

futuredream · 26/05/2012 22:24

Evening good gardenersBrew I missed Mn outage
[hanks]Thanksto Nilgiri's pc in Apple hospital

As to your attempted good deed , Showtime Dh is certain he knows less than you about printing but says - not great news if he's correct- that if you haven't got a high resolution image to copy you are unlikely to get good result - you know this of course .
He doesn't think the Facebook origin of image needs any special procedure- again , you'll know about that< learning >
Even if image processing software was used - you may have this -would not be great if not a high resolution image as would zoom in on pixels rather than a whole image

He says if you do what I guess is the normal method , to drag image iinto Word & if it's an image that Word recognises zoom in on it and screen print , still can't get a good image as need a larger one < passes egg to suck >

Thank you so very much for 100% unmerited words - I need no imagination , the flora & fauna perform so pleasingly

Amazing sunshine here , possibly the prettiest day I can remmember , & am also hoping comforting for Upwardand that Madmouse and kizzie have had a good day with family
I'm sure the churchwardens keep lethal can up there for amusement only < phew >
< wants to learn to download photos so can share view from tower >

futuredream · 26/05/2012 22:24

me < learning > , obviously ! Brews an cool drinks

futuredream · 26/05/2012 22:25

and thank you for posting from unfamiliar machine , Nilgiri- please do not tire yourself with longer post on it !

AfternoonDelight · 26/05/2012 22:40

Um.. hi.

Is this a support thread? Can I join?

Showtime · 26/05/2012 23:27

Hi to AfternoonDelight - we do mutual support yes, based in our cybergarden, and visitors are sometimes welcome .
I'm off to bed before collapsing onto keyboard, and no doubt one of the other cybergardeners will comment.

futuredream · 27/05/2012 00:36

< waves goodnight to Showtime

Hi AfternoonDelight , great name - what sort of support would best suit ? This is a slower-moving thread as , partly by coincidence, the regular posters all have health conditions & disabilities , so it can take days to receive a reply --and then we'll have got our wires crossed Grin

Also rather unusually for a parenting site, you'll find no mention of dc .

Our experiences are pretty varied , but all have experience of depression or anxiety , and often loved ones who have , also .

Don't want to torment you with the "tell us about yourself" bit ... would suggest you read a few pages here and of other long - running threads in MH to see what might best suit .

We have a cybersummerhouse < puts out covered jugs of iced lemonade , and tin of breakfast pastries and wholemeal muffins >

Peaceful night to all , and apologies in advance if I oversleep , even by my standards

Showtime · 27/05/2012 10:02

Morning all, and belated thanks to Nilgiri's DP for printing advice - see, I can't recall ever dragging anything to Word (usual method), so am feeling way behind here. It must often be required, a slightly larger than original copy? Maybe it's a secret, divulged on payment of some premium rate, or even understanding of Word? DB (loads of qualifications) suggested studying FAQ on Epson, so will try this some time.

Big thanks also to futuredream for amazingly good description of our (very idiosynchratic) thread, which has evolved over time into some support for some people.
Incidentally, when I commented on the name AfternoonDelight on a boat, my late DH grinned and told me it signified an activity usually outside marriage and often experienced on boats, so I'd be interested in knowing reason for nickname - or is it a secret?

Another beautiful day here, Brews all round, and hoping that upward is having a good weekend.

AfternoonDelight · 27/05/2012 11:40

Hello again.

I'm not sure what kind of support I'd like. I've recently become disabled (well, 7 months ago, but I'm still getting used to it) and I've suffered with depression since I was 8.

It started rearing its ugly head again shortly after the birth of my daughter, 3 months before I started having more serious health problems. I thought it might be helpful to have people to talk to when the darker days hit. DP has been fantastic, but he's never had depression before, and is a bit bemused by the whole thing. He's very good at giving me hugs or talking to me when I need it.

About my name - will probably explain it better. I absolutely love the film Anchorman!

Showtime · 27/05/2012 13:07

Thanks for the link, AfternoonDelight, and sorry to hear about the depression. We have the cybergarden to retreat to on the bad days, which we've evolved over a few years to amuse ourselves, and is one of the few places where "dormousing" is accepted if not indulged in, likewise mobility problems. We are also frequently entertained by various companion animals, who have origins in RL and can be a real tonic to those of us without any pets at present.
Making a tray of Brews with remains of futuredream's
home-made snacks, before departing for some (artistic) painting.
