Welcome to the continuing thread for those following 5:2 or other forms of IF (Intermittent Fasting) such as 4:3, ADF, etc.

Basically it is 2 very low cal days ("fasts") per week - which need not be consecutive - and eat "normally" to maintain on the other 5 days.

For those who have dieted or maybe overeaten for years, eating "normally"
means roughly the number of calories your body needs to maintain - NOT reduce - its weight (see TDEE calculator below).

IMPORTANT
If you have had past diagnosed Eating Disorders or serious MH problems you should NOT do 5:2 or any other kind of fasting

JARGON alert

16:8 is a different type of fasting, which can be combined with 5:2.
Daily zero-cal fast for 16 hours and eat within an 8 hour window. To lose weight, this needs a weekly calorie deficit as well

b2b (optional) back-to-back / consecutive fast days, each with an increased allowance of 650 calories instead of 500

BMI (Body Mass Index) healthy range is 18.5 - 24.9 for Caucasians. Upper limit may be 22 for some of Asian origin.

FD = single Fast Day: aim for 500 calories (600 for men or 25% TDEE whichever is higher) or 1000 cals for BF
No alcohol or junk on FDs
Even if you exercise strenuously, do NOT increase FD cals to allow for exercise

MFP = My Fitness Pal, a useful App or website to track food & drink calories

miniFD = MiniFD, 850-1000 calories, no alcohol or junk

NFD = Non-Fast Day, averages around TDEE

NSV / LSV = Non Scale Victory / LifeStyle (change) Victory, e.g. compliment, smaller waist, clothes size

SV = Scale Victory

TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure, the average number of calories you burn in a day, is calculated from your current weight, height, age, activity level.
Aim to average about this for NFDs.

WOE / WOL = Way Of Eating / Way Of Life. We say this instead of "diet", to emphasise that we must make a permanent change in how we eat, to maintain our new healthy weight long term.

Jump in and say hello!!

Welcome back @Lucylurker

@Katypp when my scales are not hidden under tonnes of building work detritus, I weigh 3-4 times a week but only track the same day a week if that makes sense? So I can see if there's a downward trend on a consistent basis. I fluctuate too much to look at daily trends...

OohMrDarcy · 06/08/2024 12:02

I'm the same as @harriethoyle @Katypp
I weigh daily but keep a track on a Monday morning - as it's straight after the weekend it's worst case for me but I can track it weekly. If you've had a gain and 100% stayed on track it could be a million things not food related - digestion slowing down, water retention, hormonal changes etc. .. just keep going and it will right itself

Katypp · 06/08/2024 13:05

I only weigh myself on sat morning. Keeping going!

CrabPuff · 06/08/2024 13:58

Checking in for a FD today - I’m not sure whether I’m doing a B2B or two separate. I’ve just had a 291 cal chicken laksa from Cook which was actually very good - and no crap in it. I’m very bad at portion control so ready meals for me on FD is essential. I cook from scratch otherwise but need the off switch.

I thought my scales were in a non wobbly accurate place but they aren’t so who knows. Jean size it is then.

harriethoyle · 06/08/2024 16:16

@CrabPuff I’m exactly the same. Ready meals all the way on FD!

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 06/08/2024 21:51

No idea where I’d be without them HH!

Kitchen closed on 570 cals. I’m still humming about tomorrow - makes sense to just get it out of the way and I’m a bit over 500 but I’m not always 100% rigid.

had half a pot of cully and sully mushroom risotto this evening and it was very good - bit of salt needed but that’s it. Still very surprised at how good the chicken laksa was too! No salt needed there!

CrabPuff · 07/08/2024 07:54

Ok - checking in for day 2 of a B2B. Best get it out of the way I think and I appreciate the extra 150 cals for the day.

I’m going to try the Thai chicken curry from cook and then either a Bol massaman curry or fish pie.

harriethoyle · 07/08/2024 08:51

I’m fasting with you @CrabPuff - tuna thin for lunch and chicken soup for tea 🤤 out for supper tomorrow night so I’m going to try and be virtuous until 5pm, before all bets are off 🤣🙈

NFD forme today.
Breakfast: 2 boiled eggs, slice of seeded toast and butter. Oj
Lunch: Jacket potato (Nutracheck calls large. I would say medium at best), prawns, cocktail sauce
Dinner: Salmon, vevetable rice and barbecue sauce.
Planned snacks: hm choc cake (tiny piece), strawberries.
= 319 calories left to play with

Lucylurker · 07/08/2024 14:46

Fasting today. Only 2 day. Doing mondays and Wednesdays. Got on the scales yesterday which was a step forward. Not great but I knew that.
Going to be a bit extra careful on nfds since feeling motivated. Had a month of v.v unhealthy eating so trying to compensate for the lack of fruit and vegetables.
Also trying to up the excercise.
hope everyone doing ok.

harriethoyle · 07/08/2024 20:59

Kitchen closed on 577, how did you both get on @CrabPuff @Lucylurker ?

OP posts:
Lucylurker · 07/08/2024 21:19

Oh well done Harriet. Did ok thanks. Going to bed shortly so all good.

CrabPuff · 08/08/2024 08:40

Ugh. I had a friend message me yesterday afternoon to suggest dinner as she was in town and had finished her event much earlier than thought so that was out of the window. Definitely not even a mini - I hadn’t seen her for 18 months so we had a long dinner and drinks.

I’m in two minds about today. It’s not a great day for it socially but I could probably white knuckle it but don’t fancy it! Maybe a mini. Pff. I don’t know!

harriethoyle · 08/08/2024 09:35

Why don't you skip breakfast @CrabPuff and see how you get on? that's often what I do so I have the option later on if it seems doable...

OP posts:
CrabPuff · 08/08/2024 11:24

I’ve skipped breakfast and been to the gym… it’s hotter than forecast so basically I want to eat only ice cream all day.

I’m going to have the ready meal I should have had for supper last night for lunch, then see whether I can tell myself “have it tomorrow!” All afternoon.

I’ve ordered some new jeans and I am tightly in a size 14 in a different style (white company) and 14 in another style practically falling off (also WC - so inconsistent!) so this (another style again, that I haven’t bought before) is coming in a 14 and God I hope they’re not too tight as it’s too hot for tight denim but the very thought is enough to put me off all the ice cream so perhaps I’ll focus on that for today!

CrabPuff · 08/08/2024 18:17

the fat lady hasn’t sung yet but I THINK I’m declaring the kitchen closed at 576 - I resorted to diet lemonade as a treat and I haven’t had fizzy drinks with sweetener for ages after listening to some incomprehensible podcast on gut flora. But it’s done the job I think.

Back on the fun tomorrow.

I’ve also looked up TDEE for my goal weight apropos of the conversation up thread: low! 1695 or something. Tricky.

10/25 FDs for Botox!

harriethoyle · 09/08/2024 08:35

Well done @CrabPuff an excellent effort!

OohMrDarcy · 09/08/2024 09:49

morning all

Checking in for a Friday FD! Feels like it might be a tough one, but only water consumed so far

Have some chicken in the fridge I can use for my dinner so just plotting the rest of it out now!

CrabPuff · 09/08/2024 19:31

Thank you Harriet - I don’t deny I felt like a sulky teen around 11am yesterday - I REALLY didn’t want to be restrained!

Very impressive to do a Friday FD MrDarcy.

I think my next is Tues and Weds B2B

size 14 jeans arrived and slipped on nicely so THAT was lucky. And vanity sizing but Crashing ON.

OohMrDarcy · 09/08/2024 20:01

Kitchen closed on 650. I'll take that

Take the vanity sizing win @CrabPuff ! That's amazing!

My NSV of the week was fitting much more comfortably in my plane seat when I flew for work at the start of the week, and laptop belt had to be tightened a fair bit too !

Katypp · 10/08/2024 08:01

Grrrr weekly weigh in and I've gained AGAIN!
I did go a bit mad on Thursday but stuck to my two fast days last week and apart from Thursday was 200-300 below my recommended calories on NC every day.
Really difficult to keep motivated now

PersisFord · 11/08/2024 09:22

Can I join in? I've done this before twice but fell off the fasting wagon with some health issues and am now about a stone over. Looking forward to that nice clean fasting feeling although i remember from starting from scratch that the first few FDs are pretty bleak!

Has anyone got a link for TDEE calculator? Mine will be higher now I'm heavier!!!

First goal is weighing every day and this week TDEE every day. Next week back to 5:2.

Looking forward to getting to know you all!

MonkeyTennis34 · 11/08/2024 12:30

Welcome @PersisFord

Back from my holiday and ready to begin again.

Haven't decided on FDs for next week yet....not tomorrow as we have very little healthy stuff in the house.

I won't weigh myself till after my FDs ...would be too disheartening otherwise.

OohMrDarcy · 12/08/2024 08:31

morning all

Weigh in today has me at 98.3kg - which almost cancels out last weeks loss and is a gain of 0.6kg
Bit annoyed at myself but also not really surprised with hotel dinner / breakfast and a big family reunion dinner out last week - we march onwards!

Next FD is planned for Tuesday

welcome @PersisFord

and welcome back from your hols @MonkeyTennis34

harriethoyle · 12/08/2024 10:57

Welcome @PersisFord !

Don't get disheartened @Katypp make sure you are tracking religiously on FD and maybe try IF on NFD? (which in practice means skipping breakfast! But always superspeeds my loss...)

I am FD today, mini tomorrow, FD Wednesday. Cous cous for lunch and a fishcake for tea today. I was going to FD tomorrow but I am WFH and I find it soooo hard. On the plus side means I can have soup for lunch though which makes me feel virtuous. I have an extremely robust weekend coming up so this is definite damage limitation. The end of the building work may be in sight in a couple of weeks too so I will get my scales back. Slightly terrified about that...!
